Thanks for this really objective review, Ramon! Always, really helpful to hear feedback from a chemist and an avid sunscreen lover. I don't think an American sunscreen can compare to non-American sunscreens but yes, with the limited pool of UV filters we have access to in the states, I think our formulators did a stellar job at creating this texture! And as you mentioned, some other spf formulas have been in the works x
Krave’s Beet the Sun sunscreen was my first introduction to UV filters that aren’t approved in the US. I have brown skin, oily eyelids, and am sensitive to fragrance. So US mineral and chemical sunscreens mostly don’t work for me. But Beet the Sun had a formulation that was beautiful and perfect for my needs. I fell in love! I bought a few bottles before it was pulled from the shelves. Since then, I’ve fallen been using Skin Aqua Super Moisturizer Gel. This new formulation uses filters similar to Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen which is $38 for 50ml at Sephora. So I hope that crowd will consider Krave’s (woman owned, earth friendly small business) reformulated Beet the Sun, at $20 for 50ml, instead.
Thanks for the honest review. For me it is a letdown that they made it for the USA Market. Not going to bother for an expensive SPF when there are Asian and EU SPF that are cheaper with MUCH better protection.
@@taintedlife2618 It's absolutely so North America to think smaller brands can push out the same prices of giant skincare companies. It costs smaller companies more to produce as their MOQ is much smaller than say ELF.
Why would someone pay $20 for this (old generation UV filters, SPF40 P+++), when you can buy many other Korean sunscreens for $11-$15 with new generation filters, probably better texture and better protection (SPF50+ PA++++). I simply don't understand this launch.
The only reason I can think of is that they’re looking to enter a US retail store. But then, I’d think they’d get approved water resistance since most US sunscreens have water resistance. They should have aimed to compete with Supergoop, which has a Trader Joe’s dupe that works better for some.
I just feel like given the ease of ordering Asian spfs from overseas and their elegance and protection (spf50, 4 pluses).... Given so many superior options at lower prices, why would anyone choose this?
This was my absolutely favorite sunscreen. It was Brown Girl friendly, gave me a beautiful glow, and did not burn my eyes. As soon as I saw on FB the reformulated version was available, I immediately purchased it.
Ahh I just purchased before this video! I just noticed the email hehe. So excited, I love trying sunscreen because even if my face doesn’t like it, I can use it on my body.
This product has everything I hate about sunscreens! 😂 1. Expensive 2. Old filters 3. SPF below 50+ and PA below 4+ 4. No water and sweat resistance 5. Eye stinging
@@jam6web84 because it’s a 3/4 on your criteria haha seriously tho that is my holy grail sunscreen! Check out some reviews and you might be swayed haha but yeah wish they had PA4+. What is your holy grail spf??
Yeah. Old Filters, approved by the out of date FDA. And I do need a water and sweat resistant SPF. My LRP UVMUNE is STILL THERE, after I have hoofed it outside wearing a 20lb. vest for 6+ hilly miles, and perspired all over my Peloton Tread. Check my UV Mirror, still in place, under the beads of sweat. I do take a little care around my eyes. I need to work my oil cleanser to really get it off.
I love eating beets and I never got the chance to try the original in the tiny bottle. This relaunch spf looks promising. I have to get my hands on it for my dry skin.🥰
Didn't the brand claim that the old formula did not test too far off the spf50? I'm not sure why they wouldn't just adjust the claims on the package and leave the formula the people loved if the spf was still above 30.
I've been wondering the same thing. My best guess is they listened to the group of customers saying they wanted US FDA approval. I did see people asking for that in the comments. However, I thought that was why they were developing a mineral sunscreen -- to get approval as a sunscreen in the US market.
@@karatalksaboutstuff7333 I mean, they could have just still sold it in the US without sunscreen claims. I think they have a big enough of a dedicated fanbase to be able to do that.
@@morgianasartre6709 isn’t that what Lia did with the first beet the Sun, they did not claim it was a sunscreen so as to be able to sell it here. Why the change now?
What a bummer. The OG had Tinosorb S. I would have tried this if Liah had not gone the U.S. route. Almost NOTHING can get me to use it over the LRP Invisible UV MUNE 400. Even though the Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate it contains makes me yellow. I know that DHHB is protecting my face and neck from all those nasty super long UVA rays.
@@shannontimmons5594 I'm in the U.S. as well. Try eBay. Last place I bought was Care to Beauty, but since my purchase the price has risen sharply. My normal French Pharmacy has not sent me a back in stock email now for a long time. I do wonder if LRP has gone back to the drawing board to remove the yellow stain it leaves on fair skin.
@@SusanSlattery thanks! I also got mine from care to beauty but I always worry I’m getting counterfeit product. I reached out to la roche posay and they wouldn’t confirm that care to beauty was an authorized reseller and suggested I use LookFantastic but they don’t ship to my US address.
Not you name-dropping my favorite sunscreen as an example of "greasy" 🤣 That's okay though, I tried BGS SPF 30 because of you! You said it was good but too oily for your skin so my dry af skin said GIVE IT
Meh. I don’t do +++ sunscreens. I need FOUR pluses! Hard to turn back to run of the mill US filters after you’re accustomed to Asian and Euro sunscreens. Avobenzone burns my eyes. Like others, I’m kinda bummed about this launch.
I don't get why this sunscreen exists. If there's nothing revolutionary about it, then why did Liah, of all people, decide to have her company produce it? I thought we weren't making skincare that isn't meaningfully different? I am confused and disappointed by this launch.
Right? They are the company holding brands accountable for releasing too many products (which I appreciate) yet also they, release a below average sunscreen that offers nothing more than most US brands.
i’m kind of looking at this launch as the closest an american sunscreen can get to a korean sunscreen. i just don’t think it’s possible to have the american filters and get a totally lightweight invisible finish. but i’m sure it will be a lot more cosmetically elegant that most american sunscreens
@@debbyd5729 yeah i don’t buy supergoop because of the price. and i’m really not mad at $20 from a small brand i was honestly expecting it to be a lot more
@ I'm looking forward to an invisible, mineral, lightweight sunscreen loaded with peptides, gentle antioxidants and skin soothing ingredients with an SPF 50 rating personally.
Excited for the relaunch but also curious how skin1004 can make such a light sunscreen with spf50+ pa++++ while this krave one is heavier, less protecting, and stingy. Wish krave would have kept with the Korean filter route.
@Trinity M understood but previously krave had two different named sunscreens (the one in the US was the beet shield). Krave could have taken that route again with unapproved us filters but they did not. There is no excuse to have a "barrier focused" brand selling irritating eye/skin sunscreens in today's market.
I absolutely love this sunscreen! Its the only US chemical one i've tried that doesn't sting my eyes, and the formulation is sooo nice for my dry and sensitive skin. The price is meh, but I've been through so many cheaper k-beauty sunscreens and they either irritate my skin or are too greasy (purito, isntree, BoJ, Skin1004, etc). I love japanese ones but don't want to wear them daily because of the alcohol. I can use this daily (& without moisturizer during the summer) and it's just so good!
I’m so sad they went with US filters this time 😭 I’m allergic to octocrylene so I can’t try this reformulation. Hopefully their future formulations are different
I never tried the old formula because I have sensitive skin. Now that this formula is free of silicones and alcohol (and still free of fragrance) I might give it a try. It's still cheaper than my go to supergoop. Thanks for the review!
Not just eyes for me. I recently tried a US "chemical" sunscreen that was marketed to sensitive skin. I hadn't tried one in years so I thought I'd give it another shot. My cheeks were RED and stinging within 2 hours. Thankfully I tested it at home (learned that lesson the hard way), so I was able to wash it off and put on some LRP cicaplast right away. There's a possibility the reaction wasn't caused by the UV filters, but they're certainly the most likely culprit. I like Krave, but it's not worth the risk of trying this sunscreen when I've already got mineral and Asian ones that work just fine for me.
@@seansean681 try the water sun gel from isntree!! Best Korean spf I have tried! Glowly, lightweight and doesn’t sting eyes or cause acne! I want to try this krave one but it deadass has no Korean uv filters which suck
I absolutely love krave beauty make up remover. Definitely one of my favorites. I was using the krave beauty original spf til the very day it got discontinued. Once I started developing post acne scaring I’ve switched to mineral spf and haven’t went back to chemical sunscreens. I really can not wait til krave beauty launch there mineral sunscreen. I’m hoping the decent zinc percentage and that it does not leave a noticeable white cast. Until then I’ll be patiently waiting.
My favorite sunscreen of all times is the Correct & Protect Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 45 | PA++++. It’s a serum consistency sunscreen. It’s non-tinted but it doesn’t leave a publicly noticeable white cast. It has a zinc 17.0% which is good for me. The only down fall is that is 69US$. However there are sites like skin elite where they have them for a lower price. I’m still in the process of trying mineral sunscreen. The tatcha mineral sunscreen 🧴 is another one I like. And Murad also has a tinted one and it has the same amount of zinc as the tatcha one. I’ve also tried the mineral sunscreen by olay which has 17.5% zinc and a spf of 30. It also doesn’t leave a crazy white cast after it settles in. My sunscreen to try is the babo botanicals daily sheer tinted mineral sunscreen. It’s fairly priced and it has a zinc of 20% and spf of 50. Only thing it’s not water resistant. I have an entire Bucklet to try. But overall the Murad spf 45 correct and protect is my go to hands down.
Gurl I know your cool with Liah but this looks Hella greasy!!! Unless your using alot of fenty matte powder this looks like a hard pass. And BTW your sun stick is 💣 I'll stick to that
@@bleuzag4559 it looks small. And only spf40 ? For a daily use it would be good and its 25dollars. I can buy eu or asian sunscreens for cheaper price and better filters
I have yet to find a Kbeauty alternative sunscreen as amazing as Isntree Sun Gel. When they repackaged I nearly had a heart attack worrying they would secretly reformulate as all brands swear they dknt but do all too often to cut costs and ruin a perfect formula that many depend on lol. Luckily it remains the same. I have tried hundreds of spfs in my life and would love something zinc based to work but they all leave my face with such a heavy film always causing congestion and not easy washing off end of day even though I enjoy the mattifying effects of Zinc having only prone skin. I have similar issues in the alternate end of light milky lotion formulas from euro or kbeauty brands claiming to be just that but instead being way to wet and dewy so ultimately causing a greasy sheen by end of day as well as instant breakouts for me. All euro are filled with alcohols and silicones galore my skin hates so I really depend on k beauty brands but cant stsnd the grease factor everyone claims is glow! I enjoy healthy skin much as the next person and have natural glow so the overly moist feeling even being light on application kills it for me. Have wanted so many other raved brands to work like Krave, Besuty of Joseon and etc I adore but Isntree is only I can get away with which is summer gives me a little much moisture even using it alone as my moisturizer and sunscreen but rest of yese flawless for me and no breakouts! 😅
I won't be trying this one. I have very sensitive eyes and have had to pull over because I couldn't see when the Elta MD sunscreen traveled into my eyes while driving. After that I gave up on US chemical sunscreens.
@ well in my mind krave has always been a more innovative and Korean inspired brand the main thing I’m mad about it’s that they decided to use American approved filters so that it could be sold as sunscreen in the us I would’ve preferred if they went the same route as the original beet the sun and use more innovative filters at the expense of not being categorised as sunscreen in us but I understand their choice from a marketing prospective
Thank you as always for your amazing thorough reviews Ramón 💜 I am looking for some advice and considering how knowledgable you are, I thought I could ask you and your community, I hope that’s okay. I struggle to find a sunscreen I really want to wear. I have tried probably 10 or 15 chemical sunscreens, and despite having no irritation at all when applying them and really enjoying the formula, they always break me out, whether they are European or Korean. So far, the only few sunscreens I have found that do not break me out are mineral sunscreens, but they DO irritate my skin upon application (as in rubbing them in stings a bit), which is super weird (but you did mention that ZO can be irritating). They’re also obviously a lot less elegant and pleasant to wear, especially as someone with dry dehydrated skin that could avoid mattifying ingredients. Also, mineral sunscreens and makeup are just not great. Should I give up on chemical sunscreens and just focus on looking for mineral? Do you have any recommendations based off my experience, chemical or mineral? Thank you for reading me xo
Are you sure it’s the filters in the non-US sunscreens that break you out? Or maybe it’s a common non-filter ingredient like coconut oil or something else? If ZO irritates you, you can also look for just titanium dioxide.
@@debbyd5729 i am not sure; it just seems that every single chemical sunscreen breaks me out. I was wondering if it was maybe a particular ingredient used commonly in association with chemical UV filters that could be the cause. Thank you for your input. I think TD is not as protective, is it?
I only love Korean sunscreen cause all of them have those uv filters that aren’t available here. But liahs new formulation has nothing but American filters :/
This has to be the most disappointing sunscreen launch. The use of US filters for the price is too much. You can get similar US sunscreens in 3oz bottles for less.
How do people just rub sunscreen over their eyes?! lol. I ask because I have always tried to keep my eyes closed as tight as possible, no matter what, sunscreen and/or any other product immediately runs into my eyes. Organic/Inorganic filters, it doesn't matter. I have super duper long eyelashes I've been told, not sure if that causes it. All US filters leave my face as a grease ball at the end of the day with the exception of Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide (They act as oil absorbers in my experience). I really hope this doesn't do that to me.
I don’t understand why people in this comments section are so obsessed with a sunscreen needing to be out of the ordinary. A huge point this brand makes is simplicity in skincare. It’s not supposed to be extraordinary because it’s not for the luxe people that want that. /gen
I think there’s a misunderstanding, as it’s not about needing extraordinary product. It’s about how they sold sunscreen branded as an antioxidant lotion in order to use/sell the newer UV filters in the US. This gave Americans the opportunity to try these arguably better UV filters without needing to import from another country. The same company now chose to take two steps back by not building onto what made the first iteration great. Not a bad product by no means, just not what the OG Beet Shield fans wanted.
@@isaiaht5870 In that case, I can understand why it seems like this launch would be a let down if we’re comparing to the original. I just think some people might be overreacting a little. It’s fine if people aren’t interested in the new one, but I wouldn’t say this launch was completely pointless.
