legally speaking someone can agree to have their skin tanned, I've seen it done with tatoos. So yea if you have a friend or relative that signs off on you tanning some of their skin I don't think it would be that crazy to have WW do it. It would be weird as hell tho.

I mean that famous Bodies art installation has actual people.. People donate their bodies for science all the time. I wouldn't see a legal issue is people signed a contract to use their skin for "art" like dice trays after their die.

So while this is a joke, I have looked into it in the past. There was an interesting show on TV where a guy wanted to leave his family a unique piece of art. He wanted his skin displayed. The family made arrangements in America as they were from Canada, don't know if they could not get it done up there. It took special procedures, which require licenses, and took over 3 months costing roughly $71,000 to do. I just picture Frank going "no" before doing that head shake.

@labtec514 2 года назад
I mean logically and probably ethically you'd just dye a leather with the right base tone and work up from there.
@delboytheman
@delboytheman 2 года назад
I worked in a rubber factory for 6 years on and off, and used a clicker constantly throughout my time there. Using that back section to pull leather through is fine, but you will lose a lot of material if your workers don't think about what they are doing because of the irregular shape of the cutters and the leather. Just where and how to position the cutter can lose a lot of material very quickly if they don't try to maximise what they can on the fly. Also loading and pulling the leather through can be annoyingly tedious for large orders. You'll want bench space one side or the other of the clicker so the worker can set up to click 200 items in one long stretch without having to stop the motion of clicking (its all about a rhythm on large orders). The job isn't hard but its mind numbing and you can get complacent very quickly. We typically would hand cut sections down to a more manageable size and keep containers for scrap that can be reused for smaller cutters/forms. Focus on one item at a time because resetting machine and your work space breaks your flow and loses time.
@reallunacy
@reallunacy 2 года назад
With leather you have the added issue that there will be imperfections such as mosquito bites, scars, or brands so they'll really want to pay attention to the layouts in order to not waste the material.
@NovaHorizon

9:47 A BIG TONY APPEARS (also leather colour preference depends on the wood colour)
@LiquidBeaver
@LiquidBeaver 2 года назад
Just wanted to point out that after the conversation at 11:57 what they ended up using was a rubber mallet and not a dead blow hammer, which is why the mallet head rebounded like crazy and the wood bounced all over the place, and also why not much force actually made it into the die. An actual dead blow hammer would have probably done a great job with the exact same setup.
@AlainPilon
@AlainPilon 2 года назад
The dead blow mallet does not hit harder, it just doesnt bounce. The force of the impact is mass x velocity. Given that both tool weight the same, the result would be the same, but less dangerous with the dead blow.
@LiquidBeaver
@LiquidBeaver 2 года назад
@@AlainPilon It is very plain to see that much of the force that the rubber mallet was able to create was just lost to the rebound and the bouncing wood, rather than be transmitted through it into the die like a dead blow hammer is literally created to do. Even if they did generate the exact same force but one successfully imparts more of it into the intended target and the other doesn't, the result is not the same, and one tool is better for the job than the other. This was not the "gotcha" you hoped it would be.
@AlainPilon
@AlainPilon 2 года назад
@@LiquidBeaver That is not how physics works. The energy cannot be "lost to the rebound", if both objects have the same mass and travel at the same speed, they both transfer the same amount of energy to the die. The rebound is the same energy being transmitted back in the opposite direction to the wood/mallet (minus a certain amount). In the case of the dead blow, the design of it absorb this rebound energy and cancels it to a certain degree because not all the energy is transmitted to the object at the same time, some of it (the weight in the head) lags behind. Your belief that the deadblow hits stronger is most likely because they tend to be _much_ heavier than hammer/rubber mallets. And there is no doubt that for this task, a deadblow would be better, for safety reasons; but both would cut the same.
@cthalupa6879
@cthalupa6879 2 года назад
A rubber mallet will deform some and absorb some of the energy, so Kory is correct to a certain extent - but it's negligible for the purpose of cutting leather. It's the same reason we have crumple zones, etc., instead of just making cars very stiff. Energy is lost to the deformation. What doesn't matter is the rebound. A dead blow hammer is receiving more or less the same amount of energy reflected back, but it's transferred to the lead shot or sand inside of it - dead blow hammers don't rebound back at you because of what's inside them, not because they're made of something besides rubber. A metal hammer isn't made out of rubber, but will still bounce right back at you.
@AlainPilon
@AlainPilon 2 года назад
@@cthalupa6879 I dont think anyone said the mallet would bounce because it is made out of rubber. Actually, deadblow are made out of rubber too (mine is at least!). That is why I didnt talk about the lost of energy due to the mallet material, they are both about the same. But not this get me thinking: how much energy would be required to have a deadblow bounce back?

@ninjasownpirates
@ninjasownpirates 2 года назад
But that's counter to its actual use here. Strength isn't an issue since the wood is what actually bears any force (also the force of a dice dropping is negligible). The leather is only meant to dampen the sound and bouncing of the dice which is all about thickness here.

I personally had used a clicking machine alot in a leathergoods manufacturer. As others have said you have to care about how to maximise amount of material. Also one thing to note is that the cutting board and the knives are consumables. Cutting boards wear down as do the knives Noting knives wear down in two ways, the knives become dull and knives also break, generally at the soldering. Not to mention that mistakes do happen so if there is a tool being used, like something to push the leather back out of the knife (like a screwdriver) then sometimes you might click on top, breaking the knife. Regards to pulling through, its exactly what's its for. You just have to ensure that the material doesn't touch the hydraulic cylinder, with the result being grease over your leather.

I leatherwork as a hobby. They make cutting dies just like that for hammering. The practice is way older than clicker tech. The problem here was you were losing probably half the energy or more by the beam jumping in the air. The dies I've seen had posts to target with the hammer. For that size, I'd expect 3, but I could see it being made with 2 strike posts. If you know what you are doing, that would be 3 quick strikes and done. And yes, they can be made to cut multiples, and/or thick leathers.

There is a type of leather cutting knife referred to as a clicker knife, because the process of cutting leather with one takes multiple passes and the knife makes a clicking sound on the worksurface when it comes off the leather at the end of a pass. Apparently shoemaking workshops in the old days were really loud because of the knives (I think the workers may even have been nicknamed clickers, but I'm not sure). I wouldn't be surprised if it's to do with that.
