New Nurse Journey: What UNIT I'm working in | this is harder than i could've ever imagined 

Nursing is DEFINITELY not all its cracked up to be on social media! Behind those cute pictures in scrubs are 12 hours of blood, sweat, and tears, literally! I am also a GN training in an ICU and I can tell you everything you said in this video I can relate to 100%. Just keep taking it day by day, PRAY, and try to stay positive. Tell yourself that you are doing the best you can right now and will eventually get to a point where you have a routine and become more independent and comfortable in decisions regarding patient care. WE GOT THIS!

New grad in the ICU here 🙋🏼‍♀️ I understand how you feel completely! I went all throughout nursing school wanting to be a peds nurse and I somehow ended up in the ICU! God will bring you to where you need to be! Good luck girl!! All of us baby nurses gotta stick together!!

Don’t be afraid to share your experience, your TRUE/RAW experience. Many people feel lost and surprised on their first nursing job. And it’s nice to find similar people who are going the same things you are going through. Like you said, social media pictures nursing as ‘cute/glamorous.’ But it’s not! Especially not inpatient 😆 you will do great! Have lots of self care days to push through 💕

Also a new grad here. Just know that God is with us throughout this process. He has placed us in our units for a purpose. Stay strong, focused and just remember that nothing is impossible with God by our side 😊

I graduated nursing school 30 years ago. I don’t think you ever feel like you are in control. But you do get more confidence in handling what comes up. My daughter is entering her last semester of nursing school. I really dread for her entering the post nursing school/starting a new job period. It is so hard.......I remember crying so many days after work. Nursing really is a great opportunity and there are so many options out there. Best wishes to you. Hang in there.

I feel you! I started as a OB clinic RN, I thought because of the good schedule it would be the perfect job for a mom! Nope… I absolutely hated it, I didn’t get my degree to just type on a computer all day plus I am still young an enjoy working at a fast pace. I at least want 5-10 years bedside experience then maybe go into something less demanding when I’m in my 40s/50s. Just like you mentioned I wanted to perfect my skills and do things like start IVs etc. so I went to a FT weekend position in oncology at the hospital and love the fact I can be a mom during the week, I make weekend pay and I’m learning so much!

Wow, it is so awesome that you are trusting God even though you are feeling overwhelmed with responsibility! He is listening and He will perfect that which concerns you! Psalm 138:8.

I agree, nursing is not what social media puts it to be. It’s hard. I’ve been a nurse for 9 years and I can tell you it gets better with time. There’s so many opportunities in nursing though and that i love. Good luck!

What I took from this, "I want to learn..." that says enough about you. That's encouraging as well. That should be the goal of any profession.

Nursing is the greatest profession but it is extremely tough at times, as you’re finding. Be patient with yourself, understand you’re going to make mistakes (big and small) and be open to learning for the entirety of your career. The life-long learning is one of the aspects I absolutely love. A piece of advice I was given when I started which really stuck with me “you’re only as good to your patients as you are an advocate for yourself.” If you find that 4 patients is becoming too overwhelming or that you’re only getting 1 break a day then you need to advocate for yourself for greater support, regular check ins or asking for a reduced patient load so you can really focus on those in your care. Then increase your workload and responsibilities when you feel confident and that way those patients in your care get your best. Best of luck, you’ll get there and I’m glad you found a position better suited for your goals. Nursing (done properly) takes up too much of your life (mentally, physically and emotionally) for it to be spent in a unit that’s not for you.

Thanks for this. I graduate this week, and my residency in L&D starts in August. Before August, I’ll be an “Extern” on med surg. I appreciate when new nurses keep it real about what it’s REALLY like. Hello from a fellow oncology nurse!! I never thought I’d love oncology but it was the first interview I had once I graduated nursing school and I’ve been an oncology nurse ever since (5 years) and it has been INCREDIBLE!! I love it so much. Its exhausting. But It’s such an honor that I get to take care of these cancer patients. Moving from 4 to 5 patients is a BIG change but ALWAYS ask for help! Having nursed for 14 years I can honestly say that taking your breaks is so important. You can sometimes feel like you are drowning in the amount of work that you have but taking even 15mins out clears your head so much and helps with your concentration. We need to care for ourselves before we can care for others and that includes ensuring we are hydrated and nourished. Think how we would get on at patients for not eating for so long x

I’m a new grad on a medical/observation unit and I literally JUST got off orientation and had 6 patients the other night!! I was shocked I was even able to pass all meds in 2 hours! Charting took FOREVER and even just 2 months ago I was taking 3 patients with tons of preceptor support and couldn’t imagine taking on double but wow being a new grad is such a trip because you’re literally trying to drink water from a fire hydrant it’s insane. Us new grads have to stick together and talk about our struggles to know we’re not alone!!!

I have been watching your vids for a while and I feel like you’ve matured a lot! I’m so happy for you! I finished my LPN two days ago and I will be working where I have worked as a cna for a while in LTC, but when I get my RN a year from two days ago, I want to move to med/surg at my local hospital where we do our clinicals. There is a progressive care unit med/surg floor that I am really interested in where my aunt works so I’m hoping I can get in there! Then my goal is to eventually master my skills and get to the ICU! I remember when I worked in pulmonary unit when I first became a cna, I always felt like I wasn’t good enough to be on my own. But that fear pushes you to learn and grow and you become independent.

Welcome to oncology nursing! Onc is hard for all of the obvious reasons and the little annoyances you discover working in a hospital. It takes a passionate, compassionate, and dedicated person to be able to handle the demands of oncology. I went to nursing school specifically to be a Peds onc nurse and couldn't be happier. My little nuggets and their families are everything! I hope you end up loving it as much as I do! You really become a part of these patients journey and get to know them. Some days you are impossibly hard but most I go home with the biggest smile and a happy heart knowing I could make a difference for someone

I completely relate to how you feel! Nursing is definitely glamorized on social media. I'm glad I'm not the only one that has to mentally prepare before a shift. I would love to hear about some of the main skills you learned in the oncology unit!

I watch videos like this so I have a realistic idea of what I’m getting myself into. They say the first year of nursing is the hardest. My professors advised us to make sure we take breaks, no matter how short. I feel like nursing as a profession has much room for improvement especially in terms of nurse to patient ratios and supporting new nurses. Th transition from 1 to 4 patients in just one week is a good example of that. I’m still excited but I know it’s not gonna be easy!

Girl thx for being raw and truthful about this profession ! Not many do so on social media. I am a fellow catholic young woman in an ADN program but before was an lna. Speaking from the POV of an lna, it is so difficult to the point I treat people as things, more than actual humain beings. It is so sad because I was so focused thé to do things I had. My med-surg clinical was on a surgical oncology unit and I LOVED it!!! I learned so much and saw some many interesting procedures and diagnoses. I’m def interested in going back to onc after i graduate.

Hey there! Loved this video! When you were talking about wanting to learn all the different things about drains, foleys, etc. I kept thinking “oh she needs a surgical oncology floor!” I am a tech on my hospitals surgical oncology floor and I love it! It’s very difficult but so rewarding. When I get out of nursing school I want to stay on my floor. It takes special people to work oncology. Keep up the great work, and please talk to people! Do not keep your emotions in, I learned that the hard way 😅😅😅

Girl you got this!! I am a PT but watch your channel as my daughter is in her pre-reqs for nursing school now. I have been in my field for more than 20 years and still have moments of pre-shift anxiety and occasional post-shift in-the-car tears. It means you care about the quality of care you are providing and feel empathy for patients and colleagues. And it will become easier... especially for those with your drive to learn! Take care!

As someone who's dealt with blood cancer myself, it feels like your whole life is plummeted into the trash can. I did a bone marrow transplant and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. Every level, physically, mentally, psychologically and emotionally. I talked to a counselor and got psychotherapy for the mental distress. However I'm doing so much better now than a few years ago. I spent so much time with oncology nurses and I love them all to death. I see how hard they work and how exhausted they look when they switch off to the night nurses. Thank you for being an oncology nurse because they are some of the most hard working compassionate people I've ever known.

I can understand your concern about an inpatient rehab unit. I was on an inpatient rehab unit half of the time for my med surg 1 clinical. It was rather on the slow side most of the time. Like you said, those patients are on their way home. The patients were in therapy for a good chunk of the day. As nursing students, we did get to accompany our patients to therapy, but of course you don't do that as an actual nurse on the unit. We did see some IVs/PICCs, wounds, and orthotics, but that was really about it. A unit like inpatient rehab isn't for everybody. I'm glad you were able to get onto a unit that better fits you though! Thank you for being real about your experience. I'm due to graduate in December, and although I have some particular units in mind, who knows where I'll actually end up first.

I work med surg oncology and love it ❤️ I worked tele for 2 years and also loved the experience from that but oncology has been a great place to learn and usually the pts/families are very thankful ☺️

I completely understand I was contemplating working in the hospital and then God lead me into Hospice Case Management and it is a different going to work. I think it changes your perspective on life itself. I’m thankful even in the trying times. And I too have been mentally drained sometimes we think we are going thru it alone Thank you for your transparency and keep pushing.

And that the first few years of working as a nurse is when you learn how to really be a nurse. And that that time is really rough. I’ve been an RN for 5 years (mostly in PCU and Cardiology) but I just started in a Level 3 NICU, and I feel like a brand new nurse. My adult experience is completely irrelevant to me now. I’m going into my second week and I also feel completely overwhelmed. I know it gets better in time and it’s supposed to feel uncomfortable in the beginning but I’m like omg can I just fast forward to where I know stuff! Lol so I’m right there with you 😳🥴😭

Nursing is an art. Unless you worked in it or currently working in it, you understand how much hard work it is. It is mentally and physically exhausting and you get to experience moments that reminds you why you became a nurse in the first place. Keep pushing and know that you will have a lot of good days more than bad! Enjoy the journey and good luck! :)

My first nursing job was in an acute inpatient rehab and I learned so much there. Whether it be transfers or anything of the such.. ultimately I just learned how to be so damn adaptable since so much shit can happen in there unexpectedly. But I left because I did end up craving more. It does leave you stagnant after you learn everything you can about inpatient rehab and the injuries you see.

Oncology is truly a special field ❤️ I did my senior preceptorship on a medsurg oncology floor and fell in love. When I moved home there were no inpatient oncology floors, so I went straight into outpatient oncology. Still do a LOT of nursing skills being outpatient, constant ports, PICCs, IV’s and assessments. After ~6 months you will start to feel more competent but some days will always be hard regardless.

Missed watching your videos! You do seems like a hard worker and I believe you can handle it. God doesn’t give us more than we can handle and if he has placed you in this unit it’s for a reason. There’s a purpose you need to fulfill before you move on to what’s next for you 🤍

I agree that nursing is not all that happy and the media has the tendency of making it glamorous and effortless but its not. I also 100% agree with the fact that working with oncology patients is very mentally, physically, and emotionally draining and that is something school can't prepare you for since these patients are incredibly vulnerable and what you see is only a little bit of what they are actually going through. I started out in radiation therapy (later switched into public health) and can relate to that. However, to work in oncology requires a very special person and is indeed very rewarding. It is a lot of work and something I've learned throughout my medical journey is that life sometimes takes us down a different road and to not be alarmed if things don't go as planned since we will all end up where we need to be in the end. Thank you for sharing your story!

You can still pick up decline on in-patient rehab. As a new nurse- every single job provides you with a learning opportunity. Every nurse is stretched very thin. Real life nursing is night and day compared to being a student nurse. This is real life nursing, it’s not glamorous!

Don't worry I felt so worthless and dumb on my 1st nursing job out of school despite working as a CNA in hospitals for several years. I left my 1st hospital job after 6 months because I was so unhappy. I wish I had stuck it out longer but I still had a successful nursing career since. 5 years later now I'm a confident experienced nurse.
