old hickory 5.5 inch hunting knife modifications
Here are my modification to the new old hickory 5.5 inch hunting knife from ontario knife company OKC. Just released June 18, It had some issues out of the box. So these modifications (mods) were needed to field test it. Mods included a new bevel, sharp spine, wood burn handle, logo carving and a textured vinegar patina.

soak the entire knife in vinegar over night scrubbing it with paper towel. perfect paina and the wood soaks up some of the black making it dark looks great

Im doing a canadian belt knife style. Going with burlap micarta and chicago screws instead of rivets. Definitely doing 90* at spine base as well. I love a knife thats all belly though. If it finishes well i will be doing a smaller one thats more steak knife size for daily carry/ bird n trout. I love my cjrb ria blade shape but blood/ goo and folders dont mix, especially all this new crap with ball bearings.

wow that blade was in rough shape. Either you got bad luck or their standards went down. I got an old hickory butcher knife 10 years ago that was crazy sharp out of the box. Had a fine edge on it.

I have a similor knife in my possession for the last 50 years. That knife does not rust and has about the same handle and form of blade. In Europe this is considered to be a seaman’s knife, not a hunting knife. When I bought it, it cost around 40 tot 45 Dutch Guilders, which would be about 20 Euro at the present moment. Ofcourse this knife will cost you about 45 Euro now, but the good thing is, it’s still for sale and comes with a good leather sheath. I would rather have that knife than the knife out of the film, because this one still looks like it just came out of the store. No rust, no nothing, just the sheath is a little bit worn out. The sheath, by the way, is made in Norwegian style and fits like a glove.

Hello sir, I have a genuine question for you. Do you have OCD? I have it pretty bad, i keep repeating the same gestures over and over. And I got some facial ticks along with checking my pockets over and over like every 5-15 mins I’ll do it like 6-12 times in a row something up to 30. It’s been a real burden if you don’t mind opening up and sharing how your ocd effects you and how your overcoming it. Thanks in advance

I’m sorry to hear of your struggles. My OCD is more like....I fix something, but then I have to go back and make sure it is fixed. So then I fix it “better” if that is really possible. Then I have to go back and check it again and make it better....and so on and so on. When I find I get bad, I try to put it to rest some how. One way I do that is I use lists. So... let take making sure the door is locked. I’ll make a list of what needs done that day. On that list will be lock the door. When I lock it or anything else on the list, I check it off...getting to check it off helps me. As a matter of fact, sometimes I make the list after I have done it, but as long as I get to cross it out or check it off. It gives me a sense of calm. It’s like...by writing it down, I get it out of my head. And by crossing it off-I get closure on that particular thing. I have lists everywhere. On my phone, in notebooks, on pieces of scrap paper, posted it notes, etc. But it seems to allow me to deal with it. I don’t have ticks, but I do have to clear my throat a lot. Almost to the point it gets sore sometimes. Also, I try to dwell on this verse: psalm 46:10 Be STILL and know I am God... trying to quiet my mind seems to help. I feel for you, my prayer for you is that you find some peace and STILLNESS. Blessings, the ocd Hunter

Number one you don't put olive oil on a wooden knife handle, you use boiled linseed oil. Another thing if you dont put a new handle on the old hickory it is useless as a bushcraft knife, you would no this if you actually practiced bushcraft, it want be belong before the handle will become loose it has no epoxy or anything to hold the handle on. The knife is good if you really modify it instead of making it look pretty.
