@@wildjiggaboo1 Pikmin has 2 sequels and a spin-off. F-Zero had like 5 sequels an arcade game and a whole anime.

And then you have to take into account that, compared to the first game, a Pikmin fanbase already existed for Pikmin 3 so 1 million sales still equals to weak sales for Nintendo.

1 million sales may imply weak sales by Pikmin 3 but as the OP stated this is the Wii U we are talking about, one of Nintendos biggest console flops... considering not every major Pikmin fan even owned that console its surprising it even sold 1 mil tbh.

Tbf, if you had asked me how Miyamoto came up with Pikmin, i would have guessed exactly that.

I only heard of the carrot story, which wasn't mentioned in this video.

It see it brought up all the time. Every single article/video about Miyamoto mentions how he gets ideas for games from his hobbies. The two most common examples are that Zelda was inspired by him exploring caves and forests in the countryside as a child and Pikmin was inspired by his passion for gardening (not really according to this video).

Then you're dad never worked at Nintendo like the rest of us.

I really hope this is the end of the Pikmin drought. Nintendo is going all-in on the marketing for this game, in some ways even more than they were for Tears of the Kingdom. I think they have extremely high hopes for Pikmin 4, and if this does do well and lives up to their expectations, we might just be looking at Pikmin becoming a mainline series with consistent releases.

Pikmin 3 was very dark

I figured their descriptions of it being a god-game where you manage a few characters in an adventure sounded more like Black and White than Simcity!

Pikmin is one of those Nintendo IPs that feels both obscure and well known all at once. On one hand Pikmin 1 and 2 sold decently enough on the Gamecube that people certainly know about the franchise, but as shown in the video they didn't sell high enough that they were prioritized like the mega sellers such as Mario or Zelda (heck even Metroid got more games in the time between Pikmin 2 and 3, and that's a Nintendo IP that's only popular in the West, in Japan the series tends to always do poorly). Pikmin 3 mainly came about because HD made Miyamoto go "oh Pikmin would be perfect for this." Maybe if the Switch Pro or the Switch 2 (whatever they call the Switch successor) supports 4K then we'll finally see Pikmin 4 as Miyamoto seems to treat Pikmin as the franchise to really show off a console's power.

Pikmin is not obscure, I'm sorry. Four games, promotional CG movies, playable Smash characters? It's no Mario or Zelda, but even "only 1 million sales" isn't even that bad.

A consistant 1M selling series is nowhere close to obscure compared to all the indie games that never even reach that number.

Heck, compared to other first entries in Nintendo series on the same consoles like Chibi Robo or Giftpia (the latter of which was never even localised).

To be fair, I think Miyamoto's "gameplay above all else" mentality is mainly regarding Mario.

Must have been a slight mistake in the script, but yep you're right. In the beginning of Pikmin 1 Olimar says "this planet's atmosphere is comprised of poisonous oxygen!" I dunno if it's ever stated what Olimar's people actually breath, but if oxygen is poison to people of his planet maybe they breath something like carbon monoxide, which is poisonous to humans.

Its probably the concentration of oxygen that's hazardous to them. Pikmin are supposed to be similar to their own race, to the point where the Pikmin could turn Olimar into one of their kind, so his people probably just have a lower tolerance for it due to their planet having either less of it or lower pressure. Much like how low pressure makes it harder to breath, high pressure would do the opposite and potentially cause hyperoxia. Pikmin's Earth may be more like it was during the carboniferous period, where levels were as high as 35%. That could explain the giant insects and amphibians.

@@ZombieBariothits not that earth is large. Its that Hocotate and Koppai are VERY SMALL in comparison. If I had to guess their planets would be the size of maybe bowling balls or basket balls orbiting around a small star. The creatures on earth are in scale to humans. Small to us but giants to them.

When you fail Pikmin the game ends and you have to start over, only an action replay would allow you to continue after the 30 day limit with no timer.

Yeah, Mario is a simple platformer at heart and Pikmin is a army plant picking simulator. Yet, Miyamoto expect that to be the next Mario.

Idk I mean...hearing Miyamotos thoughts and stuff just makes me feel even more that he's out of touch with modern gamers. I used to practically worship the guy and now I'm like when's he retiring.

Miyamoto's just being a bit full of himself. I remember when the original Pikmin 3 came out, he was trying to get people to like this franchise and care about it, but it just came off as really desperate and self-serving. "Someone please play my masterpiece! Hell, I'll even throw in a free demo, just please buy it, anyone!!!"
