Ever wonder what it takes to disassemble the New Process 435 standard transmission?
Look no further...
In this detailed video, Andy shows what it takes to teardown this 4-speed transmission. He shares textbook disassembly techniques, along with some pro tips and tricks, that he's acquired/developed in his 40+ yrs of rebuilding manual, and automatic, transmissions. He also share some other insights, and stories, along the way.
*******About the NP 435*******
The NP 435 has a positive reputation as a heavy-duty trans. Chrysler (Dodge), Ford, GM (Chevy), and International Harvester used it in their line-up (1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1+ ton vehicles). It was even used in some industrial applications.
It's a popular transmission for early Ford Broncos, rock crawling, and towing, due to the gearing of 1st gear (extremely low gear ratio)("granny" gear).

I recently acquired a Ford NP435 and am considering using it to replace the lame T14 in my 1974 CJ5. Novak sells an adapter to mate the 435 to my Dana 20 transfer case, but it adds 3.5" for a whopping 5.5" total added length. This makes the rear driveshaft angle almost too large. A shorter bell-housing helps, but I keep thinking there must be a way to fabricate a thinner adapter for this transmission/transfer combo. I understand the output shaft will have to be modified or a new one made. Anyway, I wanted to get a good look at the NP435 output shaft setup to see if the project even had a chance. This video, unlike others I watched, gave me a clear view of the situation. Almost as important, it gives concise and detailed instructions for disassembly, and the video is crystal clear. Thanks guys.

Hey guys - another great video! As far as the wear on the reverse gear is concerned. I was told as a kid learning how to drive a manual trans to ALWAYS shift the trans into 1st gear before shifting into reverse because it stopped the shaft from spinning and would reduce wear and tear, Any truth to that? And @ 22:38 hand jokes Andy? not cool you potty mouth !! Love you guys, keep 'em coming.

Andy: Yeah and I've been telling people for years when they back out of their driveway to remember and use the brakes instead of dropping it into drive and using that to stop the car. But do you think anybody listens to me on that advice. That was good advice. Because as we mentioned in the video, it's not synchronized in Reverse. Robert: 22:38 I've watched the video so many times, during the edit, that I completely forgot about that. Haha. Gonna have to make a reaction video... Thanks for dropping us a line, Mike!

A little while back took a trailer load of np435 transmissions, empty case's brand new, internals, of the transmission. To the scrap yard. Kept a few back. Still have some aluminum towers with the stick in them. Probably 50 + PTO that fit that transmission. They are a tuff transmission. Only really problem was dumb people operating the piece of equipment and taking 1st and reverse out. Front grinding the gears.

Everything on my truck has been overkill maintained. No issues with it whatsoever. No leaks shifting issues etc. Just want to replace the clutch because it's the original one to my knowledge or at least since I bought it from the state in 05' and moreso the rattling throw-out bearing. I would rebuild it if it showed signs of needing one but it's bulletproof and no issues. Not even seepage. As far as overkill maintenance I just mean I change the gear oil 75w90 every year.

Okay let’s start from the beginning I replaced the gasket for the shift cover and had no 4 gear and no reverse but after manny attempts I finally got it right !!!! If it goes into all gear that’s means I got the alignment right or wrong … only reason I ask 4 gear lacks in power when I accelerate or might be u joints or driveshaft place wrong ( which the transfer case driveshaft was ) maybe center carrier bearing installed wrong … Working on a 1985 Ford F-150 4x4 4.9 NP 435 tranny ….2 add to this the throw out bearing is spinning with the pressure plate .. once I step on the clutch pedal the noise goes away … One month of not working on the truck because I got sick and was on vacation I know the tranny had no abuse for rebuilt ..

I had a question I’m trying to separate t case adapter from the output shaft on a np435 I removed nut that holds a output gear that drive the t case. Having difficulty getting output gear off the output shaft splines. Maybe just stubborn due to age. ? Can’t wait to get this apart so I can check out inspection and overhaul vids.

@DeepPlane
@DeepPlane Год назад
Just started working on an NP435 myself, trying to find whatever information I can to help with replacing worn parts. (many of the bearings around the upper half, all the seals and gaskets, etc.) The links in the description helped with finding bearings, seals and gaskets. Now I just need to hopefully source a shift rail for the 1st and 2nd gear since it's showing wear and rattles around more than the 3-4 and reverse rail. I believe this is also contributing to it slipping out of 2nd gear, the symptom of which I've been tasked with attempting to resolve. Ideally I'd also try to get a new output shaft too since the splines on the output have definitely seen better days, but I can save that for a later time. edit: also need to find torque specifications for when I go to reassemble it all, and later once finalized, mount it to the vehicle it was installed in. The engine and transmission are not original to the vehicle I removed it from, but I believe the engine and transmission were installed together from another vehicle. a Ford of some sort with a 300 Cubic Inch straight 6 and NP435, which were transferred over to a New Holland 1046 Bale Wagon (originally had a Ford 240 Cubic Inch straight 6 with a Borg Warner T98 transmission). I suspect the donor vehicle might've been an F series, but cannot say for sure as it was the previous owner who made the swap. (neither engine was fuel injected, and both had a choke)
@DeepPlane
@DeepPlane Год назад
I found the torque spec and fluid capacity. Looked up a 1968 Ford F250 in the service information we have at the campus. 3.375 quarts of fluid. Unfortunately it didn't list a 300 L6 for the 250, but the torque for the transmission to the bell should be the same. And since I left the bell on the engine, we covered it to keep water out.

Hello sir, great video. Quick question. I'm replacing my clutch in my 85 f150 4wd. The throw-out bearing has been rattling for over a decade. I already purchased a new bearing retainer and seal. Would I just knock out the race from the old retainer and drive it back into the new and roll on? Thanks so much.

If it were me, seeing how you already purchased a new bearing retainer, I'd buy a new bearing/race, and press the new bearing race into the new bearing retainer.

@@SouthpawAutoworks my name is Michael Davis 68-year-old senior. I have a 2004 Tahoe two wheel drive. 4L60E. I took my truck to the shop to have room and seal replaced and oil pan gasket. Also replaced a bad radiator. When I got my truck back I no longer have 3rd and 4th. I took it back once or twice and to another shop and they were not able to tell me what's wrong with it. I was watching your video the other day and I was amazed how many hard parts are in the transmission So since I'm on fixed income I've been driving it around the neighborhood to go to the store in second gear. I've noticed that if I put it in third and push the toe button when it's first cold it's just complete all the way up except for fourth overdrive which I did not try. However after gets hot I can only drive it in second and it will go from first to second with no problem. The transmission makes no noise if you step on the accelerator it'll jump into third and when you let off the accelerated it'll jump back out. The transmission fluid is red. Could it be that there are bad o rings on the servo??
@SouthpawAutoworks
@SouthpawAutoworks Год назад
That's a real bummer. You wrote, "I took my truck to the shop to have room and seal replaced and oil pan gasket." Looks like auto-correct got involved. Room? Which seal? You mentioned a bad radiator. Can you share more details? External coolant leak? Internal leak, allowing coolant to enter the transmission? Did a transmission cooler line disconnect while you were driving? With the trans shifted into Manual gears, and with the Tow/Haul button selected, the PCM (computer) will increase oil pressure that is supplied to the clutches. I say "clutches"...but, in reality, the oil is being sent to pistons, and these pistons "smash" (or apply) the clutches (clutch packs). And those clutches manipulate the planetary gear set...which creates all of the forward gears, and of course, reverse. You can learn more by checking out this video: 4L60E Power Flow (1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Gear): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IfOqbTqKubE.html When time permits, please answer my questions. Thank you for clarifying on the radiator, etc. If I'm understanding everything correctly... 1). The trans was recently removed from your Tahoe, so a technician could gain access to the rear main seal. After the rear main seal was replaced, the trans was reinstalled. 2). While the trans was out of the vehicle, it was not touched...worked on, etc. 3). After trans was reinstalled, the Tahoe no longer had 3rd and 4th gear...with exception of using Tow/Haul button. 4). In addition to the rear main seal replacement, the Tahoe also had a new radiator installed, on the same visit. Am I understanding everything correctly?
