New Project + Interior Restoration!

In this video we take a closer look at the new Galant and cover in detail all the tricks I used to restore the old, dry leather involved on both Galants. Yes. Both. I have two of them. Please watch the Shootout video because it's not anything like my last 3.
A car is only as good as the driver's experience with it, so it's very important to me that this detail meets my standards. The build plan for both cars comes together right here, and I share with you my results and what direction each build will go. This video is extremely condensed. There's over 100 hours of work here, more than 30 in sewing, alone... and I've done my best to condense and explain it all so that it can be useful to anyone who encounters the same problems in their own restorations.

John's passing is so tragic, my heart goes out to his family and yourself Jafro. This project meant a lot to both of you and it's truly a shame that he won't be able to see it finished. I want to say that I'm so thankful to him for giving us all the opportunity to learn from this car, and I'm grateful that you're making sure that it's done right, it could not be in better hands. Thank you as well for dedicating this video to him, you're an incredible person Jafro, your videos and the dedication you've put into them has helped countless of us and even changed some of our lives for the better.

I'm binge watching Jafro tonight, what fun (yes, RU-vid failed to notify me again!) Looks like 148 lived a previous life in a Walmart car park fitted tightly between a Ute and and SUV and someone commuted between the two accross the top of 148? So many dings I lost count. I never thought I would be watching Jafro videos for tips on how to do leather upholstry repairs, and you did an awesome job even beside the fact that you did it for the first time. I could sene your passion for getting it right in every stitch! Sorry to hear about John passing, he would have been proud of the efforts you have made and the new found skills that you are bringing to these restorations. Well done, Jafro, and thanks.

I'm going thru all this with my 84 Fiero at least my floors are rust free. I got to the sound proofing laid down but unfortunately my carpet is to far sun faded to be saved. The after market carpet is not the old style loop stuff and does not have the salt and pepper style so I'm going to have to comprising and get a solid color. I all so have the 2 tone dark/light grey plastic. All the light grey abs plastic oxidized, I'm going to try this stuff called Retro bright on the pieces. SO replacing the carpet means the lower door cards wont match so I found some one to make vinyl replacement. There are replacement seat skins out there but I also have to dive in there and replace the headrest speakers. Its going to be tons of hours of my labor and still at least 2k to get every thing replaced and installed. I'm glad you did this video showing its possible, I hope it encourages more people to try repair and restoration of there interiors.

A trick to revive seat foam is to use a steamer. Its a great idea to line the bottom that touches the metal seat frame with some sort of thick fabric like denim material. And to have a absolutely new feeling seat cushion add a 1/8" layer of foam right over the whole thing.

I just bought a set of Recaro's for my Saturn Ion Redline. The previous owner of my car decided to sell the original Recaro's, and replace them with trash base model seats, before he sold it to the dealership. Anyway the drivers seat leather bolsters, and bottom all have blown out stitching and now I know where to start in those repairs. I'm going to re-enforce the seams also, I'm a bit larger than the intended demographic of this "sport compact Saturn". As always, I learn something I would have struggled with watching your videos. I will start on that seat over winter break from work.

I know! It's weird init!? This job lived inside my brain and on my shelves for ages and it's good to finally have all of it sorted x2 before the parts collection grew any larger. I cleared up a whole lot of space and now I look forward to passing on all the stuff I cleaned up that I didn't use. I even found a good home for my Evo seat! But now I get to return to the mechanical world for all of December! Beginning with 2 days of cleaning up bolts on a bench grinder of course. I love my hands, but they absolutely hate me.

90's leather is such a bonus. These days, a lot of interior leather is sealed - ostensibly to protect against stains, but it also means that leather conditioner just can't get in. I'm told you can break the sealant a bit with scotchbrite pads, but I've not had the guts to give that a try just yet. That said, the sealed leather doesn't seem to attract the mould either, so I guess it comes out even in the (power) wash.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 8 месяцев назад
I don't know how Toyota/Lexus leather even qualifies as leather? It's so delicate! That coating damages so easily with heat that you're better off just cleaning and refinishing it. That's why I left the warning. Like you said, the hide on this car is thick! But it does create more maintenance.

A lot of time has passed since the ozone treatment, and if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't. It accelerates the oxidation of everything including the plastic. Of course almost nothing plastic or leather was good to begin with, it had all already faded... but the seat I treated that you're referring to was this passenger-side replacement that I restored in this video. It got a lot softer than the driver's side over the years that followed. For years I was testing the results of different methods, and this was what I came up with. 1229's interior did clean up, but it actually rolled downhill faster after the ozone treatment. Hard foam got even harder, leather shrunk more, more fading. All the door lock pulls I had left broke off. I can't blame it for all of that but it certainly didn't help.

@jafromobile it might be a good idea to take one of those seatbelt buttons and send it to be 3D scanned that way the community can turn the scan into an STL file to make some 3D printed versions from red ABS or ASA. ASA in particular is very UV resistant, and both will put up with the high interior temperatures in the summer.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 7 месяцев назад
I think you can do that with your cell phone now? I have a 3D scanner at work, it's a PITA to use, slow, and requires post processing... but students are coming in with stuff they scanned with their phone. Remember some phones have LIDAR. Not mine. Just some.

Talking about biohazard.. Discard and replace any jute carpet underlayment. Soaking the seats then topically wiping the leather and calling it good...still masking a biohazard. Undoing hog clips and taking leather/upholstery cover off the foam only takes needlenose pliers and the will, inspect and treat the problem ever present underneath and from the backside. Headliner too!
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 8 месяцев назад
All correct! The jute's gone, but I'm saving it to use as templates for the replacement. That's actually the *only* thing inside the car that the mice were after or affected. The interior fabric I was referring to sending to the extractor is just the rear deck lid cover (if I don't clean that one myself), carpet, trunk liners, and the headliner. Rreplacing any of the seat padding or fabric requires completely de-stitching and re-stitching the entire seat, and that goes beyond where I'm willing to go because they really aren't all that bad... but the rusty seat frames might just still be bothering me enough to go back in there again. Why doesn't the factory paint ANY of that steel? It's not just Mitsubishi, nobody does it.

"Double top stitch" is called a french seam and is secured by both the first sticth and the under felt which is far easier done on a double needle walking foot machine, not two top stitches, it's also used to secure a raw edge on the fabric. A safer way instead of a heat gun on the leather, is to use a steamer after setting parts in the sun to soften slightly. Love the leather in the US spec VR4, wish I had a set in mine. Mines JDM spec so has the fabric glued to the seat foams, so not exactly easy to re-upholster even for someone like myself whom does automotive upholstery lol. Excellent job btw, never done much hand stitching unless it's a steering wheel or gearknob but props, use a wax coated thread in the future if you ever have to face the same unpleasantness😂..

Sorry to hear about John’s passing. No doubt you are making him proud with all the hard work you’re putting into this project. I’m sure he’s gonna continue to keep an eye on you as you continue to work on it. As for your stitching skills, you’re a product of a generation that was fortunate enough to have been thought those basic sewing skills. I too was lucky enough to have learned them at a young age. The basic skills are great for being able to expand into areas like saving upholstery. To fix things that others won’t or would be cost prohibitive to do so.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 7 месяцев назад
Thanks man! It's all those little skills that you didn't perfect added together that enable you to build that idea you imagined. Few of us can perfect all of the skills to the point of being professional. All of my other sewing ventures mentioned occurred in private schools and summer camp. I was judged for these events in my life by someone half my age recently. Those things were referred to me as "points of privilege". I grew up poor. My mom made my clothes. She is great at sewing. That's how I figured a sewing machine out or knew what a bobbin was. She worked a full time job, participated in medical experiments and even donated blood just to buy us groceries and keep a roof over our heads. For the years when I wasn't in public schools, my tuition was mostly paid by a charity that my mother begged for help from. The idea that these events are all somehow points of privilege come from people who are already too privileged and blind to even recognize the situation they are currently living in. My only privilege was having a parent that was willing to go to war just so I could have a chance. Summer camp is what your parents PAY FOR in order to be able to take at least a week's vacation from YOU. And they need it. They deserve it. Thanks mom!

Hmm I can’t see you using any type of soap if the seats or the carpets? The soap will break down a lot of bacteria and dissolve organic matter. Just blasting it will get some of but also push some of it deeper in cracks and provide nourishment for it. I usually use saddle soap on leather with a horse hair brush. Then just wipe it if and condition. I bought my stuff as you did from a horse shop! For carpets you want something that dissolves and then lifts the dirt. Cool project 😊

There's 2 parts. A cleaner and a conditioner. The cleaner was the first step of every piece of leather. ...and I noticed the cleaner seemed to penetrate and soften the leather much faster than the conditioner, but it just continues with this conditioner.
