Impressed with how they use the social drinking night as a teaching tool. These guys are young, fresh ourt of school most of them. It's important that they are taught how to drink safely and socialise professionally.

I did my time in the South African army recently. One thing I wish we were taught was how to be responsible. These recruits do seem like kids and the army is shaping them in all areas to be good people too.

I joined RNZN in 1992 and this training programme is by far a massive step in evolution ie train recruits to see gaps like in rugby - the advance training modules will fine tune their craft etc. The social event was particularly well thought of and often an aspect that is encouraged within the ward room or commissioned ranks. Well done NZDF.

Went through Basic 117 in 1971. The trg has changed considerably, cant recognize much as well. We had BE teats at the end of Basic 10 mile with full pack and rifle for the first 5. Only did 8 weeks as I had to get on a course in Trentham. NZ Army trg was very varied.

I'm glad to see they have decent kit these days. I had thin cotton trousers and shirt, nylon socks and a woollen jersey but no jacket... in the middle of a NZ winter. We also had SLR rifles that were 25 years old. On our last night we also had a drinks session which turned into a brawl and 15 guys ended up on charges. I wasn't there, having taken a drunken recruit back to the barracks half an hour earlier. The rest of the platoon were given extra duties but I refused to accept that BS and told them I'd see them in a court martial. They quietly let me pack up my gear and head off home. If you didn't stand up for yourself, they treated you like shit. Things have changed for the better.

Yes and no. You spend a lot of time with your rifle pointed at friendlies just because it has to be tucked under your arm so you can return fire immediately without bringing it up to your shoulder. In civilian life you would never hold a rifle that way.
@scottandchels6813
@scottandchels6813 3 года назад
@@neingagging7747 off the top of my head the only time your weapon is pointing at a friendly is during drill or combat training. You never point your weapon or muzzle swipe a fellow soldier period, unless you want an upper cut. At least it was that way when I was a grunt.
