Transcript:
In today's episode we'll be covering national federation of high school
two-person throw in mechanics. this video is part of our training series for new
officials on the basics of basketball officiating. here at a better official
our philosophy is to control the controllables.
What does that mean? in this instance it means that as a new official you can
become very qualified very quickly by learning and understanding the contents
of the officials manual also known as the mechanics manual. good mechanics are
essential to being a good official. This video will cover mechanics for throw-ins
we will only show the diagrams for a couple of seconds so use the pause
button as necessary to - to throw ins a general throw and provisions one always
indicate the color and direction of the throw - the ball is taken out of bounds
at the appropriate spot according to diagram 2 - 5
the spa should be designated by the administering official 3 the
administering official should always make eye contact with his or her partner
before handing or bouncing the ball to the thrower for the throw-in team should
make a player available to attempt to throw in no appreciable delay should be
allowed before placing the ball at the disposal of the thrower in beginning the
five-second counts 5 when administering throw ends on the sidelines a bounce is
recommended 6 when administering throw ends on the frontcourt and line the ball
shall be handed to the thrower 7 once the ball is handed or bounce to the
thrower move to observe the action unless the throw-in is following a
successful goal in which case no official need handle the ball prior to
the throwing 8 the administering officials shall sound the whistle to
indicate play is about to begin only following a charge timeout an
intermission or an unusual delay 9 the administering officials shall begin the
five-second count when the ball is at the throwers disposal the count is
silent invisible 10 if the clock has been stopped the administering official
should signal to start the clock when the released ball legally touches a
player who is in bed
all right let's take a look at a throw-in we're looking for general
throw-in provisions this will be an N line throw ins a back cord end line
throw-in so we'll also look at that
white throws the ball out of bounds official indicates color Direction
official indicates the spot for a designated spot throw-in the team makes
a player available immediately with no appreciable delay this is good this is
an end line throwing without defensive pressure so we're going to bounce the
ball to the thrower checks with his partner makes visual contact
nothing's we're not going to slow down bounce the ball to the thrower hand is
up to indicate to the timer when to start the clock when it's touched
inbounds legally begin a five-second count when the ball is at the disposal
and everything's good to go
be starting a quarter one the throw-in to start the second third and fourth
quarters shall be administered by the referee at the division line opposite
the table see diagram two - six
to indicate color and direction designate the throw-in spot sound the
whistle to alert players that play is about to begin place the ball at the
throwers disposal

Just reffed my first three rec league games this weekend and found throw in mechanics to be the most confusing. Interestingly, I put the least focus into that area going into the games, not recognizing just how many possible scenarios there are. Trying to get myself better prepared for another batch of games this weekend. Thanks for the great videos!

Hello! When you showed up to ref the games, did you inform your partner that it was your first time? I am trying to gain as much knowledge as I can before I sign up for a game. The training is a little confusing, as it is all self taught and reading. I am trying to find as many videos as I can. Good luck with the rest of your season/career officiating :)

@@minihooper2 I did make my partners aware. I worked with a different guy each game (3 total). Thankfully, they were all nice about it and for the most part helpful. I chatted with them prior to each game and took the opportunity during full timeouts and half time to meet them on the court to ask questions and seek corrections. If you want to give it a try, just go for it! I'm still not sure how much I'll actually enjoy officiating, but I love the game of basketball and I'm proud of myself for trying something new and challenging.

Leon Whaley I have an entire playlist of videos geared towards new officials. Spot of the foul switching in two person all very important.

I am surprised at the number of officials who do not want to rotate. The boxing in principle is so easy to do.

Why do we bounce the ball to the thrower on the sideline but hand it on the end line? Why the distinction?

I don't know the answer to that. But it is what it is.

It's detailed in ref's Mechanics manuals..

@@all4humanityplz I'm sure it's there, but does it explain why it's different? Sorry, I don't have a manual as I'm not a basketball official. Seems like you should bounce pass all the time.

at 16:00 they dont properly "box in" ....theyre both on the same side of the court

At 20:09 ball is handed to thrower, 24...both thrower and ref are scanning ahead, eyes not on ball...now, imagine, thrower fumbles ball forward, reaches for it, one foot stepping in bounds...ref only glimpses the fumble...?

This is good stuff. However, officials should put themselves in position before bouncing the ball to the player making the throw-in. Not, bouncing and backing away. The whole purpose of being able to bounce on throw-ins was to put the official in position to cover at time of throw-in. Also, when Lead official is administering the throw-in Trail official should be 8-10 feet on the court above the players to start! This allows immediate coverage of the throw-in to a player in the grey area if the throw-in is completed to that area - otherwise the trail has to move up to cover which equals potentially missing stuff. If ball is inbounded to low blocks Trail will need to move to cover accordingly. Finally, I disagree with the new mechanic of a throw-in opposite the Trail that the Trail and Lead switch. Too much dead ball time is taken to get the officials in position, where as in under the old mechanics the Trail just hustled over to the other sideline, Lead positioned accordingly - thus only one official is moving significantly instead of two. Much more efficient. Not sure why they changed. Otherwise good stuff.

Gary, I like that. Sometimes though, the movement of the players causes additional movement (position adjust,) and if you are Trail (in 2-person) and step back too far in anticipation of the ball going further back court say, you can be in poor position if ball goes into front court.
@garyncoa
@garyncoa 7 лет назад
Don't move back to cover back court. Move back far enough to give yourself a cushion in case the ball goes to the back court and you don't get run over by the players. Yes, adjust to the players initially. I used to teach Trail being on the sideline FT line extended when Lead is administering a throw-in. Too many times when the ball was inbounded to the "grey" area officials were moving to cover and missing stuff. I have a video showing this but I need to upload to RU-vid.

Cool, I look forward to that.

I could not find the training video I did several years ago showing why trail should be 8-10 feet on the court when lead is administering throw-in versus being FT line extended on the sideline. The computer it was on died last year and I could not find the back up to it. Here's link to some of my training videos on vimeo: vimeo.com/garyfrieders/albums
