With claims of more than 140 ft-lbs of torque, we test and review the all new Ryobi One+ HP Compact Impact Driver to validate. As part of the complete new line of Ryobi HP tools, this compact impact has a small footprint, other than the fat battery, but still delivers some impressive power. Even with the 1/4" to 3/8" hex to square anvil adapter and 3/8" to 1/2" socket adapter, this Ryobi impact driver ripped loose 5 nuts torqued to 100 ft-lbs. Afterward, we tested again at 140 ft-lbs and the Ryobi came through with flying colors.
There are 6 new tools in the HP lineup, and this makes the 3rd tool we've reviewed. Ryobi is cliaming that these tools are ready for the compact PRO market. Time will tell if they fit the mold. We think they can definitely fit the hands of some entry-level pros, but there are limitations.

Thank you for knowing this tool's place and limits, and not abusing it 'til it smokes claiming it's inadequate. Your tool reviews are some of the best out there.

The extra contact isn’t there because the old brushless tools needed one of their hp batteries to get that extra amperage and power from the control board in the battery. These tools moved that control into the tool so you don’t need a specialized battery

Considering that all the tests in this video were meant to push the tool past what it was designed to be capable of, and how it handled them fairly well, I would definitely say this tool is a great option for pros. Compact tools are meant to be light duty tools to fit in tight spaces that normal sized tools cannot. They're not meant to replace full sized tools that have much more power. The fact that this tool performed all of these tests with decent results shows that it is a very capable tool to do what it was designed for.

Great review, thanks for not giving in to the populist trend of destroying tools by abusing them. I love how you push them to their normal design limits (and perhaps a little beyond) and giving us the low down. Ill go for the full size Ryobi HP impact driver as a result of this review as need to drive some 6 inch screws. Thanks for the help in chosing.

I got this a few weeks ago after watching this video a dozen times. As an office nerd who sits at a desk, home owner, and driveway mechanic, this tool has far above and beyond exceeded what I need it for. I'm not very bright, so of course I did use it remove lug nuts from my Honda sedan and Ford SUV ... for fun... Of course. This tiny Ryobi has really been amazing for me. I did notice while mounting a mirror this past weekend in my living room onto drywall, I was careless with the trigger in more than a few instances, and on setting 3, and it too easily destroyed the diameter hole I was aiming for and or stripped the head of the mounting screws. The demonstration in this video is accurate. Terrific. Thank you so much!

Thanks for your video. As a homeowner I purchased all new Ryobi "mostly" compact cordless tools about 3 months ago. 14 of them to be exact. This compact impact driver gets used a lot and comes in super handy when tearing down my bike. Specifically fasteners all around the engine. Honda and most all other manufacturer's don't require a lot of torque on the fasteners do tearing down and assembling a motor is a breeze with the correct extension in place. Have a good one and be blessed! 👍

I know that no one ever just uses a impact tool alone to tighten lug nuts anymore, but everyone always uses a torque wrench to get it exact to spec, then drives 5 miles then re-torques, everyone does this every single time but.... it seems like this tool just happens to be perfect for the task of auto lug nuts, tightens to pretty much 100 ft-lbs and can loosen up to 140 ft-lbs.

When Ryobi moved away from NICAD batteries I found them to perform favorably, ergonomics was lacking up till now with their HD line. I’m DIY and went with Ryobi in the blue days. Cost and finally a company committed to a battery platform. Their old batteries were horrible. Was tempted to jump ship to upgrade. The HP line kept me on board. I do like the slide batteries better of the other makes. Once in the tool it doesn’t matter. The main reason I loved Ryobi is the one battery. Glad they stuck it out. The tools are tough. At least the old chunky ones have been . Hope the HD proves to be the same. The old friction fit drill chucks are easily upgraded . The only bitch I had about the old drills.

I'm using my Ryobi P238 3 Speed Brushless 1/4" Impact Driver to Take out my pickup truck and my medium truck Lugnuts, and it's like it was nothing!! The Ryobi P238 eliminated my needs to get a 3/8th inch Impact Wrench because that driver can do it! I'm also using that driver on my shop when I'm replacing and fixing brakes on my vehicles. Motorcycle, Car, pick-up truck even the medium duty truck can do it too.
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 3 года назад
That's awesome that your Ryobi P238 impact driver can handle this work, but we definitely don't recommend it. That 1/4" drive is not built to take that abuse on a regular basis. This is where a 3/8" or 1/2" anvil delivers more force and can handle more abuse. Thank you for watching and for commenting.

@@Shoptoolreviews oh yes! And I wasn't the only one that saw and proven this. There's a lot of people too, also you see them on RU-vid taking out Lugnuts using the P238 and it's sibling P239 single speed Brushless Impact Driver
@taolang1089
@taolang1089 3 года назад
@@Shoptoolreviews yeah true I agree, most 1/4" impact drivers are not really meant for this kind of job, but Ryobi really pushed it a little bit on the limit. That's why this tool P238, P239 eliminated my needs for a 3/8" impact wrench. Although I still need impact wrench but it's gonna be the 1/2" and because after seeing this video that this Newer Ryobi HP Compact Brushless Impact Driver can take out Lugnuts and have a breakaway force of 140ft lbs then I will consider of having this. But still it's big brother P238 will remain in my toolbox. I think the drill maybe! Because the drill have the same power as the Brushless P252 they're the same and produces 400in/lbs of torque. Not bad! Since I still relying on my P251 Brushless Hammer Drill.

Use my P238 with the 3A battery for the occasional DIY work on my vehicles and used it recently to build a steel and wood carport. Did a great job putting in self tapping/drilling screws in the steel frame and 4" deck screws in wood. Battery life is awesome. It is bulky, but does the job. I like the 3 speed/torque feature. Very pleased with it. Don't see any need to change to this compact version.

The problem with Ryobi is Nobody wants to use their tools in the job sites so that the tool cannot be proven and use as a contractor grade tools. Which is I don't know maybe I'm the only one here that have the Balls to use Ryobi on the job site. Or perhaps only a few people uses it regularly in the jobsite. So far my Ryobi P238 1/4" 3 Speed Brushless Impact Driver have driven 6,100 assorted sizes screws/fasteners. From 2-1/2" deck screws, 3 and 3-1/2" and 4" Decking and Framing screws, 3", 4", 6 and 8" Spax Power Lag Screws. 4" and 6" long 1/2" diameter Lag Bolts (with and without Pre-Drilling) I have changed the tires of my pickup truck by loosening it's Lug nuts many times. I'm also using the driver when I'm working on my Truck. And I have this impact driver P238 since it was released I think somewhere in year 2017. And I'm still abusing the tool. I wanna find out if the Ryobi can really match up with other leading contractor grade tools. Which is I founded that only some of the people uses it on jobsite.

Pretty good review, I know Ryobi did not package it with a HP battery however I would have liked to have seen an HP tool with the HP battery.... Now I do realize this is mainly Ryobi spelling for putting out so many different battery types and confusing their customers.. I wish they would give us one battery type at maximum performance at a time...lol
@mikek5631
@mikek5631 2 года назад
Love the direction Ryobi is heading. These new HP tools are definitely a step up from the home owner entry point they've been known for in the past. I just wish they would stop packaging them in with small 1.5/2.0 batteries. Their messaging is way off course. If these are geared towards the pro-DIYer and even somewhat pro level users then they should be packaged with at minimum 4.0 batteries. I don't know a single pro type user who uses 1.5/2.0 batteries in any of their tools. The biggest deterrent from people jumping into an echo system is the battery entry point. The price of entry turns a lot of people off no matter how good your product is. If Ryobi is truly serious about the Pro-DIYer and even Pro level user than they need to stop putting these great tools in a package with entry level batteries and start offering proper size 4.0 batteries so those users can actually use them on appropriate applications.

That long one at 20:55 did go in slow but you allowed so much of the energy to be lost to the piece of wood that was bot only vibrating but spinning. That is NOT how this tool is used. The energy MUST go into the screw. That's literally the entire point. Allowing the wood to bounce around almost seems deliberate.

I decided to go the other way with a 3/8" impact wrench then use a 3/8 to 1/4 hex adapter. Solves your concern since more tq is required for nuts and bolts then screws. Also, having an impact with 3 speeds and an auto is worth the extra price no matter the brand.

Ryobi claims the the HP technology is now built into the body of the impact. Thus no third terminal in the handle. I was confused too, but they say it takes advantage of the HP battery tech without the need for the third terminal. I have noticed a difference in my new HP impact between non-HP batteries and HP batteries. It struggles to drive in 10 in timberlocks without the HP battery and sort of spools up to finish it with the HP battery.

Correct, all the new HP tools have the HP technology built into the software/firmware/hardware of the tool. Thanks for watching.
@DavidStrchld
@DavidStrchld 3 года назад
I think while it may be able to take some advantage 'built into the tool', I'm not totally buying that there still is no advantage into tapping into the extra terminals, at least without more information. would love a teardown to see what they actually do. I suspect it's some direct battery tap bypassing the protection circuitry/PCB. It does seem like the larger more power hunger XP line still has those extra terminals, and lighter duty HP tools such as the compact impact driver does not. So perhaps it doesn't really come into play till power demand exceeds a certain point.

Yeah I'm not sure how fair some of these tests are for a 1/4 Impact. ONLY in emergencies would I use a anything less than a 3/8. 1/2 for Lugs, Hubs and bearings, Engine mounts. 1/4 driver only on fasteners no higher than 1/2 to 9/16s. Also torquing with an Impact will hardly ever be on par. Some might get close enough but you never want to be to close. Even without a torque wrench and by feel I would only get it snug then feel it out with a ratchet to better control the pressure on the fastener. I wanted to know if it was compact enough to do work underneath on exhaust systems, under carriage fasteners, and engine bay nuts and bolts. Can it fit into tighter spaces since usually my 1/2 and sometimes 3/8 won't without universal and extensions. Good Video tho. If it can move 1 inch fasteners and break loose up 140 is more than enough for rusted under carriage nuts.. 👍

@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 3 года назад
Not in this case because the tool doesn't have the necessary additional pin to communicate with the battery... So behaves just like a regular non-HP battery in this tool... You'll only see a benefit from higher capacity battery... It is curious, though, that the 1.5AH has the same additional pin as a HP battery... 1.5AH can't really output much more than it already does, not enough battery cells for that to work, but it does mean that battery can communicate with a HP+ compatible tool and I'd be curious to see if it performs even a tiny bit better than the regular 1.5 AH batteries normally do in those same tools...
@Shoptoolreviews

The tool does increase power with a larger Ah battery, as shown in the video. The 4Ah battery increased more than 10% over the 1.5Ah. The tool does not have the 3rd pin to take advantage of the "additional" output of HP batteries.
@TheCharleseye
@TheCharleseye 3 года назад
@@ZeoCyberG That third pin has nothing to do with it. Even the old Ni-Cads had that third pin. It's there for interfacing with the battery chargers, not the tools. The brushless tools and HP batteries communicate through two smaller pins that are located on the back of the battery, below the post.
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 3 года назад
@@TheCharleseye You're right but the location of the pins have changed over time... . images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41ZhNpHHYTL._SL500_AC_SS350_.jpg Older NiCad started with no pins at the base, then one then two, then back to one, backwards compatibility kept charger with 2 pins for both chemistries, then with Lithium+ they introduced the HP battery additional pins but keep in mind it's still a DC battery... So any more than 2 pins are for communicating between the battery and tool... I know the front pin is usually for the charger but... . Ryobi Reps have specifically stated the new Compact battery is the first in a new line and introduces new standards in what technology they are putting into the battery as standard and that will likely mean a change in the tools as well and remains to be seen if they need any more pins for the same function as the HP batteries originally provided.
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 3 года назад
@@TheCharleseye I understand what the pins used to be for but the HP tools now self regulate and that's going to be changing some things on how the tools will communicate with the battery going forward... Aside from backwards compatibility... Of course, I could be wrong but that is what I believe Ryobi is doing...

Upgraded from an older 18v kit. ru-vid.comUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

They changed the meaning... New tools have more smart technology, making them more reliable and improving their longevity... Most of their previous tools you run the risk of burning them out and ending up with a paper weight instead of a tool when you push them too hard, but these have safety cut offs, and will flash an indicator light to let operator know the status of the tool and if there's a problem... But these are compact tools, not high end tools. So they're not going to push the performance limits other than what you can get from this size tool from Ryobi... Previously, the 12v was your only option and that was pretty much limited to just a drill driver... The HP being on the tools, though, means going forward all their tools are going to be smarter and perform better overall... That'll just be different from whether or not they will push the performance limits...

IMO don't waste your time with this one. Been using Ryobi since the blue days so I am dedicated to the brand. Bought the combo deal at Home Depot a couple weeks as an upgrade from my 7+ year old brushed impact driver. Just finished building a shed and can say the new brushless compact drives screws way slower and doesn't bury them near as well as my old impact. Sum it up as disappointed.

Ryobi really messed up. The only good thing about this impact is it's a little more compact and lighter. The first flaw is it's not compatible with the hp batteries. It doesn't have the extra battery contacts for the extra power. Two is the mag trey isn't there and I've always boasted about Ryobi drills having this. Ryobi should've done better , it's a waste of a upgrade. If your gonna have a upgrade don't take any of the other good features away. Believe it or not I'm a huge Ryobi fan and have a load of they're tools but this is a big let down. Id invest in milwaukee or makita. They still reign
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. While you make some absolutely truthful remarks about features, I do want to clarify a couple, as we see them. I don't think these were considered to be an "Upgrade" from other Ryobi tools. These were meant to be a completely new tool line to meet compact and power-to-weight goals, and they've done a pretty good job of this. The extra battery contacts are not needed, as the software/firmware is built into the tool now to make use of the HP batteries, without the extra tab. Milwaukee and Makita are both great choices, but they're typically more expensive than Ryobi. Thanks again for watching and for the comment.
