Don't have to be a leader, but funding an education system that produces educated and decent human beings would be a good start, as well as building a system that looks after its people instead of fleecing them for everything they've got when they fall ill. The only thing that differentiates a caveman and a civilized human is education, and a country and its future is only as good as its people.

If anything, Maher was being too polite here. I've never seen so many people just forget so many of their values they claim to believe in at a drop of a hat. Family values. Personal responsibility. Being a person who honors their word. Poof. Gone. It's magic. I have no right to lecture Americans on their internal politics. But I deeply admire the US Constitution: flawed as it may be, it's an example to the world. I feel I have every right to protest the personal qualities of this mob, and what they're trying to do to it. Come on, America, protect your most precious asset.

I feel I have no right *because*, above all, I value the US Constitution. I wish we had one in the UK. If we had had a robust constitution, which clearly distinguished between ordinary policy and more deeply entrenched constitutional reform, then I believe, for example, both the decisions, to join the EEC, and to leave the EU, would have required large parliamentary majorities. Because I value the Constitution, I have to insist that Americans can vote for whoever they want to, for whatever reasons.That's democracy, in a republic. I must also trust, so long as that Constitution holds up, there is nothing to fear in the long run, whichever crazy or mobster gets voted into office. The power of the President was carefully limited by the Founding Fathers. However, if I feel the Constitution itself is threatened, then I feel entitled to speak up.
