Rule number one for owning a generator: secure it as best as you can. Generators are a highly sought after item for thieves - and they will steal a running generator! It only takes a few seconds with a cordless angle grinder to cut through a chain or a plastic housing. If you want the generator to last, change the oil much sooner than the recommended 100 hours, and always let it warm up before putting a load on it. Never store the generator with ethanol-based fuel in the carburetor. Lastly, don't run the generator for extended periods at more than 80% of the stated running watts.
