I have been buying speakers since 1975 when I was in the Navy and had my first real spending money, (168 bucks every two weeks). I never believed in speaker burn in until I bought a pair of Klipsch R-28F speakers. The treble was really distorted. I played them for two days on a radio station and they sounded great afterward!

i bought the FOCALPOLIKEVLAR components line for my car decades ago. listening it for the first time along with my rockford fosgate amp was a total disappointing and made me wonder; is this the sound what i paid for? it sounded like tinny, real crap i just thought. playing it for a couple of days then made it sound a lot better, it was night and day. how i love those speakers sing! so i must say, speaker break in is true, my ears just can't lie. fast forward today and one of the drivers(woofer) now dead. bought a new pair and i'm into breaking it in.

Don't play high volume high frequency sine waves through your tweeters. They are built to reproduce high frequency content at the intensity and duration of typical music, and doing so could cook the drivers - and your ears will also hate you if you're in the same room as the speakers.

I Know My POLK AUDIO Monitor 75T Sounded Alot "Warmer" and Had Better "Depth" To Them After About 2yrs Of Solid Use (Music and Movies). As a Side Note I Also Do This For My Headphones That I Purchased. My FOCAL Elegias Had 3hr and Even 10hr RU-vid Content Played Through Them While I Was Either Asleep at Work Just So I Could Speed Up The Break-In Period.

Do you reommend any brake-in music discs or are you aware of any professional testing/brake-in disc/files/software for consumer to give new speakers a quality workout without damaging the units?
@HomeTheaterHobbyist
@HomeTheaterHobbyist 3 года назад
Some people recommend using white noise or pink noise. But as I said in the video using real content with dynamic range is probably better because you’re getting various frequencies and dynamics to help loosen what maybe a stiff component.
@sychosez
@sychosez 9 месяцев назад
What about using a test tone for break in?
@HomeTheaterHobbyist
@HomeTheaterHobbyist 9 месяцев назад
If you're going to use tones, I would use several across the frequency range to ensure you're excising all the drivers.
@sychosez
@sychosez 9 месяцев назад
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist for home speakers I would definitely use a tone sweep. But I'm actually going to break in my, 6.5" woofer from part of the component set, for my vehicle. Was thinking about just looking up the lowest attainable frequency for the woofer, then using that tone to break it in. Should exercise it enough to loosen it's mechanism. Your thoughts on this, please?

I'm planning on buying Klipsch RP-600Ms or RB-61 IIs. But due to living in quiet building I can't run them at the needed break-in volume. What on earth am I going to do if I don't want to buy used?
@HomeTheaterHobbyist
@HomeTheaterHobbyist 2 года назад
That's a good question! This is a stupid suggestion but I'll make it.......... Do you have a closet with clothes that is away from shared walls? You could put them in there during the break in period (the clothes will absorb some of the sound). If you can get them up to 50 or 60% volume that should work just fine and maybe extend the amount of break in hours from 50 to 75 hours. Just a few quick thoughts, hopefully it helps!

@AB-80X
@AB-80X 2 года назад
@@dixonpinfold2582 Here's a suggestion which many of us have used for years. Place the speakers facing each other so close that they are almost touching. Then connect one of them out of phase. Then throw a heavy blanket and some clothes over them while they are playing. Just an addition. Sometimes depending on the distance between the speakers, connecting them in phase might work better, so try that too. You can also try and adjust the time alignment on one of the speakers as this will sometimes create even more cancellation.

What about setting the AVR to pure direct?
@HomeTheaterHobbyist
@HomeTheaterHobbyist 3 года назад
That only sends the signals that the disc author intends so there maybe moments without signals. I said multi channel in the video because then you know all the speakers you’re breaking in are receiving an audio signal. But that setting is good for movies with a lot of surround if you’re breaking in a 5,1 system. 😁
@monijam1
@monijam1 3 года назад
Thanks for the video. I would also suggest that people purchase a "burn-in" disc. These are cd's designed specifically to help speakers achieve burn-in by playing various test tones & songs that cover the sound spectrum from 20Hz-20000kHz.

Speaker burn in is logical. The one that is hard to believe without evidence is cable burn in or electronic burn in. In general I do believe in burn in for most things not just audio....I'm talking like a cook top range or a refrigerator or air conditioner. I just think it's logical that mechanical parts and systems do benefit from a continuous use time table. Using a special file that produces frequencies across the spectrum will burn in a speaker better than general music playback. Burn in servers two purposes better playback and less risk to potential damage. Burn in is not BS and any logical person can easily understand why it's not, but there are levels to it that can leave a person with incredulous beliefs and that is with most people burn in for cables. The only real way I can see that cables have a burn in is if it can be proven that a cable physically changes from continuous use.

Doesn't work if you have neighbours but play Three Pound Chicken Wing on repeat at close to maximum volume and your speakers should be nice and loose as well as your picture frames. Pink noise you'll probably have to turn up to the level of Niagara Falls to get the woofers moving properly and then the mid and tweeter may suffer.

Not Convinced? Buy the speakers, time your initial 100 hours. Buy an additional pair and do a side-by-side comparison for a few days. You might find out that , The maker says this to have you keep them and not return them immediately. If they really cared about how you experience their products the manufacture would break them in themselves.

@AB-80X
@AB-80X 2 года назад
Problem with that is, that you condition your ears. There's to old saying. Are you breaking in the speakers, or are they breaking in you. I take a quick RTA picture of the speakers before, and a quick listen. Then I don't come back until they are done. Then I do another measurement to see if there's any difference which confirms what I'm hearing. Some speakers react very will to break-in, others don't care at all. Some manufactures also break in their speakers prior to them leaving the factory. Check this so that you are not wasting your time with a long break-in. If they are broken in from the factory, a few hours may be all it takes to get the last bit from them. Remember that if your speakers sit idle for prolonged periods of time, they will need a bit of excMonitor Audio SILVER W12ersize to get going again. The same is the case for pre-broken in speakers that might have been living in a box for a month or two.

For reference they were in sale for 300 each when they r usually 600 each. Klipsch reference f820s I googled them and they had good reviews but as we speak I am hearing them and they suck. They are actually the speakers ur using for the video! That’s cool I didn’t see them till almost a few minutes in because I was busy typing. Wish me luck

i just bought the same speakers and thought the same until adjusting and playing at moderate levels for 2 evenings. they sound great now but, they require power, i have 100, and i think to get the most from them 120 minimum is required. also being a new technology, new entertainment genre (home theater) these speakers are geared more towards that than music. musically they require a 5.1 minimum setup for music. i play music on just the fronts anyway, i'm an old school musician... good luck
