Breaking in Studio Monitors (The Burn In Process) | ADAM Audio
ADAM Audio Product Manger, Stephan Mauer discusses why burning in your studio monitors after purchase is important. Burning in your monitors directly after purchase is crucial for making sure you trust your monitors and they give you the best audio reproduction for mixing, producing & tracking.
Do you have questions about breaking in your speakers? Leave them in the comments below 👇
ADAM Audio was founded in March 1999 in Berlin. Since then the company has been developing, manufacturing and distributing loudspeakers in the field of Professional Audio.
The development of the X-ART (eXtended Accelerating Ribbon Technology) tweeter based on the 1960’s invention of the Air Motion Transformer by Oskar Heil was largely responsible for the company’s founding. Producing sound not with a piston-like diaphragm as is done in most of the loudspeakers that are on the market, but using a pleated diaphragm that is capable of moving the air 4 times faster than the folds themselves are moving was the appealing idea behind it all. The achieved results were intriguing and gave ample reason for moving forward.

Adam speakers may be fine, but other speakers may literally burn by pink noise. Many speakers cannot accept much continuous power especially at low end and high end frequencies.

Those are the monitors I want to upgrade to. I decided on those after seeing Rupert Neve test his 5088 consoles with the A77X models. I'm currently using a vintage pair of NS10M's I bought new in 1986 with a subwoofer.
@emiel333
@emiel333 3 года назад
@@azzinny Agree partially. If you don’t crank up the volume to it highest setting, pink noise isn’t a problem. A safe level would be between 40 and 50% volume.
@DaftFader
@DaftFader Год назад
@@emiel333 This is correct, however for burn in purposes pink noise isn't ideal anyway, as you want something that moves the speakers a lot. Something rhythmic and/or something containing a lot of low end energy is ideal as it gets the spider moving a lot, and expedites the process. You want to burn them in with quite high spl (as it makes sure they are settled within the time frame suggested, as that would of been the expectation from the manufacturer usually), if you only have them at 50%, it may take up to twice as long to fully settle as the spider isn't fully being moved through out it's entire extension. Something like dynamic music or simply just a pulsating low sine (so as to give the driver full motion but not be asking for peak power constantly, just part of the time).

Got my first pair of adams this weekend. The T8V's! Love them so far even though they arent fully burned in. I dont mix on them but they are lovely for normal music listening in a "smaller" livingroom. Im coming from a passive hifi system which cost atleast 3x as much as the T8V. They are simply amazing!

I bought a new bike saddle once, and got back a few days after to the bike shop, telling the shop keeper that my behind aches and I hope that after a few rides, the saddle would break in and adjust to my butt form. The guy said, oh, something will adjust in time for sure, but it will be your butt, not the saddle! I always thought that speakers break in is one of those audiophiles voodoo myths, so hearing it from a formal representative of a company is something new to me.

Overhyped bloodles speakers. Ive heard them for first time in like, krk8, adam t7v, presonious eris xt7 and im disappointed. Sounds narrow, mono, flat without any depth od 3D image and small, like you turn at max headphones, no one has bass and have 140w but sounds like 10w speakers, crazy dumb. I think its sold to douches that think they are above average

Hello, just got my Adam t7v’s yesterday. (Sound great)When I make the speakers completely out of phase with one another, as expected, there is barely any sound with frequency sweep type audio and also barely any speaker movement. Isn’t it the point to exercise the speaker to burn them in? So What should I be using if I want to to use the out of phase method? Pink noise, just music. Thanks!

I own a pair of Adam A77X. They are a dream to record and mix through. Why do you have the mid-range driver on the inside and not the outside, which produces a wider stereo image? I use the mid-range driver on the outside by placing the B monitor to my left and the A monitor to my right. They sound amazing either way. I've had them both ways round but prefer the wider image. Are there any technical drawbacks (such as phase issues) to configuring them this way?

ADAM audio Can you please elaborate about facing the speakers towards one another for the sound canceling effect? How close to one another? Do I need to do anything other than face them to each other to get this effect? Thank you
@ADAMAudioBerlin
@ADAMAudioBerlin 2 года назад
Hi there! The speakers can be placed relatively close together, but leave some space for airflow. You might need to experiment a bit and see how the cancellation works best in your surrounding. For the left and right signals to cancel each other out, one signal must be rotated in phase. To do this, you can play two signals in the DAW. One signal is completely paned to the left and the other to the right side. Now one of the signals must be rotated in phase. Usually, there is a phase rotation button, but this works differently in each DAW or sampler. Especially bass frequencies should be reliably canceled out this way. I hope I was able to help. All the best, Daniel 😊

Bought a pair of Adams A7x about a year ago and hated them. Now a year later after being put away in my storage room I find them sounding a lot better. Luckily I did not sell them. I have a question for the ADAM team... is there a huge difference between the Sub10 and the T10s... I mean I know one is the price, power, amplification etc but I mean a bad kick will sound bad even on the most expensive subwoofer in the world. And vice versa...
@ADAMAudioBerlin
@ADAMAudioBerlin 4 года назад
Hi Ricardo, yes both subwoofers will show you accurate low-end with your system... the biggest consideration is the difference in power, however. Where the T10s has over 10dB less power than the A7Xs, giving you a large discrepancy in the SPL between your sub and satellites. The T10s has been designed for our T Series, where the power is similar and will give you an accurate low-end at an accurate level. The Sub10 is SPL matched with our A7Xs giving you an extremely accurate frequency range... The other option is dual T10s subwoofers with your A7Xs.

Hi there! We recommend using them at 0dB. The maximum SPL is 118 dB, so you shouldn't exceed this level. So it's safe to use the speaker between 0dB and +18dB as long as you don't exceed the max. SPL.

Hi John! You need to do that with software. In your DAW, you can play a sound file and pan it completely to one side. Then you can double that sound, pan it completely to the other side and invert the phase. To avoid any problems coun make the sound mono before. Many plugins and every DAW has tools to make a sound mono. All the best, Daniel.

Hi Jonny! You don't have to burn them in all at one time. The question is if you listen loud enough to really burn them in. Hi ARSEFACE! The purpose of burning them face to face is to avoid the loud noise/sound when burning them at a high volume. Positioning them face to face and inverting the phase of one of them, the low frequencies will cancel out and you (and your neighbors) won't be exposed to 8 hours of noise on a high volume :)

Burning in process will change the behavior of the tweeters frequency too or only the woofers ? Tried out T8V's for a few weeks at home and replaced it to T7V's because the frequencies came from the tweeters caused serious tinnitus while i listened them on a very moderate sound levels. Now i got the T7V's becasue i believed these 8 inch monitors are simply too large for my relatively small room and downgraded to them but the tinnitus problem still exist. Moderate volume levels (in fact much lower as i used to listen on hifi systems). Hello, do you have any paper work which actually show that break-in is real? If you want to be sure that your speaker that you sell for monitoring, why don't you do this break(in to be sure it will have the specified specifications?
@ADAMAudioBerlin
@ADAMAudioBerlin Год назад
Hello! We have no documents for publication that demonstrate metrologically the difference between monitors that have gone through the burn-in process versus those that have not yet gone through this process. With the S Series, we perform the process at our factory, and the user receives a product that has already been burned in. For all other products, the process is not carried out. We always try to offer a very good price/performance ratio with all our products. With the S series, we provide a product that is already burnt in, as this is a premium product. Burning in a T series for several hours at the factory would impose unnecessary costs on the users, as this process can easily be carried out by the users themselves. So we recommend to proceed according to the video and burn in the monitors, but this is not mandatory. Let us know if you have more questions :)
@muninm1
@muninm1 Год назад
Hello, first of all, thanks for the answer and to be honest I did not expect I will get some. So, again thanks for the time. Second I really like your monitors, they allways been amazing to me and this feeling have been conforted by the forum Audiosciencereview. They mesure speakers with the kilppel products and this gave real good objectiv reviews and measure. By the way your T5V appears to be a real great speaker. What I want to say it's that I have no animosity against you or anything like that. I am just curious and a science oriented dude. So, after what you said in the first paragraph, I really don't get why you still recommend the break-in as long as you seem to have no proof that it's actually do something? From my point of view, suggering the break-in or burn-in period, it's promotting fake science in audio and for a brand like you it's not showing a bright side. Even if your speaker are really good. You don't need to promote this kind of things, you are good how you are. Thanks, Guillaume.

How loud should the volume be?
@ADAMAudioBerlin
@ADAMAudioBerlin 10 месяцев назад
Hi Doonoo! Low to Moderate Volume: When burning in studio monitors, it's generally recommended to use a low to moderate volume level. You don't need to play music at extremely high volumes; in fact, doing so may risk damaging your speakers or your hearing. Use Normal Listening Levels: Set the volume to a level that is similar to what you would use for normal listening. You want the speakers to experience a typical range of frequencies and dynamics that they would encounter during regular use.

but, if you turn them face to face they will be out of phase and cancel each other so why do we need to phase invert one of them ?

Hi Tranceporter! They might be out of phase, but the polarity is not inverted. These terms are often used as synonyms, but they mean different things.
@tranceporter6176
@tranceporter6176 2 года назад
@@ADAMAudioBerlin I assume that by facing the speakers we're trying to make the sum of their sound cancel each other ... if the speakers are facing each other but playing normally without polarity inversion, their cones will be moving in opposite directions which would be the same as inverting the polarity of one of them if they were facing the listener ... my understanding is that polarity inversion of one speaker would cause some cancellation if they are facing the listener, because one cone is moving forward while the other is moving backward (if we take a simple sine wave for example) ... if they are facing each other then isn't that equal to polarity inversion? ... and while i'm thinking of this, i realize that distance would affect too, some frequencies will be cancelled and some added, no? ... just trying to understand :)

This is a bit late but basically when you get new speakers they are saying it is smart to “burn them in” by playing certain music through the speakers that has a wide range of frequencies from low, mid, and high.
