I've been a barber for six years now. Sometimes guys have trouble getting a close shave near the corner of their mouth, especially if they have a goatee, so they ask me what they can do about it. I give them a little wooden ball that they can put between their gum and their cheek. One guy asked me, "So, what if I swallow it?" I said, "Just return it tomorrow like everyone else."

I bought a Dovo Bismark. Got one good shave out of the box and that was it. Not sure whether to risk honing it. Even that one shave did not compare to smoothness I get from Bluebeards Revenge Shavette.

Just got myself a Dovo. I feel the edge is about 7 out 10 out of the box. Would've liked to see you shave the mustache and chin area, cause those coarser hairs give me trouble with the factory edge. Rest of my face went pretty smoothly.

You had a cat that ate the mouse smirk....Geo, after watching this video Im buying one of two things the SNDovo or a Harley. I was going to buy my first srt8 from the man the myth the legend Lynn Abrams. You showed the model #. He sells them too. THIS IS YOUR VARIATION. You sold this razor to me. I have never seen such a confident backing of a product. Great video.

Its true for the most part, every dovo I bought that wasn't pro honed were absolutely shave ready. I am currently getting ready to do my 4th shave on a silver steel, all I have done is stropped on plain leather between shaves. One of my better razors! Even the Dovo best quality blades I have were very acceptable out of the box. They finish their blades on a coticule!

How can I choose a good soap without smelling it first? I can't find anything locally besides 2-3 "artisan" shave soaps my only option of buying local is pretty much Dove or equivalent bar soap

i actually tried this when i first got my dovo. it was an acceptable shave--i know some guys on the forums claim it comes duller than a butter knife. but after getting it to the local honemeister, who is a certified dovo service provider here in LA, the shave i got after it was professionally honed was just insane, incredible really. not even close to the factory edge it came with. so if it's your first razor and you have the extra 20 bucks, i'd still recommend getting it "blessed" haha

Interesting concept for a video, thanks. Did I imagine it or were you slightly less enthusiastic about finishing your shave with this one than with razors you've used in other videos? This is the first video I've seen of yours I think where you've not finished the shave in one go, on camera. (and the stop came before the phone call). Would I be right in thinking, "Yeah, you can shave with a razor straight from the factor; but it's not ideal!"? Thanks again for the videos. I'm on a DE at the moment and watched your videos before moving from the multi-blade cartridges that I was using before. Now I'm thinking of SR.

Well i can sharpen knives no problem have them shaving arm hair quick but i have i beleive an american an a pride straoght razor an to get them sharp enough to shave takesto long you have a vid on how to get them shave ready an i just cant seem to get them there have i bought cheap an dnt know it or what keep having to revert back to my safety razor

+Marvin Thomas - Try a shavette before you spend the big bucks. Then you can see if you like the straight razor thing. Being limited on funds is something I am VERY used to.

Sorry, I have a Dovo razor, and it was definitely NOT shave ready when I got it. It was basically unusable until I had it honed by a professional hone-meister. The only razor I have that came truly shave-ready was the Boker H. Boker & co. 4/8" carbon steel straight razor.

Hey, found a great way to get tarnish from your straight razor and with practice, how to hone it in seconds!Secret is a dremel, with the felt pads .run them over chromium oxide and just buff it up. You can hone a rubbish edge with up and down passes equal on each side.

I just bought a dovo this week, here in Germany, and it was dull and couldn't cut arm hair. Ended up taking it back for another but it still required stropping.

George check out geofatboy on RU-vid. He’s with Shavenation and does a fantastic job demonstrating how to get your razor scary sharp. I’ve since gotten my own stones and a legit Amish strop. No more problems shaving. Butter smooth

I'm sure I'm the exception to the rule, but I just returned a brand-new Dovo razor that came not only dull as a butter knife, but so warped that it couldn't be honed without doing a full restoration.

I can't seem to get my razor sharp. I honed it and it's crazy sharp. and I stroped it too and I can cut paper with no effort. cuts the hair on my arm fine and leg. but when it comes to my face it doesn't do so well.. any advice or help would be appreciated

Never cut paper with a razor. The cutting edge is incredible fragile and in every paper is some dirt oder little particles that can dull your razor. If its sharpened correctly strop in a few times on a blank leather strop with light pressure. After that it should cut oder whittle a free hanging hair (YT: hanging hair test)

Hi, I recently bought a "Rapide" razor and followed your instructions on using a wetstone and leather (the wetstone is a 600/2000 grit) and even though the blade seem sharp, it's not took any hair from my face??? I'm presuming I am doing something incorrectly. Can you please help

Say Geo, this is probably a question for Lynn, but now that you mention it, if a 12 000 grit stone is all you need to refresh an edge once, for a year, (I shave once a week as you mentioned), then is a 12000 grit or anything above 8000 all I really ever need assuming I just keep regular maintenance and not abuse or neglect the razor?

Yes, As long as you don't nick or damage the blade, you should be able to keep it fresh with the 8-12 grit stone.

Stropping does not sharpen the blade, honing does.

Stropping realign the edge so... L O is doing it right. I would “try” the factory edge, but most importantly strop the factory edge to get the most potential out of it. You don’t need to hone every time you need to strop. You would end up with a low razor life span.

Geo, twos quick clarifications for us beginners: The vast majority of SE razors are not shave ready out of the box, unlike this DOVO you describe. So do SE razors need to be professionally honed BEFORE resorting to home maintenance with home honing with stropping and/or stones, or is chromium oxide and stones enough to create the necessary edge? Also, are Arkansas stones too weak to use and 8-12k the minimum necessary? Thanks in advance!

Nagib, I'm not sure what more proof you need. I'm shaving with the razor right out of the pkg. All DOVO razors are shipped like this... It's not a "magic" razor. Here is a more recent video showing me doing mustache/beard removal with another Dovo razor right out of the box: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7GRoYUPazOQ.html The DOVO rep visited Shave Nation over the summer and emphatically stated that the razors are 100% Shave Ready when they ship them out. Strop it prior to every shave and enjoy it!

You can get a great shave from stainless steel but it may be a bit more difficult to sharpen. Carbon steel is more popular, easier to sharpen.

That's great that that one came shave ready. My Dovo 6/8 Bismarck definitely did not come shave ready. Mine may have been one that slipped past QC.

Apropos to how sharp a razor is, how can one tell if a straight razor needs honed or just a touch up with a strop?

When the strop no longer gets the razor sharp enough for a smooth shave, you'll feel it starting to tug instead of slicing cleanly through the beard. Then its time to visit the stone for a touch-up!

man I bought one and I assure you it was not shaved ready. Shaving my head I would assume should feel no pain or no tugging. My first and second shave both felt like if the razor was pulling my hair out instead of cutting it. I would say they put an edge on the blade but they do not get it shave ready

I'm calling this out on the point of bias. They have your name on it so they went the extra mile to have it shave ready. From my research there is a discrepancy from companies in that they are not consistent from razor to razor.

Hunt Cramer The more you spend, up to a point, the better. Art of Shaving has REALLY good Thiers Issard razors for about $160 ($130 when I bought them from there.). You can get a decent Dovo for about $120, any less than that and you are likely buying a non-carbon steel (i.e. stainless steel) razor that *absolutely can not* get sharp enough to shave your face with >>**COMFORTABLY**

I bought a brand new Dovo straight razor 7 months ago. It gave me the worst shave of my life, even a month old used cartridge shaver absolutely beat the Dovo razor in every regard. I kept using it and refining my skill with it until now, kept stropping it and so on. I am still unable to get an acceptable shave out of it and it is impossible to go against the grain with it, it gets stuck on single hair follicles. It doesn't even take the smooth hair on my forearms off in a clean fashion. I have pocket knifes with about the same sharpness as the Dovo factory edge. That's my 2 cents, just wanted to vent. I will get it honed soon and give it another shot. Its just very frustrating to hear Dovo and people defending it and hailing it as the best thing on the planet when its so far from being all that. Especially considering the price...

This honestly sounds like either an exception to their normal product or a lack of skill toward whoever honed it. Not an attack, just saying that if you've had a razor long enough that you keep stropping it then there's something wrong with the person. Also stropping is not sharpening.

I own a "Gold dollar" razor and it works well, I wouldn't be surprised if the brand was put on the "do not buy" list because of budget reasons.

Hey, I'm new to straight razors, but I have been watching a lot of your videos as a "preparation", and you said, there were 6 in that package you opened, right? That has left me a bit confused. I thought a straight razor could be used almost forever, if stropped and honed properly. Am I completely wrong or were those in your video disposiable or something? Sorry for the stupid question

+Kenpachi Zaraki You are correct, purchase one straight razor and you can use it for many years. A lot of the items we sell at www.shavenation.com/ come in packages of 6 or more. This razor requires stropping and occasional honing, it is definitely not meant to be disposable.

😂 In my experience It's not true and .🥶🥶🥶They came not shave ready unless you asked for it to them o to another or provide yourself at least in the past. I don't think nothing has changed.🤭 It was dull like a knife with no teeth🤣🤭!
