Trek released the new-generation Domane last week. A review bike was unboxed at Park Bikes at Olympic Park in Sydney and I went along to record the first observations of mechanic (and shop owner) Nash Kent.
This is not meant as a bike build video, rather a chance to see the new Trek Domane as it came out of the box and then get some thoughts from Nash while he put it together. It was ready to ride within an hour...
This is part 2 of a #BikeTest series about the Trek Domane SLR7.

Looking forward to watching any further videos you post about your Domane. I've already placed an order for the new Domane SL frameset in the Hex blue colour and I'm looking forward to getting it. Was told at my local Trek store to be patient as the estimated delivery times could change. I'm very keen to transfer all the components from my existing older Domane onto the new frameset and build my new bike.

Thanks for the great video! Had an order in for 22’ Domane SL6 since Nov 2021 but Trek updated it. Looking forward to receiving my 23’ Domane SL6 in Satin Black early Nov according my LBS…🤙🏽

I like the look of this bike, now its as light as my 2020 Emonda SL7 (I got deeper wheels), no weight penalty for the extra comfort. I do seriously hope you do a video on the new Madone when that comes out. Keen to see what they can do with all the new aero tech

I bought one about a month ago and have ridden it once. The seat collapsed and the suspicion it is because it has the old design seat clamp and carbon paste was used during the install of the seat post. My understanding is only alcohol should be used in the seat post assembly.

Did you happen to have a RSL version come though the shop , I’m looking for a comparison in the rear for tire clearance . Trek says 35mm for this model but they also say 38mm for the SLR model and people are running 40’s with no issues Thanks and great video!

Can you drop the front fork out completely to allow servicing of the headset bearings? That brake hose routing looks quite tight.

Does this slr have the same geometry as the domane sl6 gen 4? Why does the sl6 have so many spacers in front in comparison with this type of domane?

what is the weight of the bike Rob? I know Domane are not weight weenies but just curious if they made it at least 8kg or lower now.

I saw a build video of the RSL version which doesn't have the storage or fender mounts, etc. It was was 7.72 kg fully built with cages and pedals. This bike is probably 7.9/8.1 kg
@ride-media
@ride-media Год назад
Ian, It weighs in at 8.2kg* (fully built, complete with pedals, two bottle cages, computer mount with Wahoo Elemnt Bolt, and tools neatly tucked away in the housing inside the down tube). *Note: often bike tests reference weights that are considerably lighter than what I’ve mentioned but that’s can be when it comes off the workstand and before the sundry elements are added… but no one rides a bike without pedals, so the weight I’ve referenced relates to the Domane as it is - ie. ready to ride!
@ride-media
@ride-media Год назад
@@salsalawyer - good guess. Very close. (Note: I might have even weighed this once I'd put a bottle in the cage.)
@iancruz2304
@iancruz2304 Год назад
@@ride-media thanks Rob for the detailed response. 8.2kg is not bad at all with all the accessories. Pedals alone weigh around 300 grams.

Hats off to Trek for the 38 mm tyre clearance! I'm eager to hear your thoughts 🙂 Friendly suggestion: Install a chain catcher on the front derailleur before it throws the chain onto the frame. The Force eTap AXS front derailleur can be unruly and fincky, no matter how diligently a rider/mechanic tunes it to spec (even with SRAM's official FD alignment tool). On one bike it will behave itself, on another bike it will have a mind of its own. In January I purchased a 2022 bike with Force eTap AXS and within six months I replaced the groupset with Shimano Di2. I tried everything I could to avoid ditching Force (love the eTap AXS concept, fantastic rear shifting + I didn't have money to just buy a new bloody groupset), but my goodness, the front derailluer was a never-ending source of frustration and anxiety - it literally ruined the joy of riding my new bike ... I'm still recovering 😣
@ride-media
@ride-media Год назад
James, Interesting. I've had very few issues with the front derailleur. Once in a while, it throws the chain over the big ring, but I keep on pedalling, downshift and ... problem solved. (Not pretty, and I'd not like it to happen when it is pissing down rain and I'm on a descent in a bunch... but that's not been the case for my incidents.) That said, I do understand how frustrating it could be. The rear derailleur on my personal bike - ie. the first release of Force AXS, without a short cage - doesn't like it if I freewheel in some gears and it can cause the chain to come off the front mech. Is that what you experienced? - Rob
@scottwelfare7311
@scottwelfare7311 Год назад
Trek supplies a chain catcher with the frame. It should already be fitted to the frame when you take it out of the box.
@james5150
@james5150 Год назад
@@ride-media There was no obvious rhyme or reason when my FD threw the chain onto the frame, but I think it happened more often when I was pedalling softly and shifting to the small chainring.

Not a fan of the flat black. It makes it look like an ordinary 8 year old bike. You need bright colors to accentuate the curves.

DULL DARK colour! Matte black bikes should be banned! Not only are they horrible but also dangerous.

"Banned"? "Horrible"? "Dangerous"? That's a little extreme for descriptions of a bike colour... but it's your take on the matte-r (note: very minor pun achieved, but not planned). - Rob

can always wear bright colours and turn ur lights on for the safety. Personally i like looking at bikes like that, but I'd never ride one bc I prefer rolling on something a little more flashy. It is your pride and joy after all, may as show it off a little
@KoreaRides
@KoreaRides Год назад
@@ride-media banned because they look terrible mostly! I own one, but it’s from 2016 and I hate it! Bike companies keep churning out matte black cus it’s easier and cheaper imo lacking any ideas colour wise. Giant has been the king of conservative dullness for the last few years. Let’s just ignore that terrible pun, eh?
@ride-media
@ride-media Год назад
@@KoreaRides - you're right... it was probably the worst pun I have ever conjured. Please excuse me. Third ride on this bike just completed. Dry overhead (ie. no rain) but wet underneath (ie. recent downpour and plenty of puddles and muck on the road)... and the matte finish is like a magnet to the grit. A different colour won't make the mud stay away but it might not stand out quite so much. Either way, I take your point... especially after having gone through that period around 2010s when almost all bikes we reviewed (and there were plenty) were either black or blacker...! - Rob
@KoreaRides
@KoreaRides Год назад
@@ride-media each to their own I guess, but I won’t be buying matte black again ( in fact I didn’t want it in 2016, but the only SHADE left). Good thing about trek and specialized is they at least offer alternatives. They are both probably the best when it comes to colours for bikes. I’m in a mid life colour crisis you might say and if I see one more black bike I might just go crazy!
