Good idea on tying down the fruit tree branches. I've got one pear that grew almost straight up so it doesn't fruit as well as the others. I've used all kinds of different things to tie them over the years. Old plastic coated phone cords work pretty well.

If’n I recall aright, Joel Salatin’s son went through something similar when he started to breed rabbits. In the early days he lost many from various causes, but by allowing them to cull themselves he ended up with some virtually indestructible stock which is in high demand.

Yes, I recall him talking about it! He wanted rabbits that’d live on grass/hay as he didn’t want to keep buying feed/pellets for them.

Every time I see your videos, I yearn to grow mine to emulate yours. I’m a year or two behind but today I had my first blueberry from one of the blueberry bushes I planted this spring. What a joy it is to go from rock hard clay to fruitful soil and tasting the results of your sweat and tears. I have Pak Choy and Tatsoi growing but the dreaded cabbage loopers got to it. I’ve pulled all the damaged leaves and I’m going to apply some eucalyptus oil around the bases of the stems. I’m also looking for Neem oil, I had some but lost it. My first zucchinis, melons and pumpkins are also forming fruit. Hickory king corn is now about as tall as I am. Also planted Cherokee Tan pumpkins, Cherokee Purple tomatoes, Nancy Hall and regular orange sweet potatoes, Cushaw and 3 other types of squash, cucumbers and radishes, peppers, etc. Things are starting to take hold and the ground under some areas of wood chips is feeling spongy. There’s more to tell you, but I’m just elated to see the growth! Just received Amaranth and Sorghum seeds today. They’ll be in the ground tomorrow.

Thank you for all the help you provide! Tying up is a great solution! There are also limb spacers in different sizes and materials specifically designed for this. I have a tiny property so I'm considering both espalier and keeping my fruit trees a manageable size. A great book on this is "Grow a Little Fruit Tree" by Ann Ralph. I'm in zone 5b MA.

@18:00 You could take advantage of those rootstocks suckering. Deliberately mound them or airlayer the root stock, make copies of them. Now you have rootstocks, that you can graft whatever variety of tree is compatible. Thanks for all your info.

I made some comfrey salve off of two leaves of the comfrey I got from y’all. And all I can say is this stuff is amazing. Simple. I’ve had a knee issue since a bad fall mid march. And within 24 hours I could see a major improvement. Now 6 days later it feels perfectly fine. I had ankle replacement 4 years ago and I’ve had an issue w tenderness that never has eased since the surgery. Well. It ain’t healed yet but it does feel markedly less painful. Simply amazing. I’m hooked on comfrey for injuries. Thank you Billy. I appreciate being in less pain and it is because of you and this channel. Job well done !!!!

Billy! I so enjoy your knowledge! I can’t tell you how much I learn from you with each video. I went to Centerville, Texas to visit a friend. His property has tons of Mimosas and Mulberry trees. I took cuttings from both. I have 40 cuttings of Mimosas and 12 cuttings of Mulberries. If half of them “root” I’ll have enough for me AND my friend who is setting up their own “stead.” I’m hoping that the next time ya’ll make a trip to visit Granny, my family will have an opportunity to feed ya’ll a good meal. It’s the least we can do as recompense for what you have given us. May Yah continue to guide you and bless you!

If you have a short union point, you can plant them deeper and potentially get the grafted part to root out or grow low branches. If you get the low branches then you can turn what would be a tall tree into a bush so you don't need a ladder to harvest fruit in the future. This was a fortunate accident in my case and how I figured it out.

3 years ago I bought a apricot tree in a 40 gallon pot at a nursery. The man that owned the nursery said how deep to plant the tree. The tree grows lots of those saplings off the trunk and I have to cut them off every 2 months. The apricot tree does have lots of fruit production and the apricots taste great.

When you emphasize that y'all use methods of about 7or 8 different people to help you figure out what's going to work best at your place it sometimesakes me think of how Bruce Lee took all of the things that he liked in other disaplines of fighting and melded them all together to make up his own type of marshal art. I've said it about many things, but started with telling them to be aware of their surroundings when walking into dark parking lots. People with bad intentions will usually go for the easiest targets instead of going after someone who's paying attention to what and who is around them.

Great info! Please, what is your spacing from locust to apple? It looks like only a few feet and is that possible due to coppicing the locust to allow the apple to dominate the sun intake? We planted our monoculture spot with 20' spacing earlier this year and not digging up trees would be great!

@kaybell1501
@kaybell1501 2 года назад
The sucker might grow into a tree but you will have no idea what you are getting as it is from the rootstock not what is grafted on top. Rootstock can be a different variety than the grafted part. If you have room it might be fun to try growing one and see what you get. A child I lived in front of a nursery and one of their nuserymen grafted 4 different apple varieties on to one rootstock when he retired he gave the tree to my mother who planted it in her orchard and it is still growing. Hope this helps.
