It’s even less value now that the same boxset is being used for Spearhead. What’s always amazed me about AOS / 40K fans is how they say “that boxset is great value because it’s $50 off” but they never stop to think their plastic sprue was very overpriced to begin with. It’s a great marketing trick by GW.
The box in Aus is... weird. The price took a huge leap, $205 vs the typical $160-180, but then the actual kits themselves took a monster leap and many that I know who were considering them have since backed right off, they want $110 for the knights and $105 for the warriors, so by that comparison the vanguard box is still a 'good deal', even though for many, breaching the $100 mark for regular troops is causing many to go cold turkey. On the other hand, if you manage to get the previous start collecting, you get both the knights and warriors, and it was $165, if you keep an eye out or search swap and sells, seems you can still get it for same or cheaper here, picked mine up for $120 about two weeks ago. Just seems the vanguard box is only decent if considering what's *currently available*
@@richardgonzalez9773 actually where I get the few things I do but directly. Pretty reliable. Still, doesn't excuse the absurd prices GW are throwing out there
I ended up pre ordering the vanguard and lord on mount. I already bought the new army box set and 5 chaos knights, so my purchases round out the essentials I need (minus the chariot)
Got the Army box (still available online for $170) and Vanguard box (sold the chariot). Then completed just under 2k (1960) with a Chaos Sorcerer on Manticore, a box of Varanguard, and a single Endless Spell.
I think im going to get the vanguard kit i have the new start collecting and launch set so i could use more warriors and knights. I already have a chariot someone at my local shop gave me so an extra 15 bucks for the chaos lord sound pretty worth.
Sounds like a great plan! I forgot to mention the new battletome has an option to run chariots as a unit of 3 so you'd be one closer to that if you're at all interested.
I pre-ordered the Vanguard kit, then cancelled my pre-order and ordered the Warriors and Knights separately. If I didn't already own the Lord on foot I'd have stuck with the Vanguard box, but I can't see myself wanting two of him, and I don't like the Chariot at all. Sure, I could probably have sold the Lord and Chariot for enough on eBay to have made it cheaper, but I imagine eBay will be swamped with those kits for a while and prices will be incredibly low, so I didn't want to take that risk.
Yeah I think it's a pretty awesome kit if you're sure you want everything included. Particularly if you don't already have the battletome. Like @LeonElJohnson mentioned it's not a full army but you could build into one, chosen are a battleline option in Host of the Everchose which looks to be one of the stronger options at a glance
Maybe if I pick up 40k some day (I have been tempted by the newer models and the lore) but for now I'm planning to continue to focus on AoS (and to a lesser degree AoS spin offs)--currently I only have the time for one game unfortunately (and still a lot of grey orcs in my pile of shame haha)
