Yamaha’s new 850cc class, parallel twin cylinder UTV engine promises the possibility of a new Grizzly 850 ATV
There was a time when the thought of a 700cc ATV was mind blowing. Today, there are ride-on ATV models with displacement in the 1000cc range. In 2016 Yamaha released a totally redesigned Grizzly 700 resulting in an overall improved machine with new styling, improved handling, suspension, and ergonomics. The new 708cc engine enjoyed a 6% more power and 9% more torque than the 686cc engine it replaced. While its performance was mildly improved, based on your comments, there was definitely a group of enthusiasts out there wishing that Yamaha would produce a higher displacement, higher horsepower, twin-cylinder engine to challenge the twins from Polaris and Can-Am twins.
Conclusion
We think the extra power and rev-ability of Yamaha’s new 850 twin could take the Grizzly 700’s fun factor to the next level. It could also be used to power an all new sport 4x4 ATV. Let us know if you’d like to see a new Grizzly 850 in the comments. We’re pretty sure Yamaha is paying attention.

Man if Yamaha had an 850 I'd be at the dealer yesterday. I love, love, love the reliability of Yamaha but it's getting harder and harder to be brand loyal when the competition comes out with innovative styling and horsepower!

kicktotheliver same I'll trade in my sportsman 850 immediately next season if this comes out. I want a twin grizzly so bad lol. Nothing against Polaris tho it's been pretty good atv definitely a nice ride and power. Fit and finish could be better. No major problems. But I'm Yamaha fan from the beginning

Yeah but innovation doesn’t mean anything when it spends more time in the shop. I hate Polaris because they are built like garbage. I sold my 1000 Sportsman to go back to a Yamaha because I got sick of being ripped off by Polaris.

I hope so. Would regain a lot of business, as well as give them the cool factor they once had. Release a Grizzly r-spec 850 as well as sport-utility model with that X4 grill on a grizzly chassis, hack the plastics and racks back for the sporty look, throw so fox shocks on, and call it a Banshee. Would sell piles of them. If you watch UTVScenes vid on the X4 he speaks to Yamaha's Lead ATV/UTV product planner and says the motor will be in other applications. Just a matter of time.

Brett Ster I doubt that Honda ever will. Honda has gone the work/utility route for years but Yamaha.... there's still hope for Yamaha and they build a great machine, it's just under powered and can't keep up to Canam or Polaris. Yamaha's are engineered better and are way less prone to breakdowns. Let's face it.... Canam has their heads up their ass when it comes to clutching.

Yamaha has lost a ton of customers and money because they wont simply listen to there customers or they just dont know the market as well has the others. My first atv was a yamaha and I wanted to move up and I didnt want another single, if yamaha had one back in 07 I would have bought one but nope they still today do not have a twin so I said goodbye to yamaha and now I am a Kawasaki and Can am fan.

Ca mon now. Yamaha kept the banshee around for like ten extra years due to customer demand. Now they build the yxz1000 sxs that so totally fuckin cool. The grizzly and Kodiak are the most reliable bikes on the trail. And they still make the yz85 yz125 yz250 now a new yz250x and holy shit.... a yz65. Yamaha hasnt made a 65 class yz since 1980.....yz60. Yamaha is just very careful not to produce junk like polaris puts out.

I'm a Yamaha fan on my third Yamaha atv. I have a 2016 Grizzly that has all it can do to outrun a Sportsman 570.. for that reason I've been starting to check out Polaris and CanAm. If Yamaha doesn't put this 850 in a Grizzly soon my next machine will most likely not be a Yamaha.

@tythomps

For the sake of those that have really been wanting this, I really hope I'm wrong...but I don’t think this exact 847 twin is ever going into a Grizzly. And I believe so because the specific layout they used doesn’t lend itself to be narrow enough to go below the rider on a Grizzly. I already feel my Grizz 450 is as wide as anyone would want it to be under their feet, with the stator side protruding some over the left floorboard, and the ultramatic primary cover protruding quite a bit over the right floorboard already. Both Can-Am and Arctic Cat (Textron) fit their 1000’s in by going with a V-twin layout, so they are really no wider than a single cylinder 500. And Polaris fit their 1000 twin in by going with a parallel twin, but they kept the cylinders (mostly) upright, and turned the entire engine and CVT 90 degrees so that the CVT is behind the engine. Think of it like an old straight six pickup, sort of. But Yamaha made this twin a parallel twin, so it’s wider than a V-twin. But they kept the CVT to the side, instead of turning it like Polaris. Like I said, I hope they prove me wrong. But if a big twin Grizzly ever comes out, my money is on it using a similar displacement and sharing some of the internal engine parts, but requiring a massive reconfiguration from what they put in the X4 in order to fit it into a Grizzly.

Yamaha MOST definitely needs a large twin. No doubt about it.The 1000cc twins are somewhat extreme for the average guy looking for more power. An 850 twin seems Perfect. Much Much more motor than the 700 single yet not over the top like the 1000s. I know most guys will cry that it should be a 1000 but again the average user will fit into the 850 just right. Thanking you in advance Yamaha.

I'm in. Everything I own is Yamaha and has been for nearly 50 years. Old snowmobiles, two stroke to four stroke outboard motors, riding hydrostatic lawn mowers, generator/inverter. trash pump, and my current Kodiak 700 SE. I'm probably forgetting something. I wish they made a ~60cc chainsaw. I really don't have use for a UTV. But if Yamaha put that 850 into an ATV - I'm in!

Please do. I love the Polaris ride. The Yamaha has only been second due to older tech and lack of power. The reliability is there but why spend the same for a 700 single that is just good at everything when I can get something that has better performance and more comfortable. I will spend a little extra on maintenance and parts when comparing (Grizzly vs Polaris Sportsman 850 SP) when the upfront costs are about the same. These have been my top 2 over the years even with some of the recalls and hiccups.

In order for yamaha to stay competitive as a pinnacle brand in the atv world. I don't see them having much choice! Why not take the opportunity to stretch their engineering muscle to design a completely new platform. Something no one has. They must have saved a ton of $$$ with the sharing of the 708cc among current platforms. Spend some of it on some radical r&d. I for one will be watching. Cheque book on hand!

I'm currently waiting to see what 2019 models come out. I had a 2011 Grizzly 700 with power steering and long story short it was stolen from me in a crazy way when I went out of town for a wedding back in 2014. I probably would've already bought one but I'm waiting to see what Yamaha brings to the table and also hoping Honda has some surprises. I keep hearing they are going to update/bring out a new model to replace the Rincon 680. When do you expect Yamaha/Honda to announce their 2019 models?

The 850 looks good on paper however, every cc needs its own share of gas. There are few gas pumps in the Rocky Mountains, and hauling several gas cans around reduces other gear that is needed 30 or so miles from a gas pump. I have a 2016 700 SE that has more than enough power to haul my happy rump anywhere I want to go.

Yamaha, please put this motor into the 2019 Viking VI!! That is the one UTV in your lineup that desperately needs more power. What were you thinking dropping a 686cc single cylinder in a 6 seat behemoth like the Viking in the first place?? I'm currently looking at buying one to hit some trails with my family, but the weak power output is pushing me toward buying a Mule, or Ranger instead..

We need a 850. I have had 2 grizzlys and they are slow. Would like to have a twin 850. Starting to look at a Can Am

The only thing I would sell my king quad 750 for is a twin cylinder Yamaha. This needs to happen

I'm currently on a Honda Rincon. Aside from Kawasaki, which ever Japanese company puts out a twin engine ATV first will be my next ATV purchase. I was hoping for a Honda Twincon but I think Honda is gun shy ever since the 250 three-wheeler days.

I was looking real hard at the 2017/2018 700 grizzly's, but even though they are pretty upgraded over my 2007 700 grizzly special edition, they just aren't enough upgraded over it to get me to plunk down the cash for the upgrade, but if in the next year or 2 Yamaha puts the 850 twin into the Grizzly I will be plunking down the cash, I've been waiting for a few years now for Yamaha to get into a larger twin, they just have power a smoothness a big single just can't match, so come on Yamaha get it built you got one sold here.

Yup I'd buy one. Honda also needs to put the transalp engine in the Rincon
