I've never really gotten with the New Year, New Me thing. Time is a wobbly-wobbly thing so one full orbit of the sun happens every day. We just decided January 1 was when we started counting. But if everyone is gonna make a big deal about it, I guess it's worth thinking about a little. Especially when our kids are seeing the same big deals being made around them. Here's how I approach New Year's resolutions and visions for the future with my kids.

This childless 72 year old (not by choice😓) is absolutely sharing your videos. Will be sending your book to my niece who has 12 year old and 18 mo old daughters. She's a very cool mom and also my "soul sister" and confidant. Thanks for being you and sharing your experiences and wisdoms. The world is a better world with you in it. Be well and you and yours stay safe. Thank you for reading and liking my comment! Bless y'all for lifting me up after a difficult New Year. Remember...#bekind

for me, i've started doing "resolutions" that are more like fun sidequests for my life. this year i've decided to expand my taste in food. the main goal is to make 2 new recipes every month, with side goals of "taste new foods every time someone offers them to you" and "try to pick up one thing you've not tried before or have not tried in many years at the grocery store when your budget allows for it." i started this resolution on my birthday instead of new years, and in these past few months i have learned new lessons like "liver is nasty, no matter how good my neighbors are at cooking it", "french onion soup is delicious and also fun to cook", and "there are so many delicious cheeses out there"

Oooo! I'm just checking out the channel, and I love this idea! Was just thinking how unfun adult birthdays are (not dissing friends, just always having things due or reminders pop up on your birthday. It's like we're being punished for being born😵‍💫). Maybe not a resolution for me, but a side quest sounds fun! Thanks for the idea! Since we're on the topic, I picked up a great idea from someone else. If you have a pet- set up treat filled Easter eggs! Send them on a fun hunt🤗 You know, if you have a pet. Just wanna pay you back with another great idea👍

I was supposed to deliver a baby in February. A new version of me is inevitable. I worked hard to make healthy choices during my pregnancy and slowly put on pregnancy weight. I still developed preeclampsia and had to give birth early. My body is doing a great job of letting go of the extra weight, and I am almost back to my pre pregnancy weight. I'm excited about my milk supply and how it's burning extra calories for me, and I am moving around more working to care for my baby while resting my body for recovery.

for me, writing myself/future me a letter looking back on the year is a new years eve ritual. i do write "resolutions"/goals at the end, but not with the intention to do something purely because it's a new year. these are usually things i'm already doing or was about to do regardless of the time of the year, i just like documenting it so later on i can look back and see what was important to me at that point in my life.

Gwenna, Thank you so much. It's awesome having someone who shows the how and why and explains them both, too. I wish you had been around, as someone we could see modeling the skills when my children and their friends were young and then when I was teaching in a large metropolitan school district. I would have loved to show your videos to some parents, staff, and children who had already decided/learned (?) that anyone who asked them to do something they didn't want to do was picking on them, hated them, or was otherwise specifically singling them out for negative treatment. (You know, when you ask them to do really unreasonable things such as pick up the bottle of glue they knocked on the floor or to please move their attendance apple to "here" and to either sack or school lunch. Yep, truly spiteful things like that.) smh

Instead of resolutions, I recommend choosing a couple of things that will be your focus this year. Those foci then will inform your actions throughout the year - they tell you what to make time for and what to deprioritize. I haven't resolved to make X number of pieces of art this year, but I have made art an area of special focus. That means I've got active projects ready and available to work on without much setup. It means that when I have a spare moment, I'm at the easel instead of scrolling online. Its about being intentional with your time - as I get older I see more and more that I can't just *find* time, I have to *make* it. And I'm doing it because it brings me joy, not out of a sense of guilt. Your area of focus might just be something you enjoy, but you can also use the technique for more goal-oriented things. If you resolve to run a 10k or to lose twenty pounds, you've given yourself a binary pass/fail framework - in my experience that's a recipe for failure even before you begin. Instead, you might chose to focus on your health this year - that might look like intentionally chosing healthier food or finding an exercise or sport that you enjoy. That intrinsic enjoyment is key - there is joy in moving your body, as well as the extra lift that a healthy body gives you throughout your day. If you end up running that 10k, great - but that was never the goal. Its all mental gymnastics, of course, but I find it very satisfying to look back and see what paths my foci have taken me on and the progress that I made. And I don't need to worry about guilt over "failing" a self-imposed goal. Personally I recommend no more than 3 foci for a year, and they should each provide a different type of stimulation or reward. That way you're not grinding down the same spoon reservoir every day.

LOVE using resolutions to add things. My current goal is 'To be Strong, so I can wrestle Bear in the Woods'. Yes, it's based off a tiktok. I don't care, I've punched the CRAP out of a bag today and though my shoulders throb in angry vengence, I have never felt more like a freaking super hero.

This. This is what I need. For years I have been trying to get from point A to point Z to get things accomplished…and every year, I get Absolutely Nothing accomplished, Nothing. I need to get from point A to point Z…but I need to not only figure out the letters in between, but the general order they go in…I know I need to accomplish things, but I Really need to know How to even figure out How to get there. I know the goals, I know some steps, but I need to sit down and map out the very basic basic first steps otherwise I get overwhelmed and nothing gets done 😂😂

As an adult, I’ve never made a Resolution at New Years because my birthday was yesterday. I want to go out, have drinks with friends, have a nice meal with my fella, maybe simply chill out for the day, get a takeaway and catch up on films. Besides, January is the darkest, and usually grottiest, month of the year here in the U.K. It’s not the month to swap potatoes for salads, or start running, swimming or walking at 6am before work or 8pm after. Honestly, imitating a tortoise wrapped in my duvet with a coffee is much more preferable, until the very last alarm goes off, before the dogs pounce on me for breakfast, is the only way I can deal with January. I love the idea of looking at changes as adding to life. A couple of years ago I added healthier meals to help with my fibro. That’s worked really well for me mentally. So once January is done (because I’m serious about hibernating) I’m going to add more walks to my life. But instead of just going for the same old walk around the same little woods, I’m going to go to places that I enjoy more or that I’ve never explored. Even if it’s just one different walk a week it will be more pleasant. One of my friends was getting nagged by their dr to walk more. This person hates walking in nature. They do love shopping though. They were bought a fit watch by their kid & after a shopping trip they realised they had walked nearly 2 miles. Just a tip for the people who feel the same way as my friend or can’t get out in nature during the winter. ❤

Thankyou for this. It reinforces what I have thought for a long time, now. I have always found that I keep resolutions I make in, say, mid-November or three quarters of the way through June, than anything I resolve at New Years. I think, mostly, it's because New Year's resolutions are based on a transient enotional high before the non-holidays kick in and I'm entrenched in the day to day trudgery (yes, trudgery as opposed to drudgery) of paying bills, buying groceries, cleaning the apartment and so on. I no longer have smalls. My children are in their mid-20's and I've always tried to give them this advice. It works really well. They have grown into two very amazing people who are far more capable and wise than I ever was at their age.

I decided on a realistic goal to work on about the time the year was ending. I am working on negative self-talk. Positive affirmations are beyond me, but trying to gentle parenting my own inner voices (yes, voices) is working. I'm trying to accept that I over explain things to myself, am (quietly, to myself) nosy and judgemental, and a host of other things. It's exhausting, being in my own head sometimes. But part of that might be fighting against myself. So, I'm just trying to accept myself this year.

Amen! I’ll be turning 54 in just a few weeks. For years people have been calling me weird because my New Year’s resolution is the same each year: not to make and not to stick to a New Year’s resolution. Instead I simply do what I can every day. Some days that are “Two hands and one head with limited grey cells people!” days it can be as simple as getting my teeth brushed, my hair somewhat untangled and calories inside everyone inside the house without causing grievous bodily harm and/or trauma to everyone. Some days people get tired at the very thought of even half of what I got done. Most days are somewhere in between. And any of the above are okay. I don’t do vision boards but do have a definite idea of what I more or less want out of the year. So does my daughter. Last year it more or less amounted to surviving my spinal surgery and healing as best I could, and retaining a good relationship with my daughter whilst doing so because I know I’m a terrible patient. The goal in itself was completely detached from the new number on the calendar. Surgery just happened to be in January. My daughter’s goal ended up being finishing High School, figuring out what she wanted to study at university, enrolling and staying sane in the process because she knew her autism was going to make both the choosing and the adjustment to university tough. The why and how, even the goals themselves kind of developed step by step. We both find simply sticking to the very next immediate step, moving to a “and now what?” frame of mind as we move towards that next step and finally looking back every now and again at what we succeeded at much more helpful. Looking at what didn’t work gets us blocked and feeling like a failure. Looking at what worked and the road traveled to achieve that helps us to keep on track and with a little stash of successes, helps us look at the stuff that didn’t work, figure out why, and learn from it without going into an unproductive funk.

My New Year's resolution for 2010 was to not be afraid to try new things. That lead to me becoming unafraid to try (most) things once. Obviously, I don't try illegal or immoral things. But, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and that resolution helped me with that. 14 years later, that resolution is still going strong!

I think we all do self check ins throughout the year. I dont really do new year new me. If i discover a issue within myself i process it and come up with steps to be better. Like weight loss. Its not about just weight its all the little things that add to me being unhappy, insecure, non active so i make adjustments in my daily life to address those things.

Your video just popped up and I had to listen ☺️ You're so fun and cute! (I hope that's not one of those things you hate. Like someone thought it was a compliment to call me J-Lo, which it wasn't... So hope you take that as a real compliment 😉) Maybe this would be a good place to confess a New Year's meanness. I have to walk my dog early, and long walks. Of course every year weirdos come outta nowhere just to disappear again. End of hour two, suddenly 8 people are running me over. And I got stuck crossing an intersection with them. It was bad enough worrying about impatient bad drivers. I thought I was in the clear, then get run over by a straggler ☹️ While they were building their selves up at the corner, and as this straggler ran me over startling me & my dog, I said out loud "I HATE New Year's!" Aaaaand, I haven't seen them since😵‍💫😐😂🤭🤭🤭 Thank you for letting me confess, and I'm sorry I did that. Sorry I'm weird 🤪🤡😜

I swore off resolutions before I graduated HS (1996 BTW), but I do give myself reasonable goals that are within my ability. Of course these changed each year. Sometimes I accomplished them or just some of them, but I did feel like I accomplished something. 10 years ago I had a massive stroke in Aug 2013. It took me 2.5 years, but I accomplished my biggest goal up to that point: Live independently w/o a home nurse or aid. Yes, I'm now in wheelchair but I now living on my own. Only now I've come to realize that I do need some help cos I'm struggling & I am 10 years older now too (46). So this year's goal is to get a Home Health Aid. Well that's just 1 of them anyway. This year I had to learn acceptance in that I can't do everything I once was able to do. My right side weakness & getting older kinda prevents total independence, but I need to accept the help. Sometimes these goals have life lessons within them too.

I know I can't hate myself into improvement but I can't stop hating myself I'm trying so hard for my daughter and feel like I'm failing at it everyday which makes it worse 😢

"You cannot hate yourself into improving" The government does it maybe not your parents. But most parents do my parents did it. And it seems to get me where I want to go. I'm not a blue haired Soft parenting Person who thinks that her daughter is going to actually achieve anything in her life. Because I'm soft on her. She's born special raised. Special more or less We'll end up serving fries and a shake fluorescent for the rest of her life.

I have huzzah'd, I confess. I think it's just the faint hope that a change is a good thing.... I do not resolve....

Maybe its because you aren't a Nordic Pagan desperate for winter to end. Last year I wanted to read 50 books as the year before was 40. Last year I got 62 books so this year is 65 books.

Learn about pagan holidays and you’ll understand all of them. Most holidays were stolen from the pagans and warped into the marketing crap we have now.

Satan has manipulated "society" into creating an environment of self-loathing... If a person can't love themselves and don't even know what love is, how can they love their neighbors or enemies as Jesus instructed 2,000 years ago? They can't, and Satan wins souls... I admire people who put love out into the world.
