Which Sippy Cup Sucks? (And Which Ones Don't...)

Switching from bottles to sippy cups is a milestone. But for all the effort you put into selecting a bottle (if you even used one...) now you have to find a sippy that works, is durable, is easy to use and clean, and will withstand the physics-defying force of your toddler. Welcome to Mom Reviews. The laziest series title ever but probably the most important videos this channel will ever make. This is episode one of Sippy Cups!
If this episode proved to you which sippy you want to purchase, click the link in the lower left corner of the video to purchase. I may earn commission from that. So that's kinda neat. Thanks for your support!
Didn't see the sippy you use or are curious about? Don't worry. There are more episodes dedidcated to sippies. Maybe yours will appear in a future episode. Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss it!
Don't forget to pre-order Momma Cusses: A Field Guide to Responsive Parenting and Trying Not To Be the Reason Your Kids Need Therapy by Gwenna Laithland. It hits the bookshelves (and hopefully your mailbox or inbox) on March 5th.

We used nubys for my grandson and let me tell you they leaked! He would only use one and if you bought the exact same one he would know the difference and not use it. My couch and carpet had chocolate milk stains all over it! ( don’t judge the chocolate milk thing) I am soooooo glad he’s 7 now and we no longer have to worry about those darn sippys. Thank you for doing this I for one appreciated all the effort you did testing these out you were thorough and I’m sure it will help those at the sippy stage. Much love and many blessings everyone

Yes! What makes nubby so great is that they are cheaper than dirt and they are easy to switch to. At least my kids seemed to think so. When they get lost and gross, you just toss it. Not the end of the world. My kids were drink hoarders. They wanted both milk and water or juice at all times. They liked their options i guess. 😂❤

There is one more thing to consider, the frustration factor, will your toddler need the suction of a hoover to score a drink. We bought several cups that we had to purposely damage the anti-leak vent before even an adult could get a drink from them! Also if you are unfortunate enough to live in a sick building I suggest skipping sippies and getting stainless steal tumblers, every plastic or silicone cup eventually started souring milk in under an hour. Yes we are trying to move, but shits expensive and badly housed beats unhoused.

I've seen all of those get broken by cousins, nieces, nephews and friends children. I went with cheap brands for my kids because of that. I already knew that no sippy cup is indestructible therefore I wasn't paying a mint for something we only used for travel, Drs offices and such. I opted to just give them drinks from regular glasses the rest of the time, yes I held the cup/glass till they had good enough control to drink on their own without spillage being a definite. That worked well for my family but I know people who tried doing it our way and it just didn't work for their families. That's ok. Not every method works for everyone so just try stuff till you find the best fit for your family. Love this channel & your content!

That’s what my parents did with me. I also wasn’t allowed to lug the sippy cup around when we were somewhere, I had to sit down, drink and give the cup back. I’m a bit confused by all this. 😂
@brandygiovinazzi3460
@brandygiovinazzi3460 5 месяцев назад
@@glockenrein most of the people I know either didn't have the time or patience involved to do this or they just weren't in a family dynamic in which the kids would stand/sit still while drinking. Others had kids who took longer to gain the eye hand coordination to allow them to drink solo. I also know several who's children were just so used to holding their bottle and turning it upside down that they refused to drink any other way so the parents had to go with sippies until there kids were willing to learn regular cup use cause they didn't want to deal with the tantrums their kids had. I started mine taking sips from my drinks by the time they were 6 months old so it was normal to them that a cup doesn't work like a bottle or sippy. They loved getting drinks from Mommy's cups/glasses and that just made the process easier for me and them. LOL! Since I don't drink backwash I lost a lot of drinks till they learned to drink without backwashing but I feel it was worth the loss of those drinks. More for them. 😂😂😂😂😂

@@brandygiovinazzi3460 that was probably a very smart strategy on your part - at least for your kids, not so much for your own hydration. 😂 And really every family needs to do what’s best for them, I just hadn’t realised the whole world of sippy cups was that complicated. We used the Munchkin 360s. They definitely wouldn't have passed the drop and throw tests, I know from experience, but they would have largely passed the shake test and because they don't have a spout, it took longer for the chewing to be a problem. The silicone lids wore out and so leaks became a bigger deal we had each cup. BUT. The action cup part, not the lid, held up super well, and my kids transitioned to an actually cup pretty well. Those cups just became our kids cups. Literally. My 7 and 5 year old drink out of their sippy cup cups, without the lids. They just look like normal, colorful cups. So having to buy new ones left us with a really nice supply if kids cups.

I just use the $1 Parents Choice cups from Walmart. They get lost too easily to justify buying more expensive cups. My granddaughter goes back and forth between us, her mom's, and her dads so she's in 3 primary vehicles and 3 different homes. The $1 Walmart cups don't leak unless you really try hard to make it leak. They are also easier to clean than any of the more expensive cups we've tried. I'm actually very impressed with the quality, durability, and leak proofness of these super cheap cups! 🙂🙂🙂 Edit: Now that I've seen the whole video, I'll add a couple details. The cheap cups I use have 3 pieces. The plastic lid is one piece and because it's hard plastic, the chew test would have been won by this cup by a landslide had it been tested. So you have the cup, the lid, and the silicone insert, which is installed on the bottom of the lid, inside the cup, which protects it from chewing. Cleaning everything is easy enough and I dry it mostly with a towel but then use Q-tips to get the tight spaces. Very easy.

When I was a mother, now this goes back in early 2000's and we had Avent bottles and sippy, bottles that can turn into a sippy cup, although, my child would throw them as hard as you did and it would bounce. Sometimes I had to invest in a new one because it wouldn't keep it's seal anymore and it would last a lifetime. Also, they had parts for it. So you can just replace the nipple without replacing the whole thing.

Hey I wanted to mention a tip I use for laundry for whenever I've forgotten about it for a while and it starts to smell like mildew. I put it on for another wash with a 1/2 cup of white vinegar in it (or less if it's not a full load) instead of another bit of detergent. It helps your clothes and prevents more detergent layering your clothes and removes the mildew smell and still brings out clean clothes. Hope this helps and love your content. Sorry this is a little random it came into my head right now that I forgot to mention it months ago.

We use the fancy Nuby and a couple you didn't review, the munchkin 360, munchkin weighted straw cup, and first years training cup. All leak under different circumstances. It feels impossible to get them really clean, with the little vents and spouts and rims that no brush fit into.

Yes!! I've been needing this type of review. Why are there so many bad sippy cups???

We used mostly munchkins brand sippy cups when our children were toddlers. As soon as we could switch them to water bottles, we fell in love with the Yeti kids water bottles. We bought two for each kid, and they are at least 3 years old with very few signs of wear, even though our kids are ROUGH with those water bottles.

Love the video. I would've loved if you hit on cleaning a bit more in detail. So not just ease of breakdown and reassembly but also additional items you would need to purchase to completly clean those parts. Like straw cleaners. I got a set from munchkin for the different areas of the cup that would need to be cleaned. Especially if you don't rinse the cup right after they finish using it

Yep. I’ll cover that with the straw cups.

We use a tealight candle holder glass (Plain glass, very very well cleaned. Literally just glass) or a shot glass for babies/toddlers at meal times for cup-practice, and use a 360* style cup for them to use around the house outside of meal time. They are super easy to take apart and get into all the parts (No dish-washer). And still works well to teach cup skills. My youngest has has been using a bamboo cup/beaker thing since he was 2, sippy for travel. And ONLY water or water-based juice. 😱 😂 I hate sippy cups. 😂 Pregnant with #4 now after nearly 4 years gap between them and my youngest (My older 3 kids have 18 months between each of them) and I am DREADING going back to this stage!!

I love the green Tommee tippee sportee cup! Been going strong for a few months now. As long as the plastic and silicon piece are secure inside the lid it is good to go….through hell and back 😂

I have a Tommy Tippy that I bought my youngest son in 1997. I of course saved it for no particular reason. When my grandkids started arriving, I pulled out my sippy cups. The one that worked the best was the good old Tommy Tippy. My grandson went through a phase where he only wanted that old cup. We had a basket for small parts in our dishwasher and we managed to hang on to all of the pieces.

I loved the Playtex "Coolster" cups for my older three. And totally went cheap for the younger two with the Nuby and munchkin cups. Also not going to lie, the character top juice cups... totally win win. I washed and used them. Then didn't feel bad about tossing them. Thankfully my kids are old enough to use regular cups and water bottles. Now there's another idea... same science test but for the big "adult" bottles. My 12 year old broke a camelbak and didn't know how.

So funny cuz I have been using those Munchkin ones for my toddler from the beginning, and just recently added the tommee tippee for water to take to bed because it doesn't leak at all lol.

Wow, if the tommee could damage your head imagine one toddler throwing it at another. Ouch. Plus for me, with migraine, would not want to risk having to hear that sucker hit the floor.

my two year old loves his Tomee tippee.. :) getting the filter out is easier if you use your thumb to like flick it out on the long white bit :) he has 2 one for milk and one for clear liquids. it survived the dishwasher :) I Laughed soooo hard when you threw it at the shed and it made the hole lol I am glad my toddler hasn't worked out he can ditch his yet :) Love these videos. you make me smile and laugh :D
