New Year's Eve is a tradition that brings us into the new year. But what do we really know about it when we celebrate New Year's Eve? In this episode I will tell you a little about it.
We don't often think about the origins of the holidays we simply celebrate. Maybe because tradition and customs tell us to do so.
In this video, I will tell you how far back in time the origins of New Year's Eve, celebrated literally all over the world, go. More or less grand and celebrated in various ways. What unites us in this is certainly the date that ends the old year and begins the new one.
Therefore, Sylvester has its roots in Ancient Rome and is closely associated with the Deity known only to the Romans, i.e. Janus. The deity never gained much popularity outside Italy, although on that peninsula it was very important at that time, as I remind you in this film. It had almost countless attributes and considerable authority. Next, we will move to the times of the birth of Christianity. We are dealing there with one of the first Popes named Sylvester, whose date of death was effectively used to promote the holiday of a new religion that was gaining popularity. There are also prophecies from the turn of the millennium and legends that also tried to explain the celebration of this holiday.
Finally, we will get closer to more modern times. But even then, old customs and symbols, such as the eternal fire, still found their use on this extraordinary day ending each old year.
I hope that once again I have made the story a little closer to everyone watching and listening. It is important to remember where it all came from, because it is our common European heritage.
