New Zealand has 100,000 empty houses, while also having 100,000 homeless. We explore how that is, and the effect it is having on New Zealanders struggling with housing.

“When I think of homes standing empty, I think of the people I know that are suffering. I think of the people I know that are sleeping on the street tonight. I think of the over twenty people who got referred here in the last few weeks, and that I had to look at their names, read their story and recognise that I had to reject all of them - because we don’t have anywhere for them to go.”

Those houses have been sold, who ever owns them want to capitalize on them. majority of owners are from other countries is the reason why the houses are empty, they don't even have be in NZ to sell them. online and telephone auctions.

Agree for sure but so many stories in different ways the government can be using the re form method for no to low wage or income ppl also homelessness & addict's so it can make changes to the future of NZ economy. Due to our circumstances we are unable to use our transfered super from Australia with a substantial amount and small NZ $ deposit to get into our first buy home in NZ due to not enough in Kiwisaver & deposit also unable to use transfer AU super funds but the NZ Government procedures has made it hard & with paying rent in NZ & its very high for a decent home to comfortably live in as it would be considered dead rent when it could be paying a mortgage.

Housing is a product created by the bankers. So is currency and the fractional reserve system. The system that said the banks had to hold 10% of your money they lent out to others at interest. Now it's 0%. It's also not based in any real value and is printed at will. But you have to borrow and pay interest. And then aaaaaall the taxes. And the hidden tax called inflation. So if we move people who are homeless to the Coromandel, then where are the job opportunities? Where are the support services? That region's population is only 1700 and you'd quadruple it in one go, with no support services and no opportunities for people to grow. Same problem in Auckland, most of their 17,000 empty homes are in Waiheke, the Great Barrier Island and Karekare. Reducing people who are homeless' issues down to "they just need a house, so therefore we find them house" is a reductionist and responsibility-absolving take.

I wonder if these empty houses are livible but can have defects such as a bit of mold or not quite warm enough and landlords are scared to rent out these homes for a fair price but scared to get a lazy tenant that lets a bit of mold spread not clean make the place even colder and damper over a period of 2 and a half years then goto tenacity tribunal claim that entire two and half years rent back from a fair tenant and add health costs because they were sick at the beginning of moving in but clain health costs onto that tenant and return him a dirty filthy mess of a house back to him and suck eggs on the rent to bro. Ive seen filthy tenants do this its like that tenant just felt entitled to screw that decent fair land lord left right n center, ive also seen stingy landlords to who deserve the house they rented to be condemned. The government has the power to acquire all brownfield and land bank land using Para 16.1 Part 2 of Public Works Act and to partner with property developers to build new 'rent only' and 'rent to own' housing using manufactured prefabricated construction. I can't think of a clearer international example of a failure of government to build low cost housing than the current government. Now into it's second term. And I happen to know something about the subject on an international scale since 1974. The problem is not the existence of the private sector. Not at all. The problem in NZ is a very simple problem to solve but there it a lack of political will. For just one example, Auckland Isthmus. Auckland Isthmus has at least 5 eighteen hole golf courses. 2 are council owned. Waikumete Cemetery is 108 hectares. One third of the private property in the Auckland Isthmus can not be built up in order to protect the view these wealthy properties enjoy - called viewshafts. These are all ridiculously wasteful uses of space. It is ludicrous. They combine with other factors to make Auckland Isthmus property extremely expensive. Which has a flow on effect on prices for the rest of Auckland. Which has a flow on effect all the way down the chain. All this is totally unnecessary and very easily resolved at minimum cost to government. It could all be fixed with a stroke of the pen. That is just one example. New Zealand doesn't have a housing problem. It doesn't have a private sector problem. It has an intelligence problem. What is lacking is the political will. Mostly due to the people's ignorance of what these ridiculous polices end up costing the average person. It's much better for Labour politicians sitting in their Auckland Isthmus homes to tell their voters that it is the fault of the evil landlords. And their voters lap it all up. You think Adern in her Sandringham home (close to Helen Clark's similar Mt Eden home) is going to tell you there is something wrong with her north facing single dwelling on a 643m2 block. Noooo. No. The problem is the big bad private sector. Coz,...... feelings.

Your typical landlord will not complain very loudly. They simply leave it empty. The government has made it uneconomical to rent the house out until it can be knocked down. So the landlord just leaves it empty. Which means the landlord is not getting income. Which means it will be even more years before they can afford to knock down and build new. Ask yourself; If it is so easy to buy and old home and keep it up to standard then why are people renting?

@DavesShed 2 года назад
@@aperaruapeeta4309 Having been homeless and below the poverty line more than once in my life I think I'm qualified to answer this. Yes an individual should be allowed to own more than two homes. If not, then there would be few houses available for rent and those that were available would be owned by corporations. The problem is not mum and dad investing in housing. The problem is a lack of supply. Which is easily fixed by removing restrictions. For example, there are five 18 hole golf courses on Auckland Isthmus. There is a cemetery which takes up 108 hectares. One third of the private property is not allowed to build up because it will impact the nice view the wealthy people living in that Isthmus enjoy. These are all ridiculous uses of space close to the CBD - which drive land prices up through the roof in the whole of greater Auckland. How many 18 hole golf courses and 108 hectare cemeteries do you think there in central Tokyo, or London or New York or any city with half a brain? Of course many people can never save enough to buy a house when we have such ridiculous limits on supply. What other outcome would we expect? You are playing into these rich people's hands by re-directing the problem towards mum and dad investors. What you should be asking is in what way is it reasonable for anybody (especially the Prime Minister) to own a single dwelling on 643m2 of land in Sandringham? In what way is it reasonable to limit the height of residential housing in the Isthmus to protect rich people's views? If they want a view, they can move to Warkworth. We don't have a housing crisis. We have an urban planning failure, which could be fixed with the stroke of a pen. And that's just the Isthmus. I could go on and on about the policy failure to provide supply. No the problem is not investing in residential property. Actually we want investors to build more homes. Lots of them. That is the only thing that will drive down prices.

It might take weeks or months to complete repairs after a Tennant moves out, or there's a death in the family and it could take years to settle a will and sell grandpa's old estate.
