As an American, I would like to extend full condolences to the people of New Zealand for the terrible quake that happened there recently. America supports you and we wish you the best.
I moved here from Holland in the 70s and became a citizen. I have been back in the 80s but will aways call NZ home I would fight and die for this land, it is truly a fantastic place and those who bag it have most likely never been here. KIA KAHA New Zealand! Stand staunch, sand strong, stand united.
In that last post, I got carried away and forgot the original reason I came to post on here! i just wanted to say what an absolutely fantastic rendition of the NZ national anthem that is. All that feeling and passion and brilliant vocal harmonisation! So uplifting - almost brought tears to my eyes! The All blacks must have felt like they were already 10 points ahead after that.
I have to be bias on national anthems, but i will say that even tho I'm from the states, new Z and Australia have beautiful anthems. Meanings, origin and lyrics aside, support your home wherever you be. =]
I'm from Japan.when I heard that NZ was going to send rescue team to Japan, I was really touched.thank you New Zealand! love kiwi! we can stand up Together....
One of the better National Anthems. And New Zealand was one of the first to place the original language of their land (Maori) prominent at the commencement of their traditional standard. Well done Kiwis.
Greetings to NEW ZEALAND from BRAZIL! All Brazilians who know this wonderful country love it and its people! it´s so special and moving that the first part is sung in Maori, the first owners of the land! New Zealand is an example to the world ! OC, the besides being sacred as all National Anthems, NZ NAnthem is beautiful !!!!
As an Australian it drives me mad that New Zealand has a better national anthem than us. I honestly believe that it is one of the most beautiful anthems ever.
After spending three weeks in New Zealand this past May and getting to sing this in Wellington, hearing "God Defend New Zealand" brings tears to my eyes.
@meL0n11 Yes, the verse is done in Maori, and then it starts again in English and continues in English. The full length Anthem is actually pretty long, this is the one the majority knows of though.
Love this, the best national anthem ever, my mate is over there and says their some of the best people in the world, great country as well, they beat us pretty well in Dublin but i still have huge respect for them, hope to get over there and visit sometime.
i'm from the usa, not sure everything that has been said here but I want to say that there are good and bad people everywhere. no one should ever single out a people as being all bad. There are many of us in america that are open minded and love all the rich cultures of the world. Peace Love Unity Respect!
Love this anthem, and I am happy to say it was written by an Irish man from my very home town Clones, Co Monaghan, Ireland. 'The words for "God Defend New Zealand" were written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish immigrant Thomas Bracken of Dunedin, a freemason
JJ Woods set the words of Thomas Bracken's 'God Defend New Zealand' poem to music as part of a competition in the 1870s. There are 5 verses. 'God Save The Queen' is NZ's other official anthem.
To the great people of New Zealand: Never give up hope. Our hearts go out to you across the world for your struggles and your losses. We are here with you. Love from the United States.
@schneke1 new south wales, tasmania and queensland were originally convict settlements, Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria started out as free settlements. WA (where I come from) had "ticket of leave" convicts (not-very-naughty convicts) from 1851 to 1879 in order to deal with the chronic labour shortage of the times. Mind you, isnt it also true that the New Zealand colony was originally an outpost of the New South Wales colony? :) :) :)
@sadie46A It's not a dumb question at all. NZ has 3 official languages - English, Maori and NZ Sign Language. It's been common now to sing the national anthem in both English and Maori for quite a while. Maori, being a vowel based language, sounds particularly appropriate in song. As for NZ sign language, they have just started showing it on tv but there's actually a person signing the national anthem. It's to demonstrate both Maori and Pakeha (white) cultures and language in NZ.
That's still really cool how the anthem seems to be always sung with the Maori and English verses. Definitely goes to show that New Zealand cares a lot about its cultural identity.
This is the coolest National Anthem, it's sung in the Maori language and shows great respect to the native New Zealanders! We here in the U.S. have a lot to learn.
Dear people of New Zealand In the next 4 years the people of Scotland will vote in a referendum to decide if they want to be an independent country, free from the United Kingdom. Please show your support for my countries INDEPENDENCE by giving this comment a thumbs up. Thank You From SCOTLAND. Long May Scotland & New Zealand Prosper ! P.S. You may even get a new flag if we become independent as the Union Jack will no longer be a recognised Flag.
