New Zealand's Solstices 2021(Southern Hemisphere)

On the celestial sphere, a solstice occurs when the Sun appears to reach its greatest northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator. Every year, around June 21 and December 21, two solstices occur. The solstices and equinoxes are used in many nations to determine the seasons of the year.
The term solstice can also refer to the day when this occurs in a broader meaning. For any place other than the Equator, the day of a solstice in either hemisphere has either the most or least sunlight of the year (summer solstice) for any place other than the Equator. "June solstice" and "December solstice," referring to the months in which they occur every year, are alternative phrases that do not imply which hemisphere is in question.
The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol ("sun") and sistere ("to stand still"), because at the solstices, the Sun's declination appears to "stand still"; that is, the seasonal movement of the Sun's daily path (as seen from Earth) pauses at a northern or southern limit before reversing direction.
Since New Zealand sits in the southern hemisphere we have winter solstice on 21st June at 3:31pm and summer solstice on 22nd December at 4:58am.

Yes. I was expecting the New Zealand sunrise to be much earlier on the summer solstice. New Zealand (Wellington) is at latitude 41* S. The UK is at 54* N. That 13 degrees makes the difference of 2 hours 02 minutes between sunrise. Exact length of the UK summer solstice day of 17 hours and 57 minutes as opposed to 14 hours and 42 minutes. I have to say it looked pretty cold on NZ summer solstice.

North of the equator, the Sun rises on your left side and sets on your right when facing the Sun. South of the equator, the Sun rises on your right side and sets on your left when facing the Sun.

Some weather stats, June 21st, high 16.6c, low 11.7c and 7.1 hours of sunshine from a 9.6 hour long day Dec 22 - high 23.5c and low 17.5c - 10.5 hours of sunshine from a 14.7 hour day (Airport figures). Great timelapse, shows our winters are decent and mild when its not raining. last winter was very dry except August, this year our winter has been extremely wet with major storms every 2 or 3 weeks and summer was wet too.

How come your summer solstice sunrise didn’t rise till like 6:00 am but mine rises just before 4:00 am
@saachitlobo2887
@saachitlobo2887 Год назад
It depends on the latitude and time zone ur location follows... Also do you have only one standard time all year round or daylight saving time during summer? My summer solstice is based on daylight saving time. Hence the sunrise is an hour late that standard time else i would have a sunrise just before 5am.

@Jakesart16 Год назад
@@saachitlobo2887 I have daylight savings
@saachitlobo2887
@saachitlobo2887 Год назад
@Jakesucksatfortnite Ok then it will definitely be the latitude. The further away from equator the longer the day in summer and the further east of the time zone longitude the earliest the sunrise. In my case, when i recorded the video i was in Auckland which has a latitude of 36-37°S and the timezone longitude is 180°E which is east of me. Auckland is on 174-175°E so thats west of timezone, hence sunrise is late n sunset is more late.
