Looking for a more privacy-focused cloud service? In this video we'll be creating our own file hosting solution with the free and open source Nextcloud.
Starting with the hardware requirements, we'll go from the ground up installing and configuring the software. Then familiarise ourselves with the intuitive web interface, including how to take advantage of the built-in Collabora LibreOffice-based office suite.
Besides working with files (and sharing them with others), we'll discover how to view pictures, add contacts and calendar appointments - and even set up a browser-based music player using the platform's ability to gain extra functionality through additional apps.
After learning how to also connect to (and synchronise) your data with Nextcloud through desktop and mobile apps, we'll finish by tackling the important topic of backing up.
So let's dive in and make our very own cloud.

Thank you very much for this detailed and thorough walk through for installing Nextcloud. I followed the steps and it worked a charm. The only thing missing for me (a noob) was how to turn off the Nexcloud computer safely from the PC after the installation is complete. (answer run "sudo shutdown -h" from the windows terminal when logged in with ssh). Looking forward to the remote access next.

Someone suggested below. sudo snap install classic --devmode --edge sudo classic And now I could install nano however as soon as i reboot and come back and check the logind.conf file its still the same. How can I edit it so I could close the lid of my laptop while keep it running to serve me as nextcloud?

Which mini pc did you use for this cloud service computer and what would be the recomended specs. Most computers have windows 10 preinstalled on them, do i just format the drive and install abuntu as shown. I know from experience you carn't easily recover a system once the hd is errased. I know i need a computer with an ssd hd for better performance is there any thing else i should consider essential. I am keen to try and set this up your tutorial is very instructive and it looks fairly straightforward fingers crossed. Thank for any help you can provide
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 года назад
It sounds like you're giving this some serious consideration. It's always better to plan ahead as it often saves time in the long run. I used an economically priced Beelink BT3-X Mini PC in the video. You don't need a power house for running Nextcloud. In fact, since you'll probably leave it on 24/7, low power consumption is best. In terms of specs, providing you only have a handful of people using Nextcloud, a Celeron processor should be ample - you may even get away with an Intel Atom. I'd go with at least 4GB of RAM, although 8GB would be better - especially if you do have multiple users. Unlike a desktop PC, you may actually be better off putting a traditional hard drive in your Nextcloud Appliance. The speed of your network will be a bigger factor than the speed of the internal drive, and you'll be able to pick up a much larger traditional drive for your money. For example, you could get a whopping 3TB Seagate Ironwolf (a model well suited to data storage) for under £100 - note, you'd probably need a 2.5" drive if you go the Mini PC route though. As you say, the vast majority of PCs will come with Windows 10 preinstalled. The good news is that you don't need to format the drive ahead of installing the Nexcloud Appliance, the installation process will wipe it and take care of all of that for you (or if you fit a larger drive to start with, this won't be an issue anyway). It's always worth taking a system backup of a new computer in case you ever want to return it to its factory state. If you'd like to see how to do this, feel free to take a look at my "Rescuezilla: Disk Imaging Made Easy" video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-20WpVButTW8.html I hope this helps. @bytemypi2918

The Ubuntu Nexcloud Appliance is designed to take over the entire drive, not to be installed onto a single existing partition. Let it wipe the entire disk during installation. If for some reason it won't, you could use a disk partitioning tool like gparted to wipe the disk first. Hope that helps :)

@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 года назад
While the Ubuntu Appliance makes life MUCH easier when it comes to setting up Nextcloud. On the flipside, unfortunately this simplicity makes hardware changes, such as adding an additional drive, a lot more complex. The bottom line is that, by far the easiest/quickest way to increase the storage using the Nextcloud Ubuntu Appliance is to back up your data, set up the appliance on a larger drive, then restore the data to it. The alternative would be to set up Nexcloud the traditional way, which again is a LOT more involved. If you'd like to take a look at going this route, check out the official Nextcloud support pages at docs.nextcloud.com/server/21/admin_manual/installation/ Hope that helps and thanks for your feedback.

Completly brilliant video, you are so good at explaining things step by step. I now have setup nextcloud and its running perfectly. However I've managed to mess up the ssh access. Worked fine from my PC so I thought I would add my laptop so I could access from that too. added an ssh key to the ubuntu account but then trying to connect the laptop I asked for a password which was constantly rejected. @bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 года назад
Thank you for your kind words. Sorry to hear you're having trouble with the installation. If the tab key isn't doing anything, there are a couple of things to check. First, make sure that the terminal is open in your USB stick's directory. This should be something like /media/ubuntu/USB (or whatever your USB drive is called). If that's correct, next check the name of the Nextcloud image you copied to the USB stick. You can enter the entire name manually after the xzcat command (e.g. xzcat nextcloud-core18-amd64.img.xz), but so long as you've entered the first part of it accurately, the tab key should complete the rest - note that the letters are case sensitive. Hope that helps :)

You're welcome. At the terminal prompt, where it reads "ubuntu@ubuntu:...", what does the rest of this line say? Also, have you copied the "nextcloud-core18..." image file directly on to your USB stick (not into a subfolder) and connected this to the computer running the live Ubuntu desktop? - both USB sticks should be connected to the PC at this point. If the terminal is open in the correct location, typing "ls" (without the quotes) and pressing Enter should list the "nextcloud-core18..." image file. It sounds as though the terminal is either not opening in the correct location (the root of the USB stick), or the Nextcloud image is not there.

@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 2 года назад
@@wyethlynch417 You're welcome. I'm assuming you set your Nexcloud appliance with a static IP address. If this is the case, you'll need to connect your computer and the Nextcloud appliance to one another directly (either using a crossover cable or via a network switch that is not connected to your new network) and give your computer a (temporary) static IP on the same (old) network as Nextcloud so that you can ssh into it. Once you're connected, locate the network file in "/etc/netplan". It will be called something like "50-cloud-init.yaml". You'll need to edit this using the vi text editor, as unfortunately nano isn't installed in the Ubuntu appliance. Once you've changed Nextcloud's static IP address to one on your new network (and restarted the appliance), change your computer's IP back to DHCP. Now connect both devices to your new network and hopefully you should be good to go :)

As the name suggests, its built specifically for the job, so you don't have to worry too much about the inner workings. Ubuntu server would be the way to go if you want to delve a little deeper under the hood. I'm not sure if the Nextcloud package you mention (when installing the server) includes the Collabora Online Development Edition (CODE) Office package - I know from experience that setting this up manually can be a challenge! I haven't had any issues with the auto uploading of photos from the Nextcloud app (touch wood!). I'm running it on Android, so not sure about iOS. Thanks for your feedback.

@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 года назад
Not a problem. Glad to hear it's working well for you. The purpose of the Ubuntu Appliance is to package up a system in a way that makes it far easier to deploy. The downside to this is that its not a simple task to get under the hood and make changes at the base level. Adding additional hard drives to a standard Ubuntu server is a relatively straight forward process. That said, it's a little more involved with a web server in the mix, as is the case with Nextcloud, as extra permissions need to be taken into account. With the Nextcloud Ubuntu Appliance, it only runs the core of the Ubuntu operating system and Nextcloud is actually run as a Snap package. While this is great from a security point of view, providing a smaller attack surface and an extra layer of isolation, it adds even more complexity when it comes to making changes such as adding additional storage. The bottom line is, while it should be technically possible to add extra hard drives, it is certainly not a simple endeavor. If you want a more customisable setup, I'd look at installing Ubuntu server and then manually installing Nextcloud on top of that. Be aware this is a time consuming task as a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) stack needs to be created and configured. You can find comprehensive instructions in the Nextcloud Admin Manual: docs.nextcloud.com/server/21/admin_manual/installation/ If you require more storage space for your data, a much simpler solution would be to install the Nextcloud Ubuntu Appliance on to a single larger hard drive. I hope this information helps you make a decision as to what route to take.

You're welcome. I'm always keen to hear what people are looking for. When I research potential video topics, I usually try and find the easiest way to achieve the desired end result. Not that long ago most projects would have required a more hands on set up. These days there are many more 'turnkey' type solutions. While these are great in that they do a lot of the heavy lifting, it can be at the expense of customisation. I've been considering going a little more in depth - a kind of from the ground up approach - in certain videos. I just don't want to alienate anyone who prefers faster results. Maybe I'll try a Linux server set up video in the not too distant future (Ubuntu server makes a great base for myriad open source projects) and see what kind of interest that generates. Thanks for your kind words.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble getting it to work. Ubuntu Appliances are designed to be self sufficient. As such they need to be set up independent of anything else. So, in answer to your question, yes, format the drive first and start from scratch. Since you already have an Ubuntu installation set up, you could alternatively install Nextcloud on top of that, but it's probably both easier and faster to start over with the Ubuntu Nextcloud Appliance. @@tin_man_kwt The nature of the Ubuntu Appliances makes them easy to set up but difficult to customise. The Nextcloud Ubuntu Appliance uses a Snap package of Nextcloud, which is in a container. This level of separation from the underlying operating system is what would make it difficult to add an additional drive. Even if you managed to, when the Appliance updates it may break the drive's mount point. That's why, if you're going to stick with the Nextcloud Ubuntu Appliance and need more storage space, I suggested imaging the installation onto a larger drive. The alternative is a manual install of Nextcloud (which is a much more involved process), but would allow far greater control over the setup. You're welcome, thanks for your kind words . It sounds as though whatever was previously on your computer's hard disk is interfering with the Nextcloud install. I'd try downloading GParted gparted.org/ and using Etcher to copy this to a usb stick. Boot from it on the PC you're trying to install Nextcloud on to, and go with the default options (press Enter when it says "Which language do you prefer?", and Enter again on "Which mode do you prefer?"). When you reach the desktop and the gparted window opens, select the drop down list at the top right and choose your computer's internal hard drive - it's probably /dev/sda (but check the size to make sure, as the following procedure will wipe the selected disk). Then, in the main part of the window, click on the entry to highlight the disk. From there, click on "Device" on the top bar and select "Create Partition Table". Providing your disk is no larger than 2TB, leave the partition table type set to "msdos" (for larger disks you'll need "gpt") and click Apply. Then click "Partition" on the top bar and select "New". The defaults should be fine but just check that both "Create as: Primary Partition" and "File system: ext4" are selected. Then click "Add". Next, click on the green tick (Apply All Operations) and confirm by clicking "Apply". When its done, close out of the gparted window and double-click "Exit" on the desktop to reboot. Remove the GParted USB stick and reconnect the Nextcloud one. Now you can run through the installation again - fingers crossed, it will go smoothly this time. Hope that helps :)

@@andrewmedina5508 You're welcome. Darik's Boot and Nuke - now there's a blast from the past! I haven't used that program for years. Despite the severe sounding name, technically there shouldn't be anything in DBAN that would destroy the physical drive. That said, the process of securely wiping data involves writing bits on to every sector of the hard drive, usually multiple times. So it's possible that if the drive was already on the way out, this could have pushed it over the edge. There are programs out there (usually made by the drive manufacturer) to perform a low level format to try and restore it. Personally, once a drive starts misbehaving, I wouldn't trust it any more. If the rest of the computer is ok, I'd look at replacing the drive. Thanks for subscribing.
