They actually hit at a higher speed in hockey. A study was done and it found hockey hits are, on average, 17% harder that football even though they weigh less. The equipment is actually much less protective than football padding. Also, many, many players have died and found to have had brain injuries.
@jawbone78
@jawbone78 Год назад
Football equipment is vastly less protective than hockey equipment. Both sports use shoulder pads and helmets, which may or may not be more effective in football (don't know, don't care), but hockey players also wear elbow pads, padded gloves, padded pants (some football players wear some additional padding here), and shin pads covering from above the knee to the ankles. They need it more, because of the nature of the sport (skates and sticks, high speeds), but those guys are armored head to toe.
@CN-uc6py
@CN-uc6py Год назад
@@jawbone78 hockey player may wear more equipment as in total coverage. I agree with that. However, the shoulder pads and helmet in football are much more protective. Even though hockey equipment covers more areas, the injuries sustained even while wearing the equipment are no different than the injuries sustained in football. With that being the case, one has to then concede hockey is much more dangerous.
@jawbone78
@jawbone78 Год назад
@@CN-uc6py it's not though. Football has a higher concussion rate and a higher overall injury rate. The difference between them is that hard contact is a part of hockey, and players regularly get hit, but it occurs in almost every second of every play in football. Football is more dangerous.

@@jawbone78 can't say football is more dangerous and im not saying hockey is, more concussions yes, you ever see a throat get cut while playing football? Sticks used as weapons? These two sports can say are more dangerous then any other sport besides rugby

In Canada the concussion issue with hockey is widely talked about. Football is so huge in the US especially in comparison to hockey that's why you don't hear about it as much. If you watch clips of hockey injuries you'll see how tuff it is and why so many of them have many missing teeth. @melrauko
@melrauko Год назад
@Tack Draas I get what you're saying and both sports have very legitimate safety issues. NFL has the grinding job of 50 trench collisions a game, hockey has higher speeds and a much less forgiving surface. In fact bouncing your head off the ice is deadly and probably the scariest thing in the sport. Fucking around with no helmet is no joke. Couple points for you guys as new to hockey- Penalties wont get called until the team that is to be penalized touches the puck again, ref will hold his hand up to signify the penalty is coming, giving the other team a chance until the offenders touch it, thats why you arent seeing the penalties called right away. 2nd- While brutally savage hits happen in hockey, checking against the boards injuries can be lessened from the incoming hit by getting/jumping up off the ice a little bit and letting your body go into the boards/glass to absorb the power/energy, The boards and glass will give flex/bow to absorb some of the hit. thats why you see them leave their feet when they the see the hit coming along the boards. But alot of these were the worst hits in hockey so alot didnt see them coming. You should watch a "Hockey best fights" video, you will be amazed the savagery its awesome.

So welcome aboard and enjoy the sport. If you like it now, go to a live game. There is no other sport that even compares to live hockey. Hockey is primarily a white sport mainly because of the expensive nature of the game. If a kid is to start hockey at an early age, the parents would have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on his equipment, ice time etc. And the reality is that most minority families are either not willing to, or can't afford to put their kids in such programs.

Most of the parents are rude and cheap, probably not in a good mood having shed hundreds for their kid to play one tournament. Outside the extremes the avarrage speed of a puck carrier is less than the one without and they are still going 15 mph at any point. Gliding is faster than running and the result is bigger regular hits in nhl vs nfl. "That's not a foul" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Fuck no, hockey players are tough, they don't flop and cry like other sports Guys don't fight after the game. You settle it on the ice. You square up. You don't jump people or look for people after a game. Everything's settled on the ice

On the flopping point..... yes and no, because the embellishment penalty exists. I'm also of the mindset that it's either the penalty, or embellishment.... never both.

I grew up watching hockey with my dad. If you can follow the puck while watching it can be a really fun game to watch but I get why it isn't as big as other sports in the US. Hockey absolutely has concussion issues as those hits may seem slow but they can really hurt each other out there. Hockey players on average are slightly heavier and taller than your average cornerback in the NFL.
@JayBrownMtl
@JayBrownMtl Год назад
Did my guy on the right say NHL players were slower than NFL players? Might want to rethink that. The difference is the hits are made shoulders to shoulder, in NHL ( legal ones). Hit to the head happen but are illegal and yes some guys had their career ended because of brain concussions (CTE stuff)

There was a great documentary that did highlight all the injuries to the brain and the affect on the players. It also highlighted how they have certain players who are enforcers whose job it is to hit other players. It’s pretty sad what the enforcers go through.

Edited to add...to see you guys see that there's no calls and that's how the game works makes me giddy. I also thing they understand the role of t he goon or enforcer without knowing it.

The one thing I love about hockey is you can see the difference between regular season to playoffs. these men put their bodies and sometimes life on the line to get to the greatest trophy in all of sports. they play around 80-100% in the regular season then when it comes time to the playoffs they play at 120%
