He randomly came into my gym after a playoff game a couple years ago, and walked up to me and talked to me, told me I was in incredibly shape, gave me a photo without asking, talked about my sick mom, and the next day he brought in a signed photo with a message to my mom (without me asking for it). This guy was THE nicest, classiest celeb I've ever met (and I've met Keanu Reeves in my gym).
Yea yea! Foot in the crease! What? It was a good goal ! Bologna !!! That's getting roasted... You know why? Cause nobody got the balls to say that to Brett hull in his face on national television besides Dominic Hasek
Frogman61789 There was no actual goalie interference. He didn't gain any advantage by the placement of his foot. That off-side at the crease rule was retarded, there was no interference, the goal counted, and Hullie got his name on the cup.
I love how Grapes and Hull agree with almost everything. They disagreed for a second and still seemed like best buds with respect for each other. Love it, keep fighting in and make it strong.
@@christiantaillon2930 How has it declined? I’m genuinely curious as to what your explanation is. Is it because most of the talentless head hunters have been taken out of the league? I love a good hockey fight as much as the next guy, but I enjoy seeing skilled players with amazing talent skating around opposed to a tie domi type who is only there to protect people. Don Cherry is old for a reason.
@@RoscoMontana21 I don't know it just seems different now. It seems like to me back then the sticks were made differently and sounded differently too. And the way the puck was moved around back then was different too. You don't see alot of the puck being shor around the boards anymore like 2004 or older. That's just what I've seen
@@christiantaillon2930 I see what you mean, but I think it’s just the inevitable evolution of the game. More players now are expected to have skill over toughness, I think because of injuries and the rise of concussions over the last 20 years has not only affected the rules of the league, but also the mindset of the players. Less guys are compelled to be physical when they can make a better career out of learning to shoot and pass better. Gretzky changed the game and inspired thousands of players to become more in tune with their finesse and statistic contribution opposed to 70s-90s hockey where games were heavily influenced by physicality.
I love Don Cherry man. I laughed when he asked Clement if he could go on about the fighting rule .. asking for permission just like he does with Ron Maclean. lol great stuff.
Every player who makes a million dollars a year or more should thank Bobby Hull. Don Cherry makes sense and Brett's idea of getting rid of those oversized shoulder pads is great.
Fighting actually has a purpose in hockey. Its not like they fight for fighting's sake. Hull straight up admitted that cupcakes like him were able to score goals because of enforcers on their teams. You have your skill players who are usually not the toughest guys on the ice and you have enforcers who will beat the shit out of you if you take a run at their skill player. It would be no holds bared on someone like Crosby without others protecting him. He would get injured every season. Its part of the game and yes, Americans love to see fights. Its also a way to put some spunk back in your team when they need a lift. You send out your bruiser to wreak havok. Its fucking awesome, God I love hockey. On a side note I hate how the NHL tries to lift popularity of the sport in the States. I believe they should try of course but the manner in which they try is bullshit like talk of getting rid of fights. Hockey will never be as big as football or baseball except for in select cities like Buffalo, St. Paul, Detroit, ect. Hockey will always take a back seat in cities like Dallas, L.A, Miami, and pretty much anywhere south of the mason dixon. Yet for cities like Buffalo and St. Paul the prospect of their teams getting moved to larger markets is always looming and they move them to places like Atlanta where no one has ever even seen ice in their sun soaked lives. I'm from Western NY where we live and breathe hockey, not just Sabres hockey. I have been to Sabres games that were nearly full when the team was completely out of contention. It may be a small market but the fans are there and aren't going anywhere. Canada has lost how many fucking teams? And where do those teams get moved? To some bullshit city that never heard of hockey. The NHL needs to build on its strengths. Its a Northern game with Northern fans. Quit shoving it down the throats of cities who don't give a shit while you take it away from cities who love it above all other sports.
The old enforcers often policed the game better than the refs. Cherry was spot on when he said there was no Gretzky rule, you just knew that if you touched Wayne, you had to deal with Dave Semenko. Bring back old time hockey!
"You got Nascar where there's crashes, NFL: kill the quarterback, Ultimate Fighting, who's kidding who?" Well said Uncle Don! If Don Cherry was on every NBC broadcast, ratings would go through the roof! Thanks for adding this video, long live Don Cherry!
Brett Hull is not an asshole. For all the goals and excellent commentary he has provided, that is farthest from the truth. I met him when he was younger, Bobby taught his kids pretty darn good, they were always polite and outspoken, just like Dad, but always spoke what they believed to be the truth, like Don Cherry, and, of course, they are most often right!...I think that is sooooo funny...bring Brett back to TV more!!! :-) (and Bobby Hull, while you're at it!)
The shoulder and elbow pads argument makes sense. But Hull's idea of making everyone not wear shields or visors is dumb. It should still be a player's choice but unfortunately, visors are grandfathered in and everyone will be wearing one within the next decade
That’s not what he meant. Don’t take it that way. He meant the US isn’t ready for his over the top crazy floral pattern suits... so he went more conservative with the pattern. That’s all he meant.
Also, spotted an inconsistency with Hull's words, when he said "we're combining fighting with great hockey", when fighting is one of the more key parts of the sport, and he even said "hey, let's not remove it from the game". Man, where's Bobby?
I don't think anyone was gonna take out Anaheim that year. That Blue line was ridiculous. The only people that could of had a chance of beating them was Buffalo and San Jose that year and that was a long shot too.
Haha love the chirp at hull about his foot in the crease goal in Dallas lol. It was a good goal, but because the rule was changed THAT DAY and hardly anyone knew. But you can tell Don and hull like and respect eachother. Old schoolers.
Brett's dad Bobby was a friggin tank. Met him in a liquor store in Toronto and the he was built like the Hulk and moved like a dancer. Brett is much like him.
He owned Brett because Brett was sucking up to him the whole time and then he still called him out about his foot in the crease on his goal against buffalo in the SC finals.
. Hoping I can finally hear Don down here in the states with Mr. Cherry being let go by sportsnet/rogers. Hockey down here sucks and I would love to hear him commenting on games rather than any of the national announcers. I was lucky to see HNIC when I did from 75-91. Haven't really seen Don since I moved down to VIrginia.
You fans down there should start calling the networks to let them know that you want grapes on. Maybe even start an online petition. So many people down there so it shouldn't be hard. Fans up here would love to see him on an American broadcast speaking the truth.
Don Cherry is that stupid uncle in the Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner. You can get rid of him, but it just wont be the same without him. He may say the dumbest things, but you gotta admit. Take Don out, then the game just wont be the same without him.
Fighting helps the players police themselves. Someone is less likely to make a dirty play that could really hurt someone when you have a bigger guy ready to punch your head off. Alot of respect in the fights too. Most say good fight to eachother afterwords. Laraque (spelling) was a good example of this. Would just ask, "hey, wanna go? Good fight brother!"
Dude 9 times out of 10 cherry is right when it comes to hockey. Hes been around a long long time. Hull is just happy to be talking hockey with a guy like Don thats all shit I'd be fucking stoked!
The biggest thing that's killed physicality is analytics. The numbers'll tell ya that there's no need for a big hitter if penalties are actually getting called. It'd be nice if the league changed a few rules so stuff like big, clean hits were allowed again. Maybe let strong wingers push guys off the puck carrier sorta like a reverse of the old clutch and grab.
we grew up with fighting in hockey, remembering blood baths like when Bobby Clark, Bobby Orr, an the like fought, and dont forget our enforcers from the Buffalo Sabres, Rob Ray/RAZOR, Jim Schoenfeld/SCHOENY, Jerry Korab/KING KONG who did not take SH... from anyone, and yet were crowd favorites to this day. I knew 'em all and thought they were great at the sport. hi robby.
@zparise123 when cherry brought up the foot in the crease at the end(talking about Hull's illegal goal in the cup finals against the sabres). It was a shot at Hull
I haven't followed hockey since I was a kid and that's cause I was a Lindros fan more than a hockey fan. Since it's televised more now on nbc and nbc sports I started watching again this year and I am addicted. I will say as a casual fan from California that the fighting aspect is one of the big sellers of the sport me and my buddies in the oilfields were just talking about how cool is it that there is a non-combat sport where fighting is legal and serves a purpose. Keep it or lose a lot of fans
lol ya cause we all dress like that. In fact I have that same suit in my closet right now. I can't find the volume knob though. We love this man in Canada. Legend.
It's my understanding that Don Cherry was also supposed to appear on NBC between-periods of the Winter Classic, some early-round playoff games next spring and the 2020 Finals, but after being fired by Sportsnet in Canada (the producers of "Hockey Night In Canada"), Cherry has also lost his NBC gig.
Do you have "Part 2"? Interested US fans should check out his regular Coach's Corner segments on RU-vid. Seems he had to dumb this one down a bit, and Hull's comments were a little overblown and transparent. The best moments were him taking Hull to task about his Buffalo goal, acknowledging Clement's hockey past, and ripping on The Governator.
