Nick won 2 ATP 500 titles in 2019. in Acapulco he rode through Nadal, Wawrinka,Isner and Zverev. Fully deserved Washington was way easier, only Tsitsipas and Medvedev in Semis and Final respectively, but still, that's a huge achievement.

The problem with kyrgios is that he's a great stroke player, but not a great match player. He'll always go for the spectacular looking shot, with no respect for the percentages. We Martina Navratilova once famously said, you don't win tournaments by playing brilliant shots. It's not possible. You win by being consistently good.

Point is, Tennis is just like most sports: for entertainment. It also provides much more room for making it entertaining compared to weightlifting or other similar sports where only the result matters. People dislike Kyrgios but I must say: he is the most entertaining player on tour. When I see a video of a Kyrgios match, I want to watch it. If you tell me to watch a top 10 player like Bautista Agut for example, I will not. Kyrgios makes Tennis more popular. His style, which is controversial, wether you like it or not, makes him among the most popular players next to all-time legends. He attracts the young generation. Yes, he is not a good example for kids but he does bring them into the sport. Just wanted to give my opinion on this matter for once.
@nicolasmotte2427

AO2020 he played a more grindy defensive game. I was very surprised...and not too pleased. Then again, knowing Nick, he might have been soft protesting the slow conditions haha. I love it when he's willing to hit those 90% effort forehands. I actually don't like the super flat line lickers that he hits ocassionally, because its not a consistent way to win. but when he's clearly trying to put heat on a ball, but is still dedicating some racket head speed to spin for some safety, that's when I start really getting excited about his game.

When Kyrgios turns serious and decides to play in order to win, he's the best "youngster", the tougher to beat, in my opinion. Better than Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Zverev, Rublev, Khachachov, De Minaur, Chung, etc. His serve is unapproachable, his forehand can be lethal, his backhand turns accurate, besides, of course, all his net game and trick shots to his service. And mentally he's fierce. His version against Federer in Miami 2017 was AMAZING, and just was barely defeated because Roger was in the zone. His run at Acapulco 2019 was also incredible, beating Seppi, Nadal, Wawrinka, Isner and Zverev. The rest of the next gen are way more professionals, of course, and it's a shame that Kyrgios doesn't share that commitment, but that's the way it is. We won't see Kyrgios dominating the tour, or even winning a GS, but we'll defintely see him embarrassing or upseting top dogs once in a while.

He needs to get his head together, winning a 500 tournament here or there is way below his talent and capabilities! But when your game is solely based on big serve...it will be very hard for him to ever win a slam. Maybe Masters 1000 is Kyrgios cap just like other big servers like Isner and Raonic.

his game is much more diverse than simply a "big service game."
@pomerlain8924
@pomerlain8924 3 года назад
He has more shots than shots than just his serve. He is actually a pretty good returner when he tries. And he can hit big off both wings. The problem is his fitness level and his mentality. He can hit brilliant shots, but he's not consistent. Once or twice a season, he'll get hot where he can win a smaller tournament relying on his brilliant shot-making. Like we saw in Acapulco and Washington last year. But it's never sustainable. In the tournaments immediately after those wins, he lost in the opening round. He'll do pretty much nothing for the rest of the year, except have tantrums like we saw in Cincy and Rome. And he's even stated that he's "too far gone" to waste money on a coach, because he'll waste their time. He even said himself that his goal isn't to win slams, it's just to have fun with it and play. With all the talent in the world, he simply doesn't care. He'll be content with having one or two good weeks a season and having tantrums at chair umpires. It's a shame, but he is who he is, and it won't change.

@kevinchang8090
@kevinchang8090 3 года назад
what's not to get? He's absolutely dunking on tsitsipas from the beginning of the match, everything he's doing is working and he's able to add flair. And this confirms what he desperately wants to believe, which is that he is a class above the likes of tsitsipas. It feeds the narrative that he clings to that he is the most talented player on tour and that the only thing holding him back is that he "doesn't care". So when things start to slip away in the second set he's furious with himself. He can't believe he's letting himself look "bad" on international broadcast. - Nick's problem is that he's a normal human being reacting normally to the insane pressure of having an entire community of fandom watching and judging your every move. Most ATP players don't make it unless they have a near psychopathic amount of mental discipline and drive to function under all that pressure, so I think we take that for granted, but I think Nick has the most relateable and normal brain out of the whole ATP...and a normal brain just isn't built for this job.

I wish Kyrgios played like this or tried to every match. It will be such a waste of a career if he continues the way he has the last 5 years
