Regular students on scholarship or not bring value to the university by furthering it's values and traditions (which are many reasons that people attend said colleges in the first place). They also contribute to research which also brings recognition to university. Kids must wait to enter NFL simply due to their bodies not being fully developed yet...might as well get a free education while at the same time further proving their skills against much better competition than what they faced in high school. Players want to sue the NFL for things that are beyond their control now, why add to that problem by introducing high school students to the mix to just get annihilated? You will never be able to make a good enough argument to change status quo.
@SHKBAK31
@SHKBAK31 7 лет назад
Kyle Tipton might want to put some context on that. That football/bball money not only from the seats sold, TV money the school got, and merchandise sold in states that big schools don't even play in...all that helped pay for the highest quality resources to give to those students that a smaller college can't afford even with donations. which is also a indirect reason maybe prodigy science or math kid might pick a school that helped bring that recognition. It isn't just values of a school, it's how can that school make me better to get where I want to be, and certain schools have unfair resources because of that extra sports money.
@kgtipton87
@kgtipton87 7 лет назад
SHKBAK31 if you look into it. most if not all of the money from sports and contributions made directly to sports through boosters and such stay within the athletic department or goes to building newer stadiums and other facilities for athletes. traditional students don't see a dime of that.

And they can't complain they making money off them ,tough when you play under a league or association you play by there rules, like it or lump it, and they get enough (too much) when they get to the NFL anyway, and those that don't they get the free scholarship and have a career for them other than football.

If you look at graduate programs especially in science, those students get paid because they are essentially teaching classes. Just pay the athletes, have them clock in for practice, you wouldn't have to pay them millions but pay them something. In the long run it would probably benefit the schools as well, because now athletes would be much more likely to stick around rather than jumping to the next level (NBA, NF etc.) because they are getting paid now. It would cut down on athletes especially in football not going as hard in their junior year, to try and avoid injury, thus making the teams better, making the school even more money, it would be a small investment for the school, which much bigger payoffs.

Oh I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to, my argument is that if they were getting paid it would benefit the school because more athletes would stay. Especially players who are like 4th-7t round draft players. I wouldn't have a problem with players getting drafted out of high school.

I would agree that certain positions do risk a lot more staying in college for 3 years while other positions definitely benefit from 3 years in college. Pretty much the positions that require physical strength & technique (OL, DL, TE, and LB) benefit because those high school players definitely need to bulk up in college and learn how to use their size better if they want to make immediate impact at the NFL level. However, RBs, WRs, & DBs especially risk the most staying in college for 3 years if they were 2-3 year starters because of the blows they take/give and the fact that NFL RBs, CBs, & WRs past 30 rarely get good deals these days, so they might as well try to get there as soon as they feel ready. For example, Fournette would have benefitted going to the draft last year because he would have a whole season of not taking hits to make more money in the NFL, but he was forced to stay that extra season even though LSU definitely has enough talented recruits to replace him.
@paulthompson5968
@paulthompson5968 6 лет назад
A major talent of Saban is that he somehow "gells" all that talent into team play. Except for very few players, on average Bama players who reach the NFL usually do not dominate as many others from many other college programs. This said, other great NCAA football teams come up short on making and developing young talented individuals into cohesive-team-play, even reaching to some kind of spiritual level. The more cohesive the team play, the more rare the coaching talent, even going beyond coaching talent and has to be better explained as some kind of forceful but gifted leadership in personality.

I think athletes should be given some sort of allowance from the merchandise the team makes or maybe in general. but I don't think they should be paid like a traditional employee. I could see the issue of how much you pay the athletes and whether certain programs would get preferential treatment. If so what ramifications that could raise. Plus universities should offer money management classes to athletes if the NCAA does decide to pay its players.

I dont know about paying players only for the sole reason that if you paid players, then it will be like baseball the only teams who win championships are the ones with the most money.
@SLKK1234
@SLKK1234 6 лет назад
People who think players should be paid are blind to reality. This is not my main point but you can't say a free education and the ancillary benefits of having played aren't extremely valuable. Easily $100,000. But here are the problems. 1. How can you selectively pay football players and not softball players. My guess is title IX would prohibit it. 2. Do all players get the same or are they paid based on their value to the team? 3. How much do you pay them? $5000 per year? That would be $385,000 per year just for football. Most schools have nearly 250 student athletes. So, that would be $1,250,000. Sure Alabama can afford it but can the Miss State, So MIss, and Troys of the world. You can't just pay division one players, after all. 3. Finally, no one is forced to play college football. If they don't consider the benefits to be worthwhile without being paid, then it's simple. Don't play.

The 3 year rule is there to protect the athlete. Speaking as a former college football player, no kid is physically or mentally ready for the NFL right after high school. Most are not ready after 3-4 years of college as evidenced by the number of guys that wash out in their first 3 years in the NFL. The revenue generated is a different discussion based on school and conference. The 3 year rule is a good thing. I wish they had that rule in the NBA so we could stop seeing such terrible play in that league.

the problem with paying "student" athletes is that not every school can afford to. even in Big 5 conference schools only Alabama, LSU, Florida, Texas, A&M, Michigan, Ohio, Auburn, FSU, AND MAYBE a few more can realistically pay the athletes and make profit. do you really think a schools like Purdue, Syracuse, Missouri, Arkansas state can sustain a football program and pay these athletes? close to 30% of NCAA division 1 schools would think about closing there programs if they are made to pay the athletes. which would lead to less schools and even fewer scholarships. don't just consider the cream when you are thinking about this problem.

But just thinking back to my college days, as rowdy as college football players were on campus, I couldn't imagine if they were all making six figures too. Might be too turnt up for a college environment. Maybe hold the money for them in a fund until they leave?

College players should get paid off merchandise sales and get it when they leave the college whether they graduate or not

Easy solution, you have the option to get paid, but you don't get a scholarship and have to pay for college, OR, you accept the full scholarship and don't get paid.

You can’t pay the athletes till you change or get rid of title 9. The only athletes that deserve to be paid are the ones who generate profit. So that basically is basketball and football. Most of the other sports lose money for the school.

Players don't need to be paid cause if that's the case colleges need to pay all the students who bring revenue to the school, i.e bands, cooking classes etc. what makes the athlete any different then the others also athletes have a higher chance of becoming millionaires when they graduate anyway compared to the debate teams or people who go to schools to even be a teacher or doctor so...yeah

The comparison to science is the only thing i dispute. You think that PhD student that discovers a new molecule with anti cancer effects is getting that money? Nah thats going straight to the university in funding or to their "coach" the person who is principal investigator. It does however get them a job where injury isn't going to have and effect on their earnings

If they are going to pay college athletes (which they should), then they should also be required to have personal financiers for them. It's common to see professionals, who are grown men, throw their money away-- imagine an 18 year old kid.

90% of student athletes graduate college, so upon graduating they will earn a decent wage as compared to the average citizen. If a person doesn't take advantage of their scholarship that is definitely their loss. I would have killed for an athletic scholarship, free breakfast lunch and dinner, a personal trainer, and killer body. I would have greatly sacrificed my shopping money for it, as one extra spending money ended up not being worth it in the end.

Pay college seniors at least. I think all players should, as long as they put in the work everybody else gets. Players should all make the same also. You can't pay millions for some players and thousands for others. They should all at least be making minimum wage or have the choice between getting paid or getting a scholarship. You can't pay players different amounts though, then you need to start having a draft so the same 5 teams don't always get the best because they pay the best. Also, who wants the feel of the game to change into an NFL feel? Who wants players sitting over money or staying out of the NFL so they can win 4 straight in some rich school. Maybe have incentives for winning or individual achievements.

the reasons college athletes don't complain that much is because a lot of kids came from the ghetto or hood, and in their whole lives they been told they won't make it to college. I think the kids are just happy to play the sport they love and get a scholarship

Just let the students do advertisements and accept gifts. That way the students that are worth something would get paid. I don't think Shannon is right that 99% of college athletes are trying to go pro in their sport. Maybe 99% of Alabama football, but most NCAA athletes never get close to being professional and a scholarship with a small stipend is more than fair for everything they give the school.

NFL would never allow college players to be paid because that would actually hurt NFL as whole and great college players would have less ambition to play in NFL and earn millions if they already collected large money during their stay at college. NFL owners know this and they will never allow this.

Zoran Filipovic but you don't have to pay millions for college students how 25 to 50k because if you have let's say a first round pick how much you make of his jersey millions and all the other stuff you have people him do your telling me that the millions your profiting off him and you can't pay 25 to 50k?

I know saying college athletes shouldn’t get paid is sexy but I believe it’s more about allowing the young adults to let them create their own brand with their own name. The kicker whom lost his scholarship is a perfect example.
