Nickelodeon overnight programming crawl (late November 1984)

Prior to the launch of Nick at Nite in 1985 making the combined network with Nickelodeon a non-stop channel, another cable channel, usually ARTS (later A&E) would fill Nickelodeon's evening programming. Overnight, the ARTS block would either repeat, shut down for the night, or move to a specially created promo crawl set to background music for Nickelodeon. As you can see here, this crawl simply shows upcoming attractions and various programs found on the still fledgling kids cable network.

The technology used for this programming crawl is similar to that which is used to create the local and public access channels found elsewhere on cable, as well as the text-based WeatherStar system used to generate The Weather Channel's "Local Forecast" (the WeatherStars I/II/3000, the WeatherStar Jr, and the WeatherStar 4000 which started out with just text before adding a radar and a full graphics package), and things such as teletext.

In the middle of the day, they had a Nickelodeon promo consisting of various show clips and this music played in that promo. At the end of it, a voice-over said "Every day, take off with Nickelodeon. We won't let you down." Unfortunately, they are letting us down these days with the shows they have now.

Looks so crude compared to today’s computer generated graphics. Hard to believe that Nickelodeon actually went off the air at night, let alone A&E (ARTS) sharing the channel.

Well, cable was still a new thing and satellite frequencies were still limited on how many channels could be carried.

For some, a crawl is a scrolling text in one line. Call it a "crawl", it just their own bulletin board.

Maybe Nick should’ve played some prog rock in the background like Genesis and Yes while these promos ran. It would’ve sounded great with some of the outdoor shows they aired at the time.

Nickelodeon usually branded those under their "Special Delivery" label. I've got copies of the Quarterflash and Haircut 100 concerts, and are presented in a similar matter to MTV's weekend concerts.

Nickelodeon had a teletext service? I thought only Ceefax was!
@PhirePhlame
@PhirePhlame Год назад
Not a teletext service, per se, since it was already part of the video feed by the time it got sent up to the home. The Weather Channel also provided similar systems to local cable headends to render local forecasts during its "Local on the 8s" broadcasts - this is still how Local is done, but the old Weatherstars have since been replaced with more robust computers.

OOPS! Fixed the title, since the tape also had something from '83 on it, but I see that OOC aired evenings Mon-Fri at 6:30 Eastern and Saturday Mornings at 9:30 Eastern and 5:30 Eastern late Sunday afternoons/early evenings. This was a transitional period for the network as the Pinball era was coming to a close, with the new Balloon font logo launching on December 1st. And honestly I'm surprised that more Saturday Morning blocks from this time don't exist, simply as alternatives that were airing on the Big Three and even some of the indies. You still began the day with Pinwheel, followed by Vic's Vacant Lot, OOC, Nick Rocks (AKA MTV Jr.), Video To Go, and Standyby.. Lights! Camera! Action! But Nick was a struggling network at the time which wasn't far from being axed, and a lot of people assumed it was just an obscure network playing ancient movies due to the network's name. I wasn't around yet at this time, but in the early-mid 90s I'd often watch Nick instead of the broadcast networks on Saturday mornings.
@PinkieLopBun
@PinkieLopBun 5 лет назад
@@pannoni8449 Yeah, Nick was struggling early on, but I think their fortunes were turning by this point. Fred Seibert said on the Nick Animation Podcast that Nick had become the #1 cable network by January 1985. Also, are you sure the splat debuted on December 1? This article makes it sound like it happened in October. They did continue to use the silver ball at sign off. www.newspapers.com/clip/29969392/nickelodeon_changes_its_image_logo/

@@pannoni8449 Saturday morning was still pretty much dominated by the Big Three and I don't think cable quite had the chops to go after that yet, especially if they needed to create their own original programming first.
