Our Nation, the United States of America needs more people like this young man who speaks out against hate and violence. The bullying & hate needs to stop. I agree more dialogue & compassion with & for our fellow beings would serve all of us (world wide) better than what is occurring now. While I agree that antisemiticism is something that should be condemned I also think its possible to disagree with Israeli policy and not be anti-semitic, just as its possible to be supportive of the Palestinian people without being supportive of Hamas or other terrorist groups. Certain Jewish people label any criticism whatsoever of Israel and it’s frankly brutal treatment of Palestinians, as anti semitism. This is wrong, lazy, and moronic. I think it is also possible to be a Zionist ( A sane Zionis or MOderate Zionist) t- to beleive the Jewish People deserve a Jewish State and not agree with the Policies of the Natahanyu Goverrmnet. I don't agree with bombing Gaza. I also question how the attack of 10/07 could happen with all the tight Border security that Israel has. I also quesiton why it took 7 Hours for the IDF to respond to the IDF Attack. Juar like in America,I think most Ameircan People are good, but I think there are real problems with the American. LIke we have a President who is obvioulsy Senile and we have to wonder who is really running the Country since it is obviously not Joe Biden. Also, we are suppose to have a 2 Party System, but RFK Jr was told he couldn't run in the Democratic Primary for President because the Party Leadership fixed the Primary. I watched this live yesterday. My heart goes out to anyone being subject to terrorism (threats and actual), but especially such fueled by antisemitism and anti-Muslim. Through friendships Jewish Americans and Muslim Americans have long been part of my life. This young man's testimony is important. ↘️ Monday I was disturbed by your closing exchange with Donny Deutsch. He is a good man, but his remarks seemed to be saying that the only problem is antisemitism. I doubt he meant to convey that idea. FBI Director Wray has said that domestic threats of violence towards Jewish Americans AND Muslim Americans have increased. Violence towards either group should not be accepted. ↘️ Later Monday evening Joy Reid closed with commentary by her and then Peter Beinart that truly reflected my own thoughts and feelings. I would love to see you, Joy, Ari, Ali and others there come together in a round table discussion of this,

I went to work in the music business in 1973 in an office job. I was 19. I had worked concerts before that. Now I was in promotion and sales for major labels. I loved my job and my bosses. ppl often asked me what it is like to work for Jews. I never thought of this. I then realised yeh they all had jewish names. I was curious why it was a thing. I had a best friend who was jewish as a kid along with a black girl. I remember some kids would say things sometimes about them but I never bothered thinking about it. we just ignored them and played on. My parents said to me some kids listen to their ignorant parents. I was always taught to rise above ignorance. We were poor according to middle class snobs who also judged us all for where we lived but we read books and were educated at home and at school. I think many ppl are not educated as children bc I still do not get why it bothers other ppl who or what others believe when it has no affect on you. I still do not get it in 2023. I have worked for muslims, christians, jews, a buddhist and nudist. I do not care and do not understand why anyone does.

Kudos to Nicolle for bringing in an actual student for perspective. Imho it’s important to be able to question and challenge the validity of geopolitical decisions and choices…without being disrespectful. That is imo a core reason for University…to learn critical thinking. However, this situation in the Middle East is complicated, nuanced, emotional and neither side is 100 percent in the right. It will take DIFFERENT thinking to stabilize the situation. Islamophobia and Antisemitism are both unhealthy and unhelpful imo. People are suffering and I so wish the focus could be on alleviating the suffering vs retribution. There will time to bring Hamas to justice. But not through raining violence on both the people of Gaza AND the Israeli people. It makes my heart hurt to hear that Antisemitism is against on the rise. Unfortunately, imo I fear the actions of Netanyahu are only adding fuel to the fire. Hamas cannot be trusted , they have betrayed people for disgusting ideologies and they are a terrorist organization and there should be no safe harbor for the members.

Back in the 70’s and early 80’s in Australia there was a lot of programs that talked about seeing the differences between groups. There was a tool that was used called ‘Blue eyes / Brown eyes. The participants where split into 2 groups, then they were separated and given a talk about the pros of their group and the cons of the other group. It was amazing how quickly emotions rose to the surface, including feelings of hostility. Then the class came together and the discussions of what had happened and how people could identify with their feelings. This needs to be brought back, in today’s climate.

It went way deeper than that, & was developed by Jane Elliot, an American diversity educator, as an anti racism tool.
@chrisfreebairn870
@chrisfreebairn870 7 месяцев назад
Also, it attracted quite a bit of criticism, & as a technique to reduce racism has not been shown to be especially effective; producing some negative effects, one of which is over sensitivity - the walking on eggshells effect. She went on from teaching to diversity training with big companies, govt depts etc, & became a dominant force in the DEI education space. It's a powerful technique, but needs to be well managed & used in an age appropriate way; she started it with grade 3 kids the day after MLK was assassinated - probably too young for such a full on role playing immersive exercise. Role playing learning imho is a v powerful method, bc it supersedes words, dealing instead with emotions; this is why it has to be well thought it & managed - bc there's always going to be a balance bw learning & stress. That doesn't seem to be a problem in serious training for harsh realities, like emergency services, police & military, where high stress is an accepted part of the task & thus a critical component of training. It seems that life & it's challenges is not to be taken as seriously, hence we can't stress anyone too much to teach critical skills anymore, especially the little darlings were coddling into perpetual emotional childhood! Meanwhile, the Russians & Chinese are deliberately toughening up their ppl, militarising them at a very early age. What could possibly go wrong?

@cocofluff No, no harassment of Jewish Americans should be tolerated. It should not involve a threat of death to motivate the university to take actions and precautions to make their students feel safe. You cannot hold random Jewish students accountable for Israel. I grew up in SF in the 60-70s. I never experienced or took part in racist behavior. It was and should still be considered ignorance! It was a giant melting pot and everybody's Mom wanted to feed us.❤ I had a beautiful childhood and the teen years were lit🎉 Great music everywhere and Santa Cruz for surfing and mescaline . Good Times. Love Each Other ❤❤

The root of the problem is a key aspect of human nature - tribalism. It’s unavoidable, as it’s a byproduct of kin selection, which is profoundly strong and dynamic. But, if we are aware of its roots we could at least talk about it in a much more constructive manner. What I am getting at is, Nicole asks, “Where does it come from?” Then there is a pause, silent stares, and then the implication is some kind of moral failure and that people could freely choose differently. That is not the case. It’s in our DNA. Free will is, at best, very hard to exert, and is likely based on exerting self control. It’s not like we freely choose to do these awful things (and the nice things, too). We are largely captives of our evolved nature. So… We are biased against most anything different, anyone outside our group / tribe. Only by seeing this in our nature, that it is not a moral issue in the typical sense, but an innate drive, can we possibly learn to consciously exert self control to address this drive. But no, we lapse into gauzy quasi-religious and moral indignation and let the drive go unchecked. We have met the enemy and they are us. If we don’t see that we will lose everything. As we have seen, the Israeli Jews are as guilty of this as the rest of us. Given all this, this interview completely misses the mark. Don’t get me wrong, I like a lot of what Nicole does, but we won’t make progress talking about things in this way. Will no one tell the emperor (humanity) that he has no clothes? That he is not divine? That he must first “know thyself”?

Not sure I agree with you on the DNA part as that would be reducing racism to science. I do, however believe in tribalism and agree that it should be considered when discussing racism of any kind. It's a good point.

What is the reason(s) Hamas attacked Israelis on Oct-7-2023. This is not just happened. This has been going on for 75 yrs now. What are the root causes of conflict ??? These students must research / re-read / re-study / the causes of conflict. Then, think about what is the solution. How to solve the problems. Don't trust those leaders tell you what to do. It seems for 75 yrs, those leaders failed to solve the problems and not much changed. As a younger generation, you must stand up and do something to make it right. Both groups, Palestinians and Israelis must recognize what is wrong and what is right.

The class that Yoni is describing is Critical Race Theory. If only it wasn't so divisive to talk about the class, we might begin to make some progress here. "Critical race theory is an academic concept that is more than 40 years old. The core idea is that race is a social construct, and that racism is not merely the product of individual bias or prejudice, but also something embedded in legal systems and policies"

I wonder if blind hate is used by many to feel better on the social ladder? When a group or person is pointed out as negative are we just saying I'm not part of that negative and so I am better. It doesn't work psychologically so the person trying to look better by making others look less in some way just keeps going with their blind harm of others.

It's human nature to want to feel superior to or more successful than others. If everyone in America was white, there would still be discrimination, based on status, money, connnections, politics, religion. It will never end until mankind ends.

Knowledge leads to understanding. Ignorance leads to hatred. Years ago I watched a 60 Minutes expose on a summer camp in upstate New York where both Israeli and Palestinian kids were brought for two weeks. When the two weeks were over, the kids did not understand the reason for all of the things that they were told at home about the "other".
