Nier: Automata - Some thoughts on Adam and Eve

Having played though Nier Automata, I realised they followed through with the bible theme quite a bit. Eve was born from Adam's ribs (he rose out of Adam's chest), and Eve often holds a half-eaten apple during cutscenes. It appears they named themselves from reading human literature though, as Eve asked at one point why they couldn't be called Abel and Cain since they were brothers and Eve was a female name.

You got me with the Hermaphrodite joke; good job. Can't really say much to this one except that I'm pretty sure the red eyes have the significance we think they have. I haven't spent much time looking into clues and hints concerning lore in the Automata material because I'd rather not watch all of it. I just remember that spoiler nuke of an intro trailer for NieR which literally had scenes of the endings in it so I'm rather careful with trailers. Well made video again though; the hype can barely be contained.

Dragons in drakengard tend to have biblical names (Angelus, Michael, etc), and Adam and Eve have dragon like accessories. Maybe they're dragon human hybrids made with the remains of Angelus' body that was stolen long ago.

i love how yoko taro can throw in fan service and weave it into story for perfect meaning. butt can he explain 2b's outfit design.

We already saw that Adam and Eve have no genitals. They're sexless but emulate males in behavior. (This should apply on androids as well) It's interesting that Eve wasn't quite Adam's brother. He was born pretty much the same way male One was from his sister. They're imperfect clones. Both male One and Eve seem to require the existence of their sibling (or more accurately: creator) in order to merely function properly. Both turned into emotional wrecks following the death of their siblings. One endured for a while, whereas Eve didn't survive long enough for us to know how he would have dealt with his situation.

The new trailer has an interesting implication regarding something adam says. In the english dialogue he says "Perhaps, we are not so different after all." But the original japanese line is different, he says "Perhaps androids and biomachines are similar". I think the localization probably just changed it to make it sound more natural, but if he's essentially saying the same thing then this seems to confirm that they are biomachines. We'll find out very soon.

Looking at these two characters now after the game's release, they're kinda the male version(s) of Devola and Popola. They are tasked with controlling all machines similar to how Devola and Popola were in charge of watching over all the replicants, they both seek out humanity ( one aimed to restore humanity combining the replicants and shades, while the other wishes to simply study and understand them), and when one dies, the other goes completely berserk ultimately leading to the false deaths of major characters ( 92 and Emil). Without both sets of twins both shades and machines end up succumbing directionless, mindless, berserk drones meant to die. It was nice to see the parallels between the the two pairs.

I used to own Drakengard on my ps2 back in the old days. I randomly saw in my recommended videos section a title stating "...from drakengard to nier automata" and I have played NieR in my teenage years but never saw the connection. Today I've discovered your channel and found in it a story I never knew existed. Thank you for this. I am now interested in the NieR series more than i've ever been. Hi, I really like your videos. You started uploading these at the exact time I was getting into learning about the series, and they've been great. I'm looking forward to more :)

I love going back through these videos of automata theories before it was released. A great deal of Valkyrie's ideas mentioned have been either pretty close to the actual game or my personal favorite when the story speculations are so packed with intriguing ideas that gets me really thinking. And if it's speculations about possibly characters I already love being brought back like Accord in Automata or Caim as Red Eye being the antagonist in the new Nier give some thoughts and prayers for my friends because I'm going to take them on a road trip to Lore City where Clemps is the mayor but I have a major role as the city council comptroller.

There is just so much to the lore here. I think I said it in your other video on Neir, but I think you would find a lot of success if you did a series on it where you took things game by game with depth. I love the sound of your voice though. Please explain more games to me!

As someone who has near to no knowledge of Nier/Drakengard lore, those are some really interesting videos. Feels sort of like catching up on Dark Souls lore from youtube videos back before DS3 release. I have since gotten really engaged in the lore of previous entries since the lore points from them keep coming back (due to the whole cyclical nature of DS universe). I hope that Nier: Automata will provide a similar experience and it will most likely be your channel that provides the most backstory for me since I don't really see many RU-vidrs attempting to discuss the lore (probably because of how convoluted it is). With all that being said I'm really enjoying your channel and will be coming back. I would also like to suggest that you make some shorter, more topic-specific videos. I get that due to interconnected nature of the story between games it might be hard to cover just specific parts in detail, but still I would like to learn more about the Watchers cult, individual Intoners, and that one guy you mentioned was secretly a superweapon (?!?!) etc. in particular the really old parts of the story that probably will have little mention in Automata.

Your videos are not only thought provoking and helpful in understanding a convoluted and mind-screwy franchise, but also enjoyable to watch and listen to on their own thanks to clarity, good pacing, and a soothing voice. I'm very new to Nier and the work of Yoko Taro, and for the longest time, had no idea whether I wanted to bother getting into Automata. Your videos very quickly convinced me that the world was quirky and weird, but in a good way, and worthy of attention and deciphering. I'm currently making my way through the game and really loving it, thanks to your videos. They've made me pay a lot more attention to the world, and given me just enough context to start picking up certain hints and queues. While I'm probably way off with my floundering speculations, it's really fun to do nonetheless. Reminds me a lot of Evangelion, in a lot of ways. An otherworldy, twisted, one of a kind story that can easily come across as weird for the sake of being weird, but actually possessing an incredible depth and consistency once you put enough time and effort into figuring things out. Just thought I'd drop a little note of rambly appreciation. Thank you for your work so far, they're really great and I have no doubt I'll rewatch them many times during and after my playthrough. Please keep making them, and I hope you feel better with whatever health issues you might be having. Now I'm gonna go back and check whether Adam or Eve have a vaporizer.

Holy shit you are amazing. I never heard about Nier until I saw promotional material for Automata and then stumbled across your channel and it has made me really interested in the series. I would love more in depth videos of each of the games and the lore as your previous video was too compact for a newcomer to properly and easily understand some of the lore (especially the order) but no doubt was still an amazing recap and your editing and voice really make these videos entertaining so please omg please make more :D!!!

I've only ever played Drakengaurd 2 but wow im suprised how much you know about all the games! So much lore!

Those binding symbols used on the goddess were on the final boss in Nier Automata if you look at their unit info. The Watchers are a real mythology known as the Gregori, they have been in many games including Star Ocean. This is very interesting, while the watchers do not appear in N-A I kinda got the feeling when fighting the red heading girls In the Network that they were somehow connected to the Legion. Also that weird deep voice in the Network reminded me of Manah's voice when the Watchers spoke through her. The Watchers Dance, Lalalalala...

I would LOVE to have an update on these thoughts! Now that you've probably completed Nier Automata :) I've only gotten into the universe thanks to Automata's popularity and me being insanely in love with the game, and thanks to your videos I know quite a bit and can fill the plot holes in Automata with ease. But your thoughts on this now updated with Automata's completion would be a lot more in-depth and super informative!

I think it's worth noting that the biblical story of Adam and Eve involves Eve being created from one of Adam's ribs.... just like One was created from one of the original One's ribs. Doesn't seem like a coincidence!

what if 2B and her allies wear blindfolds to hide the fact their eyes aren't crimson? makes perfect sense to be honest, and that there's a whole entire story behind staying a pure intelligent machine instead of being a possessed machine

Haha, I only ran across this video after having finished Automata, and none of this speculation really panned out, but it's really interesting to see what fans were brainstorming before we knew what was up.

Ah, very nice video!...Though, I'm watching it after the game's release, so sadly, I don't get to speculate quite as much as you. It would certainly be interesting if the Red Eye disease found its way to Earth from Midgard in some way. And, the Watcher symbol on Eve was certainly a nice callback...Maybe, considering Yoko Taro and his strange, beautiful mind, we could assume that the Aliens in Automata were come sort of...maybe not Watchers, but some race from another planet that was ascended through worship of them?(A bit like what happened to some of the Townsfolk in Bloodborne) We might even be able to assume the symbol came up during Adam's research into humans(considering there IS confirmed to be at least 1 Accord running about, it's not ENTIRELY farfetched that he might have seen the symbol at one point or another), and maybe Eve used the symbol in his bid to destroy the androids as a tribute of sorts to his human-loving brother. But in any case, I'm certainly looking forward to more from Nier(and maybe Drakengard, who knows? A man can dream) in the future, just to see where the story goes from here. Maybe there'll be new humans made? Maybe further entrances in the series will feature mainly androids? Or, maybe, just maybe, we'll get a chance to see the one-and-only Wonderful Zero again in some way-shape-or form(that one I really hope for, since the branch D ending for Zero was somewhat intentionally vague, I think.) In any case, wonderful video, and looking forward to more!

An hour ago I didn't even know these games existed but thanks to your videos and kind voice I got a lot of inputs. My guess is that the main characters in NieR: Automata also will have red eyes underneath their headscarfs. Or maybe something even superior. Don't ask me why, it's just my thought.. Awesome video, really like the explanation videos, having only played drakengard 1&2 and Nier which is a personal favorite. I would absolutely love if you did a playthrough of automata when it comes out with your toughts, it would be even better if it was a blind playthorugh but I understand that can be a very personal experience.

When I first played I tried my best to not kill them. I felt really bad for Eve especially during 9S's run. When I finished ending [E] I was relieved to see them in the ark, and I cried after the credits. Seeing so many people sacrificing their data to help someone so useless as me really got me. Due to my ineptitude 4 pods were destroyed the least I could do was fight for others right? I hope my pod and effort can help others and I'm sorry if my rambling is annoying

They both remind me of Loz and Yazoo from Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children. Eve having the strong emotion and physical skill of Loz and Adam having the intelligence and cool demeanor of Yazoo

I can't wait for you to do a full recap and your thoughts on this game once you're able to. I've achieved every ending, including the "true" ending, so to speak and I have my own theories but i'd like to see how well they compare to your own, since you've done a lot more research outside of the games themselves (Novels, etc).

one and one is very similar to adam and eve story (made from rib) so it makes sense that machines are using that as example - eve being brother One (who also makes cult of watchers)

Have you watched Amazarashi's music video for Nier:Automata? The music video seems to be talking about gaining of lives for robots, and towards the end we can see the robot who are controlling the factory turns his eyes from red to blue as he gains emotions. Not entirely sure how that connects to the theory but at least it seems like the robots' red eyes may have something to do with lives and emotions after all. Either that or its just one artistic way to convey change in character for robots...

I would like you to know that you have swayed me into getting Nier: Automata. This will be my first step into the series. Whether this is saying thanks or pointing out a regretful decision has yet to be determined. I'd like to think it will turn out to be the former.

So I haven't played Nier Automata yet. I saw this video before it's release. But from what I've learned of my research I prefer your thoughts and theories on these two characters and the Cult and the Watchers. It would have brought back an old enemy we hardly saw, in a new and interesting way, and tie it into Drakengard more. Which even though it's a different world, I mean, these things happened because of the Drakengard events. And I was hoping for more information on the Red Legion in this world and what happened to Angelus' body.

I could be wrong totally wrong here, but after watching your previous video (it was great by the way), and playing games myself i have one interesting feeling about Adam and Eve. Remember that in your previous video you said about the commander of the "Legion" and that we don't actually know who he is (and you pointed out that he could be Caim). But what if the first "Legion" commander was one of the Duo, and after some time (if we consider that at one point world was thinking he is dead) another one took the command and was killed (maybe they are somewhat immortal), and after so many years, they just reappeared in order to get they jobs done?

I just finished playing Automata, and then after listening to this, I'm like red eye disease, the stuff on Automata, the cult of the watcher symbol on Eve marks, oh god, so much I did not catch by not playing the drakengard games

Aurora, the timeline of drakengard was running parallel to our normal human world right? Since i have seen in various timelines in various pages that the world of Drakengard was just like ours till the time of the Roman Empire and just then is when this strange city appears with magicz and technological advances from nowhere and all of the other empires fell in the great collapse and Europe was renamed as Midgard, Im correct right? This could mean that the timeline of Drakengard is like a branch of Nier's world and not the other way around?, because Nier's world was basically our normal world and just went to shit when Angelus and Caim breaked in. I think one of the big mysteries if not the big mystery of this saga is who the fuck the Cathedral City made it to our world, and even more interesting is that the Cathedral City didn't infected the people living on earth despite being a thing that comes from probably another dimention/time, while in Nier's branch the maso it was actually an incompatible particle to human life. Besides the Cathedral city seems like a futuristic Tokyo. Also now thanks that we now about Automata it isn't a little strange to you how Accord is becoming pretty similar to androids that where made 10k years in the future in Automata? A time-traveling android with advanced AI is a technology that can only come from the advanced human civilization on the Moon. Im gonna go nuts if at the end of this saga everything is a full circle paradox, like Time-travelling experiments in a futuristic japan, accidents happen, the whole city is sent back in time to the the year 800 leading to the events of drankengard 3 and 1 and then nier and automata, and in automata humanity sending androids back in time to the events of drankengard 3 looking for a way to fix things. Yeah, yeah, i know, all of this is speculation and stuff and sounds crazy, it just gets me excited if the plot becomes a full circle. As a side note it would be really innovating that the main game (drakengard) is actually the side branch while nier and automata are the real main games but made as spin offs. Im still super suspicious about the cult/ group that stealed Angelus body before the events of Nier 1, if in Automata theres something, whatever thing that comfirms time travelling that could open various plot points. Im also confused as why sings of the Cult and the intoners are appearing in automata. About the machines my only explanation for the moment is that since the humans fleed to the moon the watchers had not other choice than possess the machines, but tbh i would prefer just an actual alien virus infecting machines instead of the WCS again. ps. I'm pretty sure that Adam and Eve are also a reference to Dante and Virgil of Devil May Cry, since Platinum Games is owned by Hideki Kamiya, creator of that series. I think there's some company mandate that all Platinum games feature a red oni/blue oni duo.

It may also be worth noting the method by which One created Brother One could also be an inspiration for the names "Adam and Eve", since they seem to be connected to the cult in some way.
