THE BREAKING2 two-hour barrière Full Race with Paula Radcliffe
Strategy: These are the pacing and fueling techniques that will help to guide Lelisa Desisa, Eliud Kipchoge and Zersenay Tadese to the first-ever sub-two-hour marathon finish.
An electric car informs key information
In this attempt, pace is everything. To help Kipchoge, Desisa and Tadese remain aware of the pace they need to maintain to hit their 1:59:59 target, an electric car (that won’t blast the athletes with exhaust) will drive about six meters ahead of the pack, showing the race pace, the amount of time that has passed and the projected marathon finish time. “This is typical of most road races, but the Breaking2 lead car will update this info every 200 meters whereas other races typically update these stats every kilometer or 5K,” says Dr. Brett Kirby, researcher and lead physiologist of the Nike Sport Research Lab.
NNmarathon Pacers will help the runners keep record time
To break the two-hour barrier, the athletes can’t afford to go a second slower than they need to. That’s why a team of 30 pacers (made up of some of the world’s best distance runners, including Bernard Lagat) will aid the runners to a sub-two-hour race finish by running to help them maintain a steady race pace and by creating a wind divergence. Athletes were invited to join the pacer crew based on their running capabilities and temperament. “We needed calm, steady pace runners who can run the same speed repeatedly,” says Dr. Brad Wilkins, a physiologist and the director of Nike Explore Team Generation Research in the Nike Sport Research Lab who works with Kirby on all things Breaking2 science
Monza Italy: Eliud Kipchoge came a mere 26 seconds short finishing in 2hour and 25second over the marathon distance
Zersenay Tadesse also recorded a personal best time
Next up Eliud Kipchoge goes for the London Marathon 2018 after winning gold in the Rio Olympics 2016 #INEOS159

This is all very cool and fun to watch, but at the end of the day, the whole thing is about humanity’s round-figure bias: we think there is something special about crossing 2 hours flat compared to say 2:00:13 or 1:59:27.

@aroundandround

@@jonm3024 True, but our round-figure bias is central for generating mass enthusiasm, for example, no one would care anywhere near as much about say a “1:58” project at this point.
@jonm3024
@jonm3024 2 года назад
@@aroundandround Right... I wasn't denying the existance of the bias, just pointing out that it is often used to our advantage... For example: it might not be as motivating to say "we're trying to break 1:58" as to say "we're trying to break the record by 2 full seconds". The way you phrase things has an impact on how you motivate... and there is nothing wrong with phrasing things in a way that motivates us towards advancement IMO. If using the round figure bias gets us to improve more rapidly, great!

It looks like the running pacers started to lag increasingly behind the pacing car after about 1.48 running time, also keeping Eliud back then. Perhaps if the front pacers had kept a perfect 2.00 schedule and had kept up with the car he could have followed them?

Hi there, I am getting in touch from The Running Channel as we are putting together a second round up video of great Running Documentaries/films. (Link to our first round up: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RaKAZqIS9HM.html) We really enjoyed this film and would potentially love to feature it in our video. Would it be ok for us to use some footage from this film? We would just use short clips (up to 30 seconds) from the film and would link to the film in the description box. My email is sarah@therunningchannel.com if you need any more information or have any questions. Thank you!

No wonder it's not an official record, the formation of runners is not for pace, one pacer would be enough. It's to form air resistant bubbe around him, that's the science behind it. I wonder why nobody is talking about this... Why do you even need other runners when you have the car??
@brianling2439
@brianling2439 2 года назад
have you ever considered the fact that if you had one person pacing eliud the whole time, that person would also have the world record? The pacers aren't as good as eliud, so that's why there is a group. In case one drops out eliud won't completely lose all guidance. In addition, the pacers swap in middle parts of the race too since they can't keep up with the pace for the full marathon
@David-ez1fp
@David-ez1fp Год назад
Its alot more complicated than you think. The car being there technically makes it worse since the whole it punches in the air is fine for being directly behind it, but it leaves a turbulent wake behind it. Means that the air flow around the pacers is more turbulent than if the pacers were the only ones in front of the runners. But the thing is, you need to have pacers for the benefit of the runners, and you need to pace car to keep the pacers at the steadiest pace possible. Also one pacer is definitely not enough lol

This race strategy by Nike is severely and fundamentally flawed. Constant pace is totally wrong. As seen by all 3 runners, their 2nd half was much slower than their first half. Negative splits is the only right way. Why the hell are all runners running negative splits? Because it's the natural thing to do for the human body! Stupid mistake by genius Nike.
