Great to hear your thoughts on this shoe Tim. This does sound like it could be the best nike trail shoe so far but it doesn't sound too amazing. I will be in the look out for a full time trail runners review. They do look awesome in terms of style though. Great video as always Tim! 😎🤘

Yeah I have to admit I am not anywhere near your league as a trail specialist as it were. Right now the underfoot conditions are quite rare for us in the UK with not a drop of mud to be seen so obviously going to be hard for anybody to usefully comment there unless they got sent them ahead of time as it were. I suspect it would be a shoe that some runners will like for long trail runs and when comfort is more important than out and out performance. Hard to see somebody like Seth charging up a mountain in these!

Hiya Tim, thanks for the review. I must point out I'm no runner myself - due to bad knees and lack of will, mostly. However, I'm now shopping for a pair of running shoes to start light jogging as gym and bike doesn't cut it for me anymore. I'd do a bit of running on the riverbank where's this sort of dusty road, and across the field to get there. I always liked trail shoes better, they provided me more cushion and grip - I think. The reason I'm looking into these is that I'd also use them as hiking shoes in the summer - the grip seems to be good there, and I like the fact they are wide. That is a nice change as Nike used to make their shoes (even the everyday ones) quite narrow, which annoyed me. Btw, where do you stand on the ON Running shoes? Recently, I tested their Cloudstratus and although I liked them, they come a bit smaller in size I think. The good thing there is you can use them for running AND around the office, if need be :-D Anyways, thanks for you review! I'll consider the Zegamas against the Wildhorse 7 and Terra Kiger 8
@TimGrose
@TimGrose 2 года назад
Yeah I have the opposite problem - very narrow feet and it is bit annoying for me that Nike shoes aren't overly narrow any more! Hopefully however they have now largely found that right balance where nearly everybody can use them. I always think with trail shoes, how wet/muddy is my route going to be and how much road (and/or very firm terrain) is there. If we are just talking Nike then the regular Pegasus 39 has a pretty rugged outsole for a road shoe and all the "trails" I went on testing the Zegama would have been fine in the regular Pegasus (well at least in the current dry conditions) and they do a wide version if need be. In the winter for "off road" I tend to reach for the Peg Trail GORE-TEX that I showed (v3 moment but have had the previous 2 as well) with I imagine the 4th version imminent as the GORE-TEX gives me confidence won't get sodden feet after the first puddle as it were. If you don't think you need the GORE-TEX then just the regular Peg Trail 4 has had decent reviews and I saw them on sale for only £80 at moment. Terra Kiger is "sort of" Nike's racing trail shoe although I never found it that light but I only tried v5 and never seemed much different since. Never had a Wildhorse and was never clear where that really sits - maybe as more an out and out "everyday" trail shoe that is less good on the road than say I found the Zegama to be and the Peg Trail ones I found OK too on the road. Re ON - I feel I ought to try one and never really been tempted. Their racing shoes are reportedly rather firm and one like the Cloudmonster just looks like it wants a wider foot than mine so, in that sense, might work for you although does not sound ideal for your "cross country" routes.

Great to hear your thoughts on these new trail shoes from Nike. Many of us are problem thinking how these compare to Hoka Speed-goat 5 as a long distance trail shoe? Again thanks for the review…

@TimGrose 2 года назад
Thanks for stopping by. Unfortunately I've not had a pair of the Speedgoats so hard to say. Looking at the specs and I see the 5 is 291g in the sample size so I imagine in my size (would be UK 13.5 in Hoka) then probably is going to be similar to the Zegama for me which are 400g in a UK 13. Hopefully another RU-vidr who has a lot more experience in trail shoes will be able to make that comparison.

Throughout this summer's dry conditions I've opted to wear Pegasus 35 Turbos (they've a ZoomX mid sole) off-road. This is because they've done about 500 miles so have lost compression for daily road usage. I've experienced no issues wearing these road shoes across dry farm tracks and fields. Conversely, I wouldn't chose to wear them on a wet and muddy trail and nor would I opt for a heavy shoe as an alternative. Whilst this shoe wouldn't have a place for me, I wonder who Nike have targeted this mega ZoomX shoe for? Or, perhaps maybe it's just a gimmick.
@TimGrose
@TimGrose 2 года назад
Yeah I did loads of miles on "light trails" like old railways in the Turbos and in the winter, if wet & muddy, one of those Peg Trail GTX shoes do a turn (the "first" one aka Peg 36 wasn't too heavy). I have never really "got" the Nike trail line as the Terra Kiger is sort of meant to be the racing one but still is quite heavy and then the Wildhorse & Peg Trail are just like this Zegama and seemingly more "everyday" type shoes for trails. I did question if the use of ZoomX was a marketing device and, for sure, I feel that name sells shoes.
@brokenfreddy7676
@brokenfreddy7676 2 года назад
A heavy trail shoe,especially with high stack,is a good way to remove some old skin..on a real trail with roots and rocks and down trees you will catch up your feet on something as you tire out..for years I've used only hoka speedgoats..all of them plus some of hoka other trail shoes..IMO the worst of them were better than any trail shoe nike ever made..yesterday I raced a very hilly 10k with about 30% asphalt,30% dirt road,40% woods 2 track trail and I used the Salomon S/lab pulsar..6.8oz in my size 9us..great cushioning and fit like a sock..I may have to rethink my choice of speedgoat..it takes at least a 1/2 marathon trail race to find out how a shoe is over the distance..
@TimGrose
@TimGrose 2 года назад
Yeah I got a pair of those S/Lab Pulsar last year and felt like an old school racing flat but with "just enough" cushioning and clearly designed for fast pace trail training and racing. Indeed I believe the shoe Seth used for his two Pikes Peaks wins. OK sure Nike never intended these Zegama to be like them and I did think the Pulsars were a little niche albeit welcome if that is what you are looking for. The Speedgoats seem widely used by trail racers worldwide. Have to admit a shoe have not tried. I have enjoyed the adidas Terrex Speed Ultra for some faster pace trail runs in dry conditions. A good bit lighter and lower to the ground than the Zegama. Again not necessarily what everybody would want/need but I had rather hoped the Zegama was going to be more nimble than it is.
@brokenfreddy7676
@brokenfreddy7676 2 года назад
@@TimGrose I thought the same thing about the pulsar and never really looked into it cos I have very tender bottoms of my feet and can't use most road shoes except the alphafly and Rc elite V2 and adidas adios pro 3 so I was floored when I took a test run in the pulsar..I had no foot issues even on pavement around home..I have not tried them on a 1/2 marathon yet..that's where the real difference shows up for me and up to now only the speedgoat has gone the distance..we don't usually have park runs but I would think a very lite weight shoe with a little traction would be great where you guys race on various types of terrain..

I did a bit of little walking in the Zegama and certainly was comfortable albeit my feet are so relatively narrow the laces were tighter than I would ideally like but probably not a problem for most. Have you tried any of the other Nike Trail shoes like the Peg Trail, Terra Kiger, Wildhorse ? The other shoe I showed (the black one) is the Peg Trail 3 GORE-TEX. That is still "current" as although the regular Peg Trail 4 is out the GORE-TEX version of it is not yet. When I was injured for running I actually did a few wet/muddy walks in the GORE-TEX one and found them ideal for that as did not need to take as much care where I was stepping as it were. Of course if your hikes are in mainly dry conditions, the GORE-TEX probably is a waste of time. The only real difference between the Zegama and the Peg Trail I showed is that the Zegama is just a little softer because of the ZoomX but I would have thought either could work for you. Probably largely depends how comfortable you feel in a shoe and obviously we aren't going to determine that unless you try on a pair.

Yeah when I put on my Dragonfly spikes on for a track mile on Wednesday they will literally be under half the weight of these Zegama so maybe I will get a "lift" as you are "supposed" to wear heavy shoes in training - right ?

@@TimGrose i still got a pair of Brütting Roadrunners with 420 gram from 1964....why should shoes like that cost more than 50 Pound?-----oh i could wear my Hoka Tor winter running boots, they have a similar weight, and we only got heavy snow 2 weeks per year.....even the name Zegama is misleading and suggesting light, nimble, fast technical mountain running shoe

@@justanoldfashionedrunner605 I looked at the times done in the Zegama "Marathon" this year and Kilian Jornet "only" did 3:36 whereas on the flat you kind of imagine could break 2:20. As such hard to think why, even if was Nike sponsored, he would reach for these. On the other hand, Nike don't really do an elite level trail racing shoe.

I watched this stupid cartoon called mob psycho. There were exactly same looking shoes mentioned there and now I got recommended a video with thumbnails of it. Crazy

i real dont understand nike! All the money in the world and can not make a material off good grip or hire real trail designers to make the shoe??? Yeah the trail 2-3 felt fantastic on feet and looked great. But non of that matters if it has ZERO grip.

Yeah that does seem a common complaint. Hard to be sure if the Zegama are any better at the moment in the UK as everywhere is bone dry. They were OK but I would expect any of my shoes to also be OK in such "tame" conditions.

Yeah sort of although you could argue this is the marketing team at their best - putting ZoomX on a shoe and making us all believe it is something different to what is actually a fairly "normal" shoe IMHO.
