This lens lives on my D850 95% of the time. Many say this lens is better than the newer VR version of this lens. Yea it is heavy but the images are worth it

I had the use of the VR version and it’s fantastic in the corners but unfortunately soft in the centre. Maybe it was the particular lens I had but @70mm wide open it was terrible. I’ve seen other reviews where this wasn’t the case.

TheSnapChick I really like that when you do a review it's practical and realistic. While numbers and statistics are important, it's always good to know how an experienced photographer like you feels about a product or a piece of gear. I own the 24-70 mm and use it everyday. It's my favourite Nikkor lens. Thanks Leigh.

I'd say you summed up my thoughts on this very well. I just bought this on May 18th and it is awesome. A bit heavy yes, but I'd rather feel the quality in every snap. :) Thanks for the review and the reassurance. :)

I have been saving up for this lens. Even on my crop sensor 5200 it gives an effective focal length of 36 to 105. Still a pretty killer option and it opens the door to full frame. One of these days I will be able to afford it.

Great review. I have been fortunate enough to have nearly ALL the FX range of Nikons. This 24-70mm F2.8 is, even with all that is at my reach, the most used. It just does what you want. But not for portraits. Here, I would pick up the 85mm F1.4 Prime or the 70-200mm F2.8 zoom depending on the situation. Great job as always SnapChick . Keep making us all smile while you educate us. Kind regards, Mark

The Nikon 24-70 2.8g is a really good lens, but it certainly can be faulted, at least when shooting wide open on the wide end (24mm) or the long end (70mm), you will experience field curvature and softness in the image quality, especially in the corners. Center sharpness is generally good at all focal lengths, but you need to stop down to F4 to begin getting really sharp images with decent corners... So, while it's a really good lens, it is not as good as the Canon 24-70 2.8L ii lens in most respects, though of course it might be the best 24-70 zoom lens for Nikon.

Lots of great similar options out there, but for those who need it the $1900 price tag is well worth a lens that is spectacular across its range AND can focus in near darkness - something it's cheaper competitors (which I've used) can't do. Not for everyone, but pivotal for some.

I just started taking photography so much more seriously because out of nowhere I started getting hired to cover many events. long story short I bought a D750 without a lens and now I'm on the hunt for a great lens that I can use to cover events both in dark clubs and outdoor parties since thats what I normally get hired to do

The 24-70 is my most used lens, it's like a damn swiss army knife. And it is pretty much a body cap on my D810, but that is because I am mainly a journalism photographer. I mean I love my 70-200 and some of my primes, but the 24-70 is just the cats meow and I don't regret the price. I know the Version II is coming out, but I really don't think VR is worth another $600 when this one will go down in history as being a Nikon legendary lens.
@tomhughes5123

yes vr on a 24-70 ( new version) i admit to not missing it on the 24-70g ed . so on the d850 and not wanting crap in your mount/ mirror box get the zoom .. changing primes you will end up seeing crud on your mirror ..( really really bugs me )

I bought this lens all the way back in 2018 or 2019 and I rarely took it off my D750 😂 I remember being hesitant to buy it at first because of the price but I gotta say it was 100% worth it. It’s definitely heavy, but I got a lot of use out of it. Even now when I don’t photograph people like I used to, it’s still perfect for my needs. And now since I do mostly stills, I can have it on a tripod so the heaviness isn’t even an issue anymore.

Never having been shy about changing lenses, I use a 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 55mm and 85mm. They're all faster and they're all sharper. They are NOT, however, as convenient and "ready for action".

I just bought this lens for my D800E... so far I find myself having to take major swings at either ISO or aperture to find good balance. Most occasions I'll shoot a couple shots in Program Mode to get a feel for what the camera thinks is going on than switch to Manual and dial it in from there... I guess what I'm asking is . . . is it common for the program mode shots to be so damn bright. Thanks!

There is a NEW 24-70... with VR and a larger front element among other features. It's available for pre-purchase... I hope you'll pick one up! I'm going to retire the lens you're reviewing here :) all that you say here is still true.. and now, improved :) :) :)

This thing is a brick, good to know that if you were about to get mugged, you can swing this and bash someone's skull in. I've been on the fence about this lens on my D750, but after handling and shooting with it. I decided to use that money towards different lens. 24-85mm VR, 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8, and 70-300VR. I bought all that and still have money left over to spend, well all items were used. That covers just about everything, 24mm is wide enough on an FX body. 24 for landscape, 300 in crop mode for peeping tom stuff.
@cyberathlete
@cyberathlete 8 лет назад
+Vince Phan There is no substitute for a 24-70mm f/2.8 for the purposes it serves. At 2.8 you allow more light, it has sharper optics than the 24-85mm (and trust me you can see the difference in images), and the bokeh is much nicer as depth of field is shorter at 2.8. Also the aperture remains constant at all focal lengths. Your argument is moot and you make no good points. The investment in this lens is worth it especially if you in low light situation and don't want to constantly be changing lenses.
@cyberathlete
@cyberathlete 8 лет назад
+cyberathlete PS I have used many lenses in the Nikon line up and own 8, my point is I used to think I can substitute for the focal length with cheaper lenses and forgo apertures, but the difference is there and once I started using lenses with f/2.8 or lower, I never went back. Except for zoom lenses like 80-400 f/4-5.6 but then again those are not exactly meant for low light photography.

Great informative video. I am an expressionist and I do alot of digital artwork which includes photo manipulation. I love reviewing the Holy trinity that Nikon offers.. and I'm interested in purchasing the 24 - 70... or the 70 - 200.... and a camera body either the d750 or 810.. I will be using the equipment to shoot events... and maybe for some artwork.. I'm also planning on shooting models in setup scenery.... which lens would you recommend for shooting full bodies..... and which of the two full frame cameras do you think is best..? ((I just subscribed to your channel... good job on the screen))

snapchick, I don't know whether you get back to these old videos, but I am undecided about the VR model and the one in this review. I seldom shoot action shots, like sports, so VR is not that important. Does the newer VR model of this lens offer any newer image quality than the G ED model ? Thanks

Thank you for a nice video with practical tips :) ... and here I have a practical question ... which one do I choose: a D750+AF-S 24-120 F4/VR or a D7500+18-140 VR or a D7200+18-140 VR or even a Canon EOS 80D+18-135 IS NANO USM?? I will be using this camera for work related events (fairs, events, shooting autoservicing machines, tools, people, ...) which will be happening indoors with week lighting as well as outdoors and must be good in all weather conditions. Primarily I focus on price-performance, all-round use and build quality and image quality. But I want to be "conservative", and rather buy a good body with "excellent" lenses than vice versa ... so how do I decide wich is good enough that it will not matter if I shoot with a better camera? Where is the line that says that is good enough for the job? So, to recapitulate, if I am not a pro and won't do majestic architecture and vehicle shoots or amazing art portrets of famous people, with medium frame or pro full frame cameras ... when can I say: "Ok, that is just right for me?" ... ... ... and I am an intermediate level user ... for now. Thanks for any advice or tips.

I have the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 VC with my D810, very pleased. However tried the Tamron 24-70mm VC but the my Nikon D810 and D7000 will not recognise any other than the first Tamron lens thats fitted. e.g. The 24-70 shows as 70-200 in Fine Focus adjustment. I can delete the 70-200 then then add the 24-70 and the reverse happens. I cannot afford the £1500 for the Nikon at the moment. Have to make do with 50mm f1.8 and thinking of Sigma 24mm 1.4 Art. I have tried Tamron but they don't seem to have an answer for me. Anybody?

This video is very useful. So thank you first hand. However, I am still in a dilemma whether to buy this lens or the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR. I have a D850 and it is hard to find a comparison video between the two. Which one would you recommend assuming the difference in price is not an issue. The only advantage I know is the 120mm max zoom. Thank you again!

The 24-70mm opens up to a wider aperture, which is helpful in low light situations and for shallow depth of field effects but the 24-120mm has more reach. It really boils down to what is more important to you. You will be able to get great images with both lenses. :)

Arthur A If you’re hand holding then the VR is ideal on the high mpix D850. Even though 24-70 is not exactly telephoto I have concerns often about the shutter speed when using the non VR one on the smaller mpix D810. I would not upgrade to a D850 and expect to get frequent sharp shots with my non VR 24-70. Not unless I keep shutter speed about 4 times focal length. So just try to get a VR lens for hand holding on the D850.

From 1.8 upwards they have the same sharpness. But you buy a 1.4 to shoot at 1.4. At that wide aperture sharpness is heavily controlled by your lighting conditions. In the studio its deadly sharp all day. Out in the field can be hit and miss. I have both lenses both great, if never feel the need for 1.4 save your money. I did feel the need and love it.
