Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm F4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR Lens Review

Jennifer Cogswell The AF-S 70-300mm F4.5-5.6G VR is a "FX" (on D700 as seen in the video/D3/D4/D810/D750 etc) and "DX" (D3x00, D5x000, D7x00) compatible lens, it even works on some old 35mm film SLR cameras too.

The lens will work with the D5000. Sharpness and bokeh wise the lens it okay, but not wonderful. Then again there aren't an lenses with this zoom range, or price, that offer anything better.

I do not recall hearing secondary clicks, other than when it stops after the picture is taken.

Balaji G On a budget, it's one of the best options. It should work fine with any D5xxx camera.

Having only used the 70-300 VR I cannot definitively say which is better. My guess, is that both are very close, as is typical for these consume grade lenses. The best out of focus renditions will come with subjects that are a good distance from the background at 200-300mm.

+Jackson Tan It could be good for those things, depends on how you want to take the photos. Realistically it's still a little on the short side for the moon, but it will do alright with some cropping. A good tripod is still a must though. As for sunsets, any lens could be good for that, depends on the scene and how you want to photograph it.

It mounts and works on all Nikon DX and FX bodies released to date. On a DX body it will be functionally a DX lens as far as the camera is concerned.

The 70-300mm VR is best suited to bright conditions, or on a tripod. I haven't used it in a night-club setting, so I cannot say for sure, but I don't think it would be great unless a flash was used.

This would NOT be a good lens in low light situations like a night club or nightlife events. The aperture is just not wide enough. Also 70-300 would be a little long for such close "face to face" conditions. I would recommend the nikon 35mm f 1.8 for what you are looking to do. You can pick one up brand new for about $200 or so. Hope that helps :-)

Thanks for all the feedback and yes I does help. I do have a 35mm f1.8 and it does work well in low lighting, I have also found out the hard way that the 7--300mm it NOT good for low-lighting, so all comments were right on point and I sincerely Thank all whom responded

Rose Dawkins If you have the $$$ and really need a fast tele for your work have a look at the 70 - 200 f2.8. It is heavy and expensive but it would work well in low light. Peace.

I never shot any motorsports with this lens, by the time shot night sports I was using F2.8/F4 lenses, but from shooting other outdoor action, I can say that it should be fine for that during the day. There really isn't a lot out that you can buy new for under $1700-$2000 that will do well at night or in poorly lit indoor situations. For that you ideally want lenses with larger F2.8 apertures. If night and poorly lit indoor is that what you are facing, a used Nikon AF 80-200mm F2.8D (final generation of that type) if your camera supports screw driven lenses (should be less than $900), or a first generation 70-200mm F2.8G ($1000-$1400) or first generation Tamron SP 70-200mm f2.8 Di VC USD ($800-1000) would be a better choice if you can save for one of them. Even those can struggle in poorer light, but they would do a lot better than the 70-300mm G VR lens under those conditions.

+Amr Badran From what I've heard they are almost on par. Some reviews give the edge to Nikon, and another the Tamron. I've never used the Tamron, so I cannot give a honest evaluation there of. Which ever one you can get for less would be my choice.

+Adrian Roth At that price point, you would be limited to the Nikon 55-300mm VR. Not a bad lens for the price, and is better than the cheaper third party zooms in that range.

For the price, the 70-300mm VR is a good lens. Is it worth getting? If that is the best that you can afford, sure. Is it worth more than the 55-300mm VR? I've only used the latter in a camera store, I didn't think it was that bad, and for more people it's likely good enough and only the most picky people will notice the difference.. The 70-300mm VR is, more expensive, bigger, and heavier, if those things matter at all to you. On the plus side, it focuses a little faster.

What lens(es) do you have now? The 18-55mm VR kit? Do you want something that goes well with what you have, or something that will replace and still cover more range? If you want something that will complement a 18-55mm VR, consider the 55-300mm VR, it's a nice light weight compliment of similar build quality and does a good job for travel photography. If you are looking for something that will cover a wide range, without having to swap lenses, you may wish to consider one of the 18-140mm or 18-300mm type lenses.

***** All AF-S lenses will create some sound in video if you use the onboard microphone. The only way to avoid sound from the camera in video is to use an external microphone or recording device.
