This a great source of information. As retired professional as user of Nikons since the 70s I learned things about the camera because I do what I do seldom branch out. i bought when the first came out and my D800 was in Nikon for repair and have loved shooting with it. The video is great. Nikon virtually remade my D800 which i had dropped shooting tennis with my 70-200 2.8 which as you know is a monster. My favorite lens for shooting anything but sports is the 24-70 2.8 with this body and I dropped it and off to Nikon it went. It became a new lens back form the factory. Thanks for your presentation.

This is just the review I was looking for. I've been considering the D780 as an upgrade to my D750. Initially I was leaning towards the Z6II, but having to get the FTZ adapter and not being sure if my non Nikkor glass is fully supported, I came back to considering the D780. Also, and despite the smaller coverage area, I'm well used to how the AF works over the viewfinder when shooting action, usually motorsport. Also, the AF in liveview will be a great improvement for my tripod/landscape photography. Your video really helped to assure the assumptions I had coming from some 3 ou 4 extensive reviews in written form. Thank you. 👍

Tremendous job as always MH. This is a splendid upgrade to the D750! The biggest difference between Mirrorless and DSLR is size and that factor is narrowing, DSLR can be smaller and Mirrorless are getting bigger. There is room for both systems.

Most comprehensive and objective review seen up to now. Thank you very much. Even though I'm still very happy with the performance of the D750, I see this as my next camera. Mostly because of the 1/8000 sec which is helpful with fast primes in day time, as I currently live in a quite sunny region. And of course for the full compatibility with AF-D lenses which I still love to use. Not the sharpest, but travel-friendly, affordable and with that nice unique character. Perfect for a hobbyist like me. The future is certainly ML, but thanks to Nikon it seems I can postpone to some years later the expense of a complete system switch.

@@MaartenHeilbronyou're welcome :) Yes, ND filters are what I use today. But you know, different lenses with different diameters.. I find myself with several filters in the bag and as a hobbyist which shoots mainly travelling I like to keep things easy and quick. Thank you again!

Certainly the D750 is STILL a formidable camera. I wish that Nikon had made a variation of the Z6 that had a better F to Z mount adapter, one that would have an AF motor in the adapter that could drive AF D lenses from Nikon.

Excellent review along with very useful settings and tips (without any bull) - one of the best I've seen in yonks. Quick question on Video - did you use an external mic / record ? and did it pick up any lens whirling / winning as it kept / reacquired focus.

Glad you enjoyed it, always nice to hear from an appreciative viewer. I did use an external mic (I only ever use internal mics for guide track or background ambience). Yes, the lens motors (on this lens anyway) are loud enough to be picked up by the internal mics.

Another interesting and informative video. As a D750 owner myself , I can say that the still images from the D780 don't look any better than those I can create on my D750. But video , especially video auto-focus is greatly improved. Video is a really plus-point for the D780. Here in the UK, the £2199 Body-Only price is too expensive for my budget. Also, given that the Sony A7 III , with 24-70 lens , is £1899, it does make the D780 look less than competitive. But the huge number of lenses available for any Nikon F-Mount camera is certainly a massive plus point. I am very interested in the D780. But I am going to wait a couple of years, until good quality D780s are available on the used market for a fraction of the new price. Many thanks for a great video !!!

Another very interesting an informative video. The D780 is certainly a very competitive camera when compared to the Nikon D500 , Z6, Z7 and various Sony and Canon mirrorless cameras. I had not considered the D780 when looking for my next camera body. As a Nikon DSLR user myself, the D780 may be exactly what I am looking for. Please keep up the good work !! As a matter of interest, I know that you produced a very good specialist "Video Settings for the D500" RU-vid video. It would be very interesting to see such a video for this camera ??

I am a first time viewer of your RU-vid channel, and I have subscribed. I enjoyed your breakdown of the d780 -- lots of informative and relevant information. I would like to make one suggestion. You tend to skip from one shooting menu to another which makes your presentation a bit difficult to follow. For future videos, you might want to stay with one menu at a time.

Thanks for the kind words and the subscription. First, it is a review, not a tutorial, and I tend to group the settings into topics using a task-oriented approach. The concept of just walking through the menu time by item - even though it seems to make sense at a high level - is not really interesting to me. If that's what you need - there's the manual which is organized in that manner.

Hi Marteen, thanks for the nice and detailed review. One thing, at 12:00 you stop the shutter speed at 30sec. As far as I know it goes to 900sec. Am I wrong?

That's as slow as it can be set in M. Longer durations are available in timer and bulb. I should have mentioned those are limited to 15 minutes.

Very informative video. Did you get a chance to check flash compatibility with D780? I have heard with most flashes, it gives over exposed photos.

I did not. If you feel the images are over-exposed, have you tried using a diffusing filter? Pointing the flash a little higher, or a little to one side of your subject? Have you adjusted the flash compensation? There must be lots of ways to compensate for this.

Thanks for reviewing D780. It will help me decide if Im getting a unit. How do you focus or what mode, if you take the camera in vertical orientation and eyes of the subject is beyond the focusing area. Camera is NOT in live view. I'm use to take photos the old fashion way - in the viewfinder. Any tips. I usually hit and miss on this.

I'm not sure by what you mean "beyond the focussing area". I would use the centre focus point and use the focus with a soft press, compose and snap method.

@@MaartenHeilbron I meant if you are composing your shot in vertical way, in your view finder you are limited to focus within the focusing area of the view finder. What if the eyes of your subject is beyond that area. sometimes its in focus but sometimes its not. Do you have any tips in focusing accurately? Thank you in advance

I wonder if Nikon plans a D880, as in a D850 that gets a similar treatment as the D750 got. I for one prefer F mount until Nikon offers a better selection of Z lenses, and don’t mind the larger body size, but do really appreciate the improved live-view focus features. I do like an EVF, but not so much that I’m willing to live with a limited lens selection unless I want to tote the FTZ adapter. I also appreciate the ability to continue to use Nikon’s plethora of stellar lenses from past decades, which the F mount provides. Yes, I think I could be happy with a D880.

Thanks for that beautiful review. One point I am confused. You are saying (12.06) shutter speed from 1/8000 to 30 seconds. Then bulb and timer comes. But on paper it says that D780 has shutter speed up to 900 seconds. Would you please explain that point, how it works up to 900 seconds ?

Sorry, I didn't include the extended shutter speeds which are available in manual and activated as custom setting D6. When On, that allows settings from 60 seconds up to 15 minutes.

As a Nikon D750 owner, I am very interested in the D780. I use my D750 to shoot stills and to record video. As the video-autofocus on the D750 varies between poor to non-existent, I use manual focus and higher F-Stop numbers on the Aperture. (EG Typically I shoot F1.4 to F3.5 for stills. But for video I shoot F5.6 to F8). This means that the low-light video , that the D750 produces, has lots of noise. I am hoping that the video-autofocus on the D780 will be good enough for me to shoot video at F3.5 and below, instead of F8 ???

Although it's an improvement, you may continue to be disappointed, as it sounds like you have very high expectations, particularly for video. My recommendation for video is to use manual focus as much as possible.

I am thinking about going full frame as I now have a better understanding of photography. My trouble is which choice should I make. I quite like the d780 as it is an improvement over the d750 and nikon always knew what they were doing with dslrs. On the other hand the future is in the mirrorless side but I am not sure yet about the current options. Either way it would mean investing a large amount of money to achieve this switch and I am not sure which way I should go. Any insights? I would really like to hear your thoughts.

First, I'd ask what advantage you expect full frame will provide. Then to ask which camera features are most important to you. Although I've not yet had the chance to review it, I suspect the Z6 II (although it will require new lenses) may be your best investment for the long term.

@@MaartenHeilbron regarding the advantage I’d gain is that full frame sensors are best suited for astrophotography and for landscape photography. Ideally a z7 would be preferable but its price is off limits. With the bigger mp count I would be able to print bigger than I currently print. However the current options on the mirrorless side are just ok. Nikon hasn’t come up with any outstanding products yet the way it did with the D850. The z6ii and z7ii offer marginal improvements that should have been issued with the cameras in the first place. Also the new lenses are quite expensive but I guess with an ftz adapter you can use the old trusted nikon lenses. I guess I should wait to see if anything better comes up later on. So far I am getting a half baked feeling from nikon regarding the mirrorless offers.

@@marieta.s For astrophotography in particular, you're right to identify full frame as providing an advantage - both in terms of detail and low light. I'm not sure I agree with you on the mirrorless models - I think the Z7 (haven't reviewed the II yet) is a pretty spectacular camera - certainly the equal of the D850 in terms of image quality, and in some cases, depending on the lens, the superior, particularly for small pin points of light in the darkness.

Maarten, When you were shooting video (from 20:45 onwards) what settings did you use for auto focus please ??? I have recently purchased the Nikon D780. When I shoot "selfie" video, the auto-focus seems to be "almost but not quite !!" The video is around 80-90% focused , but needs some alteration. The autofocus does not seem to quite get full focus. Any ideas / suggestions would be very much appreciated. Many thanks

Are you closer than the lens's closest focus distance? Either way, I would recommend that you use manual focus in any situation (like a selfie) where you distance to the camera is not changing.

The camera switches on OK, but none of the buttons (EG Menu, Playback etc..) are responding and the back-screen remains blank at all times. But luckily several photographer friends have recommended a good camera repair company. So fingers crossed for this. Please keep up the good work and the great videos on your channel !!

Hey Maarten, thanks for the review! One of the biggest drawbacks to using the D750 for sports was its buffer. If I understand correctly - the D780 is limited at 100 shots per burst, but how fast does the buffer clear after those 100 shots? Can you simply take your finger off the shutter for a brief moment, then hit it again for another 100?

Nice that you let us hear how noisy or quiet the different shutter modes are. But did you really? To me, apart from the silent mode, they all just sounded unpleasantly noisy compared to my 90D. But then I do tend to use it with a lens attached which I'm sure dampens the noise considerably. I assume Nikon users do the same. Speaking of the 90D, did I miss your review? I can’t find one. By the way, I think candlelight is about 1500˚ Kelvin. So the only way to get there is with a custom WB. (Or, as I did in the film era, with stacked KB filters adding up to KB 35 which will degrade the image quality as well as swallow at least four and a half stops of light).

Yes, I agree, it's only worthwhile on a comparative basis. I'm really just poking fun at silent. And it is a fairly noisy shutter. With a lens attached? Interesting! Have not had the opportunity to review the 90D. Canon Canada is being somewhat unresponsive. I'll keep at it. Yes, in that range (about 1800 is what I usually get) Not all custom WB (not one of Nikon's strong suits) can get a good reading that low., so sometimes just best to go with 2500 (that is the usual bottom end of K settings) and accept that the difference makes it look like candle light. Too white and it's not right for the tone/mood.

I know the D780 is not as capable as the D500/D850 in terms of focus tracking, particularly for wildlife/bird photographers. However, I read that the camera has some D5 focus algorithms in it, so I assume it is a capable focusing camera. I cannot find one review where someone has used it or tested it against a D500/D850--how do YOU think it stacks up to these cameras for dealing with wildlife/birds?

I unfortunately dropped my D7200 and insurance paid for the D780. It’s a big step up but you can still use the DX lenses. The sensor is much bigger so you get a lot more detail in your photos and the 4K video means your videos will be much better. It’s taking me a while to get to know the camera, but it has so many great features. It’s definitely worth the upgrade and it’s a pro camera so you’ll be able to see that there’s a reason for the label; it gives you the best of the 7 series cameras as well as the Z series. A great purchase.

The last gasp for survival from DSLR companies, if they still want this product line to thrive, are a couple features. Number one in my list is IBIS. Number two is Full frame DSLR in the D5600/T7i body size complete with dials in the front and back, with a hard, and very light aluminum body. Third, All the mirrorless features such as eye autofocus, and at least 8fps in live view mode. Swing to side tilting screen should be standard, and battery grip port should also be standard.
