Mr Simmons, Such a good and thorough review. I was looking for comparison between these 2 camera, though my concern is more to do with the big difference in size than the cost. I plan to watch to a couple more times to have everything sink in, but want to express my great appreciation first. Also your style is very genuine / authentic and I really appreciate that as well. Really looking forward to more videos from you . Again, thanks so much.
I'm a new subscriber. I just purchased the P900 and I'm looking forward to playing with it. I want to learn as much as I can before using it. My father has the P1000 and I'm going to try and show him that I can do just as well as he and hopefully even better. Thanks for your time and video.
@Fifth category Hurricane I didn't say that it's twice as expensive. I said it is a little more expensive. Please do your own research. I'm not going to give you reasons why because I'm not the one buying it.
Whitie in Vermont , may I know the reason why you prefer the P1000? I'm torn between P950 and P1000, the reason is the weight for travel, also, shooting in concert, games they may not let me shoot with P1000?
@@jimbo3609 I have a like new p1000 for sale with lots of accessories (tripod, filters, magnification, case, 4 batteries, and more!) Please reach out if you're interested!
Many thanks, Dale. You have such an affable, cheerful. warm character and a wonderful presentation style. I've been happily using the P900 since 2017 as I was mainly using it for stills. Now I want to start doing videography. so the P1000 seems more versatile as it shoots in 4K but crucially also has an auxiliary microphone input. It also has the benefit of a hot-shoe mount for flash or other attachments. I didn't like the idea of the offset Whitworth screw mount on my P900 but it hasn't proven to be an issue as I use it with Manfrotto QR plates. It's a pity the IR remote for the Nikon P900 can't be used with the P1000, and it now requires a separate transmitter and receiver attachment: that is a retrograde step. The battery system has changed too: the P900 uses EN-EL23 that is good for 360 stills, whereas the P1000 uses EN-EL20a which is only good for 250 shots. Both batteries offer around 1 hour 20 minutes video recording in the respective cameras. It is though disappointing that each video session is limited to 30 minutes on the P1000. Maybe Nikon will rectify this on the successor, as the P1000 has been around for almost three years now. Maybe they should also look at a decently sized image sensor instead of the 1/2.3"
A very comprehensive review, better then any others, thank you sir. I'm just checking out the P900 and P1000 for a friend who has disabilities and was thinking of either one of these as his next camera. 🙂
I have disabilities, which made it increasingly difficult for me to use and carry around my Pentax K200D and lenses, etc. I bought the P900 second-hand from a friend in 2017. Since having it, I've never used my Pentax. The P900 is lighter than the Pentax and its size sits well in the hand but just be warned, it's bulkier and heavier than most bridge cameras. The P1000 is bigger and heavier still.
@@johnmichaelrichards thanks. My friend eventually did choose the P900 and seems very happy with it. When I want a new bridge camera, I'm going to stick with another Panasonic one, as they are pretty good too and the ones I have my eye on have CMOS sensors now, plus good 4K video and frame capture and much more optical zoom then my 600mm on my Panasonic DMC-FZ45. I got a DSLR too, but I will always keep a bridge camera for its extra focal length and speed of getting it out and zoomed out when you're in a rush to capture something moving.
great review I bought my 900 maybe back in 2017 and im by no means a photographer ,still learning how to use this one lol but I think im keeping my 900 only because I still have an awful lot to learn about how to use this one, hell this is the first time ive taken it out today since last xmas and I was looking on utube to refresh my memory on how to bring up the the damn menu and other things on the 900,came across your video ,you did a great job on your comparison ,guess I got to get out and use this more thanks for the video ,real pro
hdbagger4266 I used my 900 for quite a while. It’s a pretty nice camera with its limitations being a bridge cam. But in the kayak it does a great job. Thanks for watching.
First off, Thank You for your service sir. Next, I appreciate the comparison between the P900 and P1000, as I was on the fence, but after watching your video, it helps me sway to the P1000. Thank you.
What a nice video! I enjoyed it a lot and you provide valuable and easy to follow information. You seem such a nice person. Thanks for the review and greetings from Costa Rica.
Very fair review! My first bridge camera was a Nikon L830 and although it has far fewer features I fell in love with it's simplicity and zoom. When the P900 was announced I knew I'd have to have one. 3 years in and no regrets! One has to take internet reviews with a grain of salt but I have to say you did fine job.
I'm surprised by the comment about lack filter rings. I've had m P900 Coolpix for several years (brought in the UK) and have used filters regularly. I can also use a lens hood when necessary, all using the 67mm ring. My main gripes about a lock of a hot shoe for off-camera flash.
Thank you! Finally a good comparison video. Being a college student struggling with money I wasn't sure if getting the p1000 would be worth it, but I will do my best to save for it. It seems like a better camera (although as a beginner I may just go with the p900)
If you kayak, you own a P1000, and you haven't tried to measure the point of curvature of earth/boats go over horizon, with blind eye vs bringing them back multiple times with the cameras? You are either a flat earther, or a gatekeeper...Or MISSING OUT on the reality of what you can PROVE for yourself. Mr. D knows this, and he uses military measures, like an angle finder to measure distance and that cannot work with R value, it has to be 90degree angle. This is actually very decent review of the cameras. But the main purpose of these are the max zoom, and they both seem to do a good job. If you use this for multi use...He is absolutely right, the P1000 would be worth the difference. If just using it for the zoom, and seeing atmospheric conditions far out, and doing some moon shooting, just get the P900
Absolutely fantastic video! You covered all the points. I’m debating whether I should buy the p900 or p1000. I have the B500 but it doesn’t go far enough for birds. When you’re in your kayak, do you still use a tripod for either camera? Can you get sharp pictures hand holding the p1000?
At 2:20 I understood you to say, "no filters and no lens hood'' for the the P900. I think that would be a deal breaker for me. I want to do astro-photography and the lens hood helps reduce the glare. The screw on filters I use to protect the lens from scratches etc..... Excellent presentation! Thank you for sharing this video.
Thanks! The video has so many details that solve my question about the difference between p900 and p1000. I've been thinking about buying a camera to take wildlife photos, and p1000 must be a good choice!
Very true. Great video and I can’t wait to get my hands on one. Oh the look on the faces of people at the beach when you talk about the boats going over the hump as it were and then you zoom in and they don’t know what to say!!! Many have had to at the very least ask some hard questions that Scientism can’t answer.
I have the P900 for something like 4 years now. I shot just more than 33,000 pictures with so far and no, zero problems. Mostly birding and other wildlife photos. I still love it with it's shortcomings and all. If the P1000 "Birdwatching" setting is at all like that of the P900, I will ignore it completely. I might do centre light sampling but not centre focusing, and for small birds sitting in-between branches on the other side of a tree or other obstacle, it struggle to focus on that small bird. I mainly use "P" - Programmed Auto where you pre-program the settings where you would if you used manual and that works for me. That is what "Birdwatching" setting is, but with my own priorities. Try it, is works. In difficult situations where "P" does not work well, I would change to some manual or other setting according to the situation.
@@muhammadaditya5605 I keep track of the photo nr as designated by the camera. It counts from 0001 to 9999 and then starts again from 0001. I know there is another way as well but I cannot remember what it is.
I own a p1000 and I love it you can see the Moon footages on my chanel If you don't have a p900 guy's you get p1000 there's a lot more in p1000 Thanks for your video 👍
Mr D can you get a daytime photo of the international space station? It’s orbit schedule is on the nasa site I’m just curious what it looks like from the ground.
Enjoyed the video. Was wondering if you ever purchased nikon's red dot sight system for the p1000 for tracking. I'm waiting on reviews of the p950 to come out ..then I'll decide between the 950 or the 1000...Living in Charleston sc thier is alot of great visual perspectives to shoot... thank you this was informative
Thank you so much for a most informative, easily understood comparison. Could you expound on two points concerning P900? First, you mention adding a lens support ring. Which lens support ring do you use? Secondly, you mention that soft focus images are easily and adequately sharpened in post production. How is this accomplished?
David Stanich support ring watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MoyXQnuT-Oc.html Now for the sharpen. I use Lightroom and use the clarity slider. Thanks for watching
Mr. D!! Please receive my respect to you. I used to have a P-900 then I bought the P-1000. Nikon has now the P-950, that has the features of P-1000 with the size of P-900. Thanks for your review!
I have p900 and love it! Took photos of moose, elk, eagles, black/grizzly bears, wolves etc etc even wolverine! Quality is good for my 13 Facebook friends! Lol I hike long distances without worries about dropping it…..if I do I’ll buy another one! Lol great videos you make! Thanks!
Thank you for the comparison video, very well done. The tripod you were using for the p1000 looks very sturdy. i was wondering what kind it is and approximately the weight of it.
First time watching one of your video's. It was a very well thought out and informative video. I have two P900s and had a P1000 but with my tremors the P1000 just wasn't a good fit for me. The size and weight was too much for me. Again great video. Best wishes Duane
That I understand. The P1000 is a beast. They say the P950 is a good upgrade for the P900. Some good upgrades but kept the 2000mm max. Thanks for watching
Sorry. I read your reply and accidentally removed it when I hit the wrong button when trying to respond, but I did read your response. Firstly, thank you for the kudos, as it is very important to respond to all my viewers, unless it’s a troll, LOL. So to answer your question; yes I use the P900 and P1000 in my kayaking adventures. Neither of these cameras were given to me for review. Out of pocket purchases. Thank you again
@@DaleMrDSimmons Not a problem I appreciate the response. Glad to know you use them and werent just testing them. I use my P900 for far away wildlife shots, when I take photos for the local fire department if I need to be farther away for safety, for moon shots, and sunset/sunrise.. The only issue for me is it seems the P900 doesnt reproduce reds very well. When taking stills I could have what appears to be a full red or orange setting and to get close to the color I have to shoot about - 3/4 exposure compensation and even then I'll have yellow in the sun. Just kind of frustrating for me. Obviously it doesn't perform well in low light but I accept that and use it for its strengths. Thanks again for the reply.
@@DaleMrDSimmons Mr D I'd like to hear your thoughts or suggestions. I have two P900s and sent the best condition and less used to Nikon to be repaired. Minor repairs and only going to cost $200. A few days ago my other one the lens gears must be jammed as the lens is stuck out at 2,000mm and Ive tried everything to retract but it wont. Im thinking if I send this to Nikon for them to repair that and other issues it has its going to be a lot higher than the other repair. Lets say its going to cost $300 would I be better putting that towards a P950? Best wishes Duane
Well that’s the gamble I took from the P900 to P1000 and the P950 wasn’t out yet. Didn’t like the P1000 just too big. So I sold the P1000 and bought the P950 when it came out. Very satisfied with the P950.
@@najeelas also accordingly to Nikon rumours about p4000 with 200x or more and p900 could upgrade to 125x by firmware version something like that so 😂👈💵
Dale, I'm torn between P1000 & P950 right now. I worry about the weight for travel with P1000, but then I might regret the extra 1000 reach? What is your opinion?
Have been a Nikon user since i started and like yourself have all the crazy 600mm F4 stuff that has become too heavy for me. So with the P900 i set off on venture with a bridge camera. I call it my super zoomer. Incredible detail at great distances. My question is i cant see through the viewfinder or screen in bright conditions. Ive ordered a velcro wrap around lens hood for the flip our screen and wondered if you new of any thing else that is on the market that could help. Was i right in thinking you mentioned a butterfly hood which came with the P1000 for this problem. Its been a great surprise, to see so many keepers when i get home to review the shots which as far as new when i was in the field appeared ready for the trash can. Kind regards John from UK.
Mr. D, sir. Excellent comparison which is what i was looking for as I decide on which model to buy. Here is the thing, I owned DSLR with the lenses, etc and gave all that up because they were bulky, inpractical when being on vacation, etc. I am planning a trip to Iceland and budget is an issue so i was thinking of getting a used P900. Should i trash the idea and save some more to buy the bigger brother? Any feedback is MUCH appreciated. Thanks.
@@DaleMrDSimmons , didn't know there are a p950. I have seen used p900 for $250 so that kind of reels me in to weighting in on the decision. But i'll certainly keep on looking and especially for that p950. That P1000 when you were holding it seemed pretty big. Just like any good DSLR. Thanks and keep on shooting..
Too bad they couldn't improve the image quality a bit. Didn't expect the excellent results as my D810 or D850, but I did expect more than I got. Still, worth the price.
Nice comparison Mr Simmons my question is since both cameras having very tiny sensors same as as mobiles does it worth buying any since you cant enlarge the image due to poor sensor?
Hi Mr D, Thank your for your great video. I already own a P900 and was considering upgrading. There is something entrancing about a new camera! but watching your very detailed and practical video made me think that, at least in the first instance, I will work on improving my range of skills, technique and speed with the P900. I wonder if you might be able to give me any pointers on a particular area or skill that I struggle with. I mainly do bird photography. Often I can see the bird without the camera, then I can see it in wide screen but when I go to zoom in, I kind of lose it, and have to zoom out again to find it, of course this takes a lot of time and the bird may have gone. I usually use the viewfinder, but am going to experiment with the screen. Im worried that if I got a camera with a longer lens, this may be more of a problem. Any suggestions or comments?
jenny Hartman That is a standard problem using a big lens. Use the snap zoom switch on the side of the lens. That is what I do when i loose a subject and it works well. Be it understood, the P900 performs horrible for any in flight shots.
In case anyone is still having this issue, the snap zoom button is definitely useful for this. Practice is also useful. What I usually do is start out at 1/2 or 1/4 of the way zoomed in, so that what my left (naked eye) sees is similar to what the right eye sees. This makes it very easy to interpret where the subject is in the image in the viewfinder. Maybe this is just practice, having used high-powered zoom compact cameras for almost 20 years, but I often (about half the time) find that I can be fully zoomed in and find a bird, so long as *both* my eyes are open. I'm not sure how this helps, I guess my brain is doing something subconsciously that helps me locate it. (It might help to try using a monocular for practice, as then you're practicing the skill without being limited by the camera's viewfinder resolution.) If the bird is moving a lot though, I can't keep up, and generally lean on the snap zoom function a lot. However, for the P900 (and most of the older super-zooms I've tried), poor focusing on birds in flight is a huge problem. I probably don't need to say it, but evidently, you're not going to find the bird if the picture is so blurry that the bird is gone. Unfortunately, if the sky is clear, its not always obvious if the focus is correct or not. I find the solution is almost always to zoom out, refocus, zoom in, focus, shoot. And yes, this almost always results in the bird getting away! (Though useful if something is circling.) My go-to method for birds in flight is actually to zoom out slightly. Much easier even at 75% zoom, because the autofocus is much worse at full zoom. But as Mr. D, says, the camera certainly isn't optimal for flying birds. (Being unable to resist the urge to go to 100% zoom is my number one demon right now.) One big reason I'm looking to get a P1000 is the manual focus ring, so I can leverage big zoom without losing the majority of my pictures to the somewhat disappointing full-zoom autofocus.
Geo Geo I would recommend the Induro Tripods CLT203 No. 2 Stealth Carbon Fiber Tripod. It’s a very stable tripod. Make sure you get a good head for it. Thanks for watching.

Saint Tos For portraiture I would not recommend the P1000 basically because of its limitations in Fstop. Can it be done? Yes but you would be sacrificing bokeh like you get with a lens with either a 1.2 or 1.4. I hope that answers your question.
Thanks for this very interesting Video. I have a question. What is the minimum distance on 2000 mm? I hope it is 5 m or lower. Because the P900 has 5m. 7m on 3000 mm is about the same magnification of 2000 mm @5m.
