Nikon Z 8 and Z 800mm f/6.3: Bird Photography at Point Pelee National Park in Canada

In this video I take you through some of the photos that I took with the Nikon Z 8 and the Z 800mm f/6.3 lens on my latest trip to Point Pelee National Park during bird migration season.

The Z 8 and Z 800mm combination was much lighter, which translated to better long walks. The autofocus of the Z 8 was fantastic at picking up the eyes of small birds in trees. I did have issues with it during the hotter days where we had heat waves affecting the ability to auto focus on the small birds.
It was a great trip where I came back with more photos of colourful birds in trees. Let me know how you like my photos!

The Z 800mm isn't meant to be used in really low light depending on what it is you're photographing. Things that need fast shutter speeds will need more light despite the Z 8's high ISO capabilities.

Thank you for all your videos -they are so helpful… i have this same setup… 800 + Z8 . I noticed you shoot a fast shutter for the photos in this video . Generally 1/2000 or 1/1600. Seems like handholding you just need the extra speed to knock out any movement. I initially was trying 1/800 … and wasnt getting the sharpness/ crispness I preferred…. Do u have any thoughts to add ? Thank you! Love your videos !

Thanks Bernie. For many of those bird photos I’m tracking them as they move around in the tree. They move pretty quickly and sometimes just fly away hence the fast shutter speed. Even at 1/1000 I found the wings of birds blurred as they flew around in the tree. And yes handholding will require a faster speed, not to mention I always err on the faster side just to be sure. If you think you can be still enough at 1/800 then that’s great! If not then gradually increase shutter speed until you get acceptable sharpness.

I am a bit surprised how noisy/grainy your photos are even at lower ISO...

Any particular photo you're referring to? RU-vid isn't always the greatest in showing still photos. Some are crops as well, which may emphasize the existing grain, and most of these photos-if not all-have only been lightly denoised in Lightroom and are not run through any denoising program like Topaz, which many people use in their bird photos.
