I keep saying AFF 🙈 what I mean is auto area AF not AFF.

Barry haven't seen you in awhile. Great to see you back again! The autofocus is improved, I'd still like to see it better but it's pointed in the right direction. I think all the new cameras are going to be in the Z 9 class of autofocus. But this is good! Again great to see you.

Again, a very nice tuto on Z6ii AF, thank you sharing your experience. My experience is not as optimistic however. I tried street photo with Z6ii (V1.4)+Z70-200/F/8 in mode A, af-c, af-on, auto iso min 1/250sec, auto area people and i was very disapointed, nothing on display while runners, people,... were so contrasty from background. I needed to wait people are quite close to see (or not) a yellow box on face or eye but i didn't have head-feet view but belly-head view, useless. So, very dispaointed by V1.4 for eye detection compared to sony, canon or my iphone 12 pro max. So, i tried the subject tracking following your previous tips and tricks keeping it at center and turn camera,... and pressing continuously af-on while tracking subject and press shutter button and yes, it works fine, at least much better than wide-l, eye detection but : - when i locate it on a face, it often moves to the body, edges of face,... when subject or me are moving so afraid it culd loose the subject - very often the yellow box, well on subject face, jumped to a bush, wall or tree For street photo single point remains my way to go and for ducks as you shooted, not moving fast, i would hesitate between dynamic and subject tracking for best focus. In fact, I always wonder how subject tracking focuses. On a face, should the eye be sharp or the noze in term of its depth of field ? I would be very interested by more tutorials on street photo, skaters,...

@BarryMountford 2 года назад
Hi Marc thanks! I plan on heading out for some street photography so I will cover that in an upcoming video, I have used both the dynamic area af and subject tracking and I find both useful although I prefer the subject tracking as I can compose the image better. I always find though when using full AFF it works better if the subject is in the Center of the frame.

As a happy nikon Z/F shooter, it's only subject tracking from last generation if you are selecting the object. I'm cool with it, but these days mirrorless subject tracking includes detection, which you did have in your vid at times but we all know is behind competition --- as tracking will often select the head and not the eye.

Programming one of the front buttons to switch to DX mode is awesome. I'm going to do that. I have a 150-600 for birds and that'll make it like 900. That usually crop my photos and posts anyway
@GuitarTherapy144
@GuitarTherapy144 9 месяцев назад
It wont make it a 900. Its a 600 with less field of view. If i make you play basketball with a small ball will it make you a taller player? No. Stick to fullframe usage.

Barry I've yet to buy a Z camera Im still using my D750. Do you have much trouble with dust on the sensor. I was planning on waiting to see if the Z8 would have the sensor cover like the Z9.
@BarryMountford

Hi Mark, no more than I did when shooting in the D750, I would prefer having the sensor protected when changing lenses though! Hopefully this year we will see that in a new model 🤞

Sir, in 04.46 . I try assign this tracking on fn2 button. But when i press it, nothing showed up. Same thing in fn1 . When i assign any other feature. These button works just fine
@chrisguli2865

Currently, focus tracking only works in three AF area modes - animal eye detect, human eye detect and dynamic area af (full frame coverage) - make sure your AF area is on one of these settings otherwise focus tracking is not enabled. Hopefully, Nikon changes this to include all of the AF area modes and also they should add bird eye detect as well!

I wish there was a way to lock in focus tracking without having to press the OK button on the back. I wish there was a way to lock in focus tracking by pressing the FN1/FN2 buttons, or the AF-ON button since I use BB AF. Perhaps they can add this in the next firmware update, or am I missing something?
@BarryMountford
@BarryMountford 6 месяцев назад
Yes assign the fn button to select subject tracking but you can only do that in AFF
@solarsailor55
@solarsailor55 2 года назад
I'm confused (easily done). On several occasions you refer to Full Time AF, but that setting is just available in movie mode and when taking stills the only options are AF-S and AF-C. Judging from the behaviour of the focus 'squares' during the sequence where you're not using tracking while taking shots of birds, it certainly looks like the camera is in AF-C mode. Am I misunderstanding something?
@BarryMountford
@BarryMountford 2 года назад
Yes it’s AFC but in full area AF where the camera decides what to focus on, you can have this set to face and eye detect for both human and animals.

Thanks for the vid Barry but sorry don't agree, getting the birds on the ground is one thing but try it in flight !! think you will find it disappointing, I had my z6ii for exactly a year and updated the firmware to the most recent put out by Nikon but found it useless, even to the point of photographing Colin the Cuckoo who comes and perches so close I lost so many opportunities it's hard to believe , In fact I'm so disappointed I've sold my Nikon gear after using Nikon for 10years and moving onto another brand, anyway keep up the good vids kind regards ....

Thanks sorry to hear that, I made a video about a year back photographing birds in flight using subject tracking and achieved great results, hope you have better success with a new camera.

From the last camera I had purchased a lot has happened... a.k.a... improved(?). However, what stunted my purchasing several (now many) years ago was the trend to smaller camera bodies. Argh... I am six feet four inched tall and have a grip to match that abnormality (haha). Yes, I have heard others talk about the grips, the 'feels' in the hand, but they ended up being but petite to me. So, I ask, as I always tend to, what size are you and is the camera fit for your hands. Look, I had, in the past, purchased a camera without asking that question, and it was not so pretty for me. Your grip seems to be rather bigger than many I see in photography videos, so your perspective would be maybe beneficial to me... and others.
@BarryMountford

I am 5-8 and I would say I have average sized hands and the camera feels very comfortable in hand.

It is better but nothing to write home about. These birds are moving so slowly that most autofocus system copes well. I am using a Z9 and even that, it’s autofocus still lags behind Canon and Sony in terms of bird af.
@kevinprideaux6653
@kevinprideaux6653 2 года назад
Still not good enough - sorry, I have Z6 and great lenses, bought OM-1 and it tracks the birds eye within the larger tracking box, rarely a shot missed. I WILL buy a Nikon when an affordable Z catches up and it will happen someday.
@BarryMountford
@BarryMountford 2 года назад
I’ve Not tried the OM1 so I can’t compare, I did see a big difference in performance between the Z6 and Z6ii in terms of AF maybe that will be improved with a future update? I do like the Olympus system The OMD-10 was a great holiday camera so much fun to use so I can imagine the OM-1 being as much fun.
