Psychologist and neuroscientist Dr. Nim Tottenham highlights evidence showing how early social experiences may influence development through learning and modification of developmental pathways. These age-related changes will be discussed in terms of potential developmental sensitive periods for environmental influence.
Compared to other species, human brain development is very slow, thus maximizing its chances of being influenced by environmental factors. In fact, it is this prolonged development that optimizes human brain development for learning from its environment. Variations in early experiences and environments reveal the profound effects of these influences on emotional development and associated neurobiology.
Nim Tottenham, PhD is a Professor of Psychology at Columbia University and Director of the Developmental Affective Neuroscience Laboratory. Her research examines brain development underlying emotional behavior in humans, and has highlighted fundamental changes in brain circuitry across development and the powerful role that early experiences, such as caregiving and stress, have on the construction of these circuits. She has authored over 100 journal articles and book chapters and is a frequent lecturer both nationally and internationally on human brain and emotional development. A Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, her scientific contributions have been recognized by the National Institute of Mental Health Biobehavioral Research Awards for Innovative New Scientists (BRAINS) Award, the American Psychological Association’s Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology, most recently by the National Academy of Sciences Troland Research Award.

I am a dog trainer and have used Jaak Panksepp, Dan Seigel and others work to help dogs. We created Affective Dog Behavior. Using Affective and Social Neuroscience. But this video here? Ties everything together!!! I feel validated in my work. Thank You!!!

This highlights why teaching emotional intelligence and providing tools for emotional processing to children is SO important. FasterEFT puts these skills into children's, parents, caregivers and teachers hands. It's Lifechanging! Everyone can look it up and can learn it for yourself... kids can learn it too.

Scientific human research like this often only reiterates what we already know by common sense. We all know that people tend to resort to the familiar, especially during stressful times. This is why the young adults preferred pop songs from their childhood over new ones in the experiment. It's also why in a party you look for people you know and go join them. Also why most people will usually choose to congregate with people of their own race, culture, country and language, because the familiar makes them more comfortable. It's all about familiarity, which by the way has its root from the word 'family.'

What dose Dr Nim Tottenham means by brain "maturity"? Is it linked to the numbers of neuronal connections? Or the non-mouvements of connections? I don't really know...

Question: is it only the physical presence of the parent that is needed? What if they're physically present, but emotionally absent?!

A teenage daughter and an MRI... Now THAT's the solution, why didn't I think about that before! :-) That was fasinating, thank you so much. There are quite a few studies using the MRI to help understand what sometimes makes the adult life a diffidult and painful experience and the hidden underlying childhood trauma that's causing it, these studies are vital and the results are often spectacular but using rodents and music to study the role learned stimuli early in life can play on our emotional maturity and how to use those early stimuli to help reduce adult stress and anxierty... AH WOW, that really caught my attention, I would love to do that too,. No wonder she sounds so passionate, I would too. I think I'm starting to realize the limitless possibilities of the MRI in anaslyzing and understanding the complex functions of the human brain and what we can do to reduce the anxiety levels of my ANNOYING TEENAGE DAUGHTER! He he.

does this mean children learn better when they learn on their own as opposed to hand-held by parents?

@rollout the battle rapper i believe it But hyperactivity also ups the chances for addiction Breakfast program you send an apple they give out free apple sauce They started trying to get no extra sugar added But most things they hand out for free has sugar, wheat or milk and my kids have sensitivity to that stuff but my kids preferred the yummy stuff the teacher wanted them to eat with all their friends Makes sense it was the time they started removing pop machines out of school
