Fun fact for you all... did you know Nina Simone was walking around in Europe in like the 80s with THAT THING on her to address a record exec who owed her money? She talks about it in an interview you can find online.

Four girls, aged between 8 & 10 were killed in an attack on a Sunday School in Birmingham Alabama in 1963. Nina Simone's first reaction was she wanted to buy a gun and shoot someone, but she was dissuaded and wrote this song instead. It followed on the assasination of Medgar Evans, A civil rights leader some months before. (if you're into Dylan, he has a song about that). This is Nina Simone in a , quite justifiably, angry mood. If your tastes are more Sinatra, You can listen to I loves you Porgy or My B

You know what? I had a super long comment on here, the day you did this reaction, and I saw it post, and went back later in the day to look at it, and it was gone. I detailed the history of the song, the genre, discussed similar groups/singers, my musical tastes, and bam, it's gone. Maybe RU-vid likes to censor history? I'm hoping it comes back, because that was too much to type again. Thanks for the reaction guys. It's an awesome song. I'll give it a few days, and maybe I'll recomment if the mood strikes.

This song is 100% social commentary on the times of Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement in the US....

Nina was real, bold, outspoken and used her platform to bring attention to the demonic treatment of black people. I love her, rest in heavenly peace Nina!

Nina Simone was a class act - ‘I Wish I Knew How It Feels To Be Free’ is my favourite by her. I’d say genre wise she’s on the Jazzy side.

If they refuse to teach our history in school no one will know about it.

Yes, I was shocked to see them not even aware that there was a huge incident. Our schools have swept it all under the rug 😢

You actually asked what was up in mississippi? "Everybody knows about it"...I guess, except white people and younger people. Look up Emmett Till. It was a horrible tragedy that some got away with. Also...the musical style is theatrical/vaudeville used a lot in political music. Check out Tom Lehrer and Mark Russell.

As for what genre: Nina was classically trained pianist at Julliard. To make money during school, she played clubs and cabarets so she developed her classical style into a more jazzy club version. SO you really end up with a Simone-genre. This extremely socio-political song is presented musically in a more light hearted show tune style and she would often perform this song as if it was part of a musical. Contrast and irony. Nina's music is an awesome rabbit hole I have been exploring and discovering new songs for 30 years now.

Sorry, but you guys are clueless about this song. Its’s a TOTAL protest in music saying what the Civil Rights movement didn’t seem to be working and the frustration and anguish was getting to her (and countless others)… Just look at her contained anger at the end when she jumps up and pushes the piano bench away!

There was a church bombing in a black church in Mississippi. I think that us what they are referencing. Governor Wallace was a major advocate for segregation between blacks and whites in schools. I don't know the specific reference to Tennessee but they were not great either.

I think this song of Nina was a response about the bombardment of a church

20 Black churches burned in Mississippi in 1964, multiple civil rights workers killed, more attacked.

It's jazz my man, and this is a live/improvised version of the song. In fact I don't think I've ever heard just one version of this song from her
