I'm sure everyone knows this, but in some versions of Maniac Mansion you could stick a hamster in a microwave & blow it up, then give it to the owner. This was removed in later versions.
The censorship back then was so inconsistent lol. Sex, blood, smoking and swastikas in the Golgo 13 games, blood in a Ninja Gaiden 2 cutscene, Valis 4 Lena does say "die", and the stupidest: they censor statues and blood in Castlevania 4, but Medusa is still naked XD
Kirby .K It didn't 'get past' censorship, Nintendo just didn't censor themselves very often. Kind of hypocritical that way really, but they've more or less stopped meddling with stuff like that. After all, Bayonetta 2 was a Wii U Exclusive, right? They've come a long way.
@@plumeless4462 Conker was one of the last games released to the N64, nintendo just didn't care about a M rated being released at that point, they were focusing on the gamecube. but its weird that the remake got censorship and the N64 didn't, lol.
It's kind of amazing what passed for english as far as Nintendo was concerned sometimes. Especially Metal Gear for NES. Im sure a dung beetle is going to be found in a temperate climate.
Ah, but you see how Mario jumps out of the pit before he "loses one of his chances at beating the level?" That's him actually bouncing back up from the mattress. But since he can't get out of the pit anymore he walks back to the start of the level to try again. "Lives" are actually the amount of times Mario is willing to go through the levels before getting bored and going home.
Is this another hint of Super mario Bros being staged? After the ending , all actors meet in the changing room, discussing their role, laughing their ass off and they do some karaoke or just go home.
For the #4 point, one example will be the old man who drank some alcohol and was drunk so he didn't let you pass from Viridian City in the First Generation of Pokémon, they changed it to the old man haven't had his coffee.
Nintendo of USA stopped the censorship rule in very late 1994 because of ESRB. During the 16-bit era. Any censorship they still do now is for the games they're publishing, or an action willingly taken by a third-party publisher to appeal more to their target audience due to Nintendo still having their brand image.
I always thought it was funny how in NES games that had dogs in them like Star Tropics or Dragon Quest II, the dogs always had buttholes. Even in North American versions.
I think the reason why the quote 'You Spoony Bard' was kept in the FF IV remake for DS was Square-Enix's choice because that line is one of the best known lines of Final Fantasy IV. Every Final Fantasy veteran would get the reference and laugh at that funny line. So while they did improve the dialouge of the remake, they keep the remember-able ones. I wish Kefka would've still said 'Son-of-a-submarine' in the Final Fantasy VI Advance. Thats funny XD
Mortal Kombat on Genesis outselling the SNES version was definite need of change for Nintendo. Nowadays Nintendo can accept any third-party game as long as it falls under the rating systems. Although Nintendo still continues to make changes to their games, they don't do changes to third-party games. Ironically, Sony is now starting to censor games (especially Japanese games) every since they moved to California in 2016. You can definitely see the differences when it comes to most anime games on PS4 and Switch

Mortal Combat was much better on Sega. This is the sole reason why I owned a Sega, rather than a SNES. Although blood was not seen in the Sega version of Mortal Combat, one could apply the blood code, ABACABB, during the title scene, and then the blood appear. This remains the single "cheat" code I learned for gaming.
"God" "Hell" "Die" "Damn" None of those are swear words. If you can't handle those then you can't handle anything, so get a grip people and stop banning them!
It made a little more sense back then before games were rated... but with the ESRB rating games now it shouldn't be an issue. If a game is rated M 17+ and a kid plays it.. and the parents find out about the stuff in it, it's their own damn fault.
God and Hell are not necessarily swear words. If used in a certain way makes it a curse word. For example, "What the hell?!" Is an example of swearing by using the word. No matter what you say, damn is always a swear word, look it up. Die isn't a swear word at all. But yeah, 3 out of 4 are swear words.
Actually, the 'Bowsers' in the castles before world 8 are actually goombas, koopas, etc. in disguise. You would find this out by killing Bowser via fireballs
I respect Nintendo for their censorship. I can play a Nintendo game and feel comfortable that I'm not going to get a bloodbath of gore and a torrent of swearing.
Nintendo clearly forgot about rule #2 when they designed the Dry Bones enemy - a reanimated skeleton of a Koopa/Nokonoko. And then there's Lavender Town from the first gen Pokemon games. Not to mention every cemetery in every video game is technically an implication of death.
I was so used to nintendo's family friendly games, so I fucking freaked out when I saw Bowsrs's son's skeleton burning in lava in "New SMB". That was more disturbing than any modern "adult" horror game.
i can say for black ops wii, it was graphical limitations, the blood splatter would completely destroy the framerate (although there were still the torture scenes)
Don't forget that Contra was renamed Probotector for the PAL region, and all the characters became robots due to Germany's heavy censorship law of the early 90's.
in gen one of pokemon There is a popular theory that claims that in the original Japanese Red/Green games, the Raticate that your Rival used in battles before Lavender Town died, due to your Rival's lines, the fact you meet him outside of the Pokémon cemetery and the fact that his Raticate doesn't make any other appearances over the course of game. conkers bad fur day didnt listen to rule 4 obviously. during manic mansions initial development for home computers, Lucasfilm Games censored profanity in the game; for instance, the company forced the developers to change Dave Miller's opening line of "Don't be a shit head" to "Don't be a tuna head". you can also make a hamster explode by placing it in a microwave. dont forget about "tapper" being changed to "rootbeer tapper"
For #4, Luigi and Wario said "Oh my God" after losing in Mario Party, which was changed. and in Mario Kart, originally, Bowser and Peach celebrated by drinking champagne!
7:48 Alcoholic drinks are changed to juice. Now that must've been a pretty amazing juice. Lol. Back when I was young, it was so obvious to me that it was booze.
I was watching tv and the Nintendo World Championships 2015 was on. I laughed after figuring out what was on the stage being blurred out. It was the Nintendo World Championship TM symbol. NINTENDO was not, and the fade in/out for the show even showed the NWC symbol but as for being seen on stage it was not. I looked up the video and it is not blurred so I wish now I recorded the stupid censorship just so I could have posted it. I'm really not sure why the network covered it if they were going to say it like a 1000 times and even show it after coming back from commercial while leaving the NINTENDO logo untouched.
Had you not limited your video to the bit war era, I would have asked about Conker's Bad Fur Day. I mean, I didn't realize there were *that* many parents buying their 8-year-old Halo or Mortal Kombat, and then raising hell because they *didn't* inspect the game beforehand! :P Great video, excellent commentary! :)
Since some Wii games were covered, Resident Evil 4 for the Wii is pretty gorey for Nintendo standards. But yeah most Nintendo games back in the day were pretty kid friendly.
Great vid! This is one of the better "Nintendo's Censureship" videos I've seen. I didn't even know about the "Contra-Super C" one. I'd like to expand a little on the gambling mini-games in Pokémon. I'm not sure if this is exactly the case, but I've heard that they were removed because gambling in kid's games was too taboo for the European market--hence their removal in Platinum. Maybe Game Freak thought that, instead of removing a feature of a game for one region, they ought to just axe it out altogether? Can anyone confirm?

By the way, you forgot to mention that "in Europe and Oceania, the NES version of Contra was retitled Probotector, and the player characters, as well as some of the enemy soldiers, were replaced with robotic counterparts. This was done to circumvent the BPjM's censorship laws in Germany, which prohibits the sales of violent video games to minors."
Here in Europe Contra was Probotector: same game - different graphics (all characters were robots). And we didn't get PAL version of Earthbound game - maybe it was too weird for the European people.
we didnt get earthbound bc it failed in the west. so they didnt think of releasing in europe however, it was released on wii u console on all regions (:

I'm a fire/medical/police dispatcher and the siren you used at 1:06 is the exact sound I hear when a 911 call comes in. It made my heart jump and I had the sudden urge to answer a phone. Then I realized I'm laying in bed and not at work
If you have killed any of the Bowsers in SMB with Fireballs you would see that only the last Bowser is actually Bowser and the rest are enemies in disguise.
Not to mention, the DK Rap song from Donkey Kong 64 had the word "hell" in it and the game got an "E" rating. The song was changed to "heck" in both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl but both those games got a "T" rating.
More recently but not too recently, Ocarina of time had to change the Gerudo Symbol because it resembled the Turkish Flag/ the flag of other Arab countries. And don't forget that creepy Fire Temple music with the Muslim chant.
Mortal Kombat 1 on Nintendo was banned in England for not having enough blood in it, It wasn't untill Mortal Kombat 2 arrived with a satisfactory amount of blood that the ban was lifted.
