I never realized just how bad the Wii U commercials were until I saw them next to the switch commercials.

The best ad was with the guy shitting and playing Mario Kart 8.

The Wii U ads targeted kids way too heavily. The Switch ads target Xbox and Sony fanboys to SWITCH their opinion about gaming. I am not sorry.

There's something Sony understood in 1995 when first advertising the Playstation. Everyone wants to be in their late teens-early 20s. Young kids want to be older and do grown up things. Older people want to relive their youth. I think they initially targeted 17-21 year old as the age most people want to be, young and old.

I love the cheesy "SETTLE IT IN SMASH" adverts. Especially the Little Mac one. Cracks me up everytime.

I only saw a Wii U ad on TV like twice in it's entire life span. The Switch on the other hand, i can't even go into a waiting room without seeing a switch ad at one point

The name change also helps to when it comes to advertising. By removing the Wii name it further helped them solidify the fact that it was a brand new games system not related to the previous one.

Dunkey described the Wii U/Switch transition as "The end of the old guys' reign and the beginning of the new guys'". It really does feel like Nintendo has had a fresh new entity breathe new life into the Switch and the company as a whole. If the Wii/Wii U was your lame, kind of strict Grandma, the Switch is like your cool Aunt. She won't let you do everything (Friend Requests instead of friend codes, party chat, etc.), but she is still pretty fun.

I agree with the whole child thing. If you compare Japan's Splatoon commercials and America's, you can clearly see how much American commercials seemed to "child"ify Nintendo.

At this point, anyone who says crap like "Nintendo is a kids company!" Just stop. It's just not true anymore and everyone knows it. They dun goofed on the Wii U but now the Switch is out. There are games like Doom and Wolfinstine(I probably spelled that wrong) on the thing and other games that are clearly for the more mature audiences. And I think Nintendo never was a USA company in the first place. They were just trying to be family friendly.

Spot on. I'm glad Nintendo is aiming this at the 20 to 30-somethings who have disposable income and remember when Nintendo was on top of the industry. The Switch is undeniably cool; the younger set will follow the cool. I'm 33. I haven't been into gaming since Nintendo 64. I haven't put my Switch down since it launched.

Switch does have amazing advertising. I've see many Switch ads on Disney channel for MK8, ARMS, and even Splatoon (which I saw recently). They even had a Breath of the Wild commercial on MTV not long after the system marched!

I wish marketers/producers would get this simple rule into their thick skulls, don't market products or hire kid movie actors with little whiny/obnoxious kids. It didn't work for kid actors in movies, and it doesn't work for this either. It's pretty much a death wish for your movie/product. If it's one thing that kids role model better from it's heroic, strong, awesome looking characters or cool young adults. Hardly anyone is gonna be aspired to watch or buy products with young snot nosed twats. You want to grab a general demographic to buy your product, little kids don't grab very many especially the annoying ones. With ads like these it's no wonder the Wii U failed so badly (even though it's like 20% or so the problem the Wii U suffered from). Thankfully so far Switch is getting cooler vibes with no fucking kids and Nintendo's getting pretty wild with Switch title adverts and they're doing a tremendous job. Hopefully this trend continues and hopefully adverts will stop using fucking kids in their marketing, cause very rarely does it work.

When I got a switch I got a girlfriend instantly.

I can really understand this and relate to it. One time in my secondary school, people were talking about how shit the Nintendo consoles were (including the switch) because the last time any of them so advertisements for a Nintendo console was the Wii u which gave a stigma that it is for annoying little kids. A few weeks later after some phone detox (because of a bunch of people weres sexting and watching porn in school) someone brought in his Nintendo Switch and everyone shifted their attention to it, doing some smash ultimate tourney with 30+ players. Everyone was having a great time (not sure if part of the reason was that they were bored) but you get the point. Wii U did a bad job at showing why people enjoy the console, misrepresenting it as a kids-only game.

Riiiight, the ad for the first Smash Bros is quite brutal when you watch back at it 😂 It’s like “lalala” *punch, kick, kick kick, punch* Then my Nintendo Switch is so damn worth buying. I bought the Smash edition (because I’ve loved SB since waaay back) + it’s less confusing if other people come over with their switch. I bought it around 1 week ago & I’ve already played 30 hours on it (though I’ve had cousins, family, friends and other playing on it so it not just me). No matter what anyone says about the WiiU, it will always by an amazing concept of a console in my own personal opinion.

Every time I watch or listen to the younger version of me, I *always* cringe! I'm not quite sure why that is, but it makes me cringe, *hard.* That's basically what watching these Wii U commercials with the kids in them is like. Except you aren't even one of them, so the intensity in which the "effect" you feel is lowered a bit.

The Wii U had a lot of Great games at it's release, but the ads were really bad, whereas theNintendo Switch had almost no must-plays at it's release, but it had the good advertisement.

You can't lie the Wii u did have good games Splatoon, we have a sequel, Splatoon 2, we have mk8 deluxe, and we should already have Mario maker. So Nintendo is taking a minigun with it's ammo as Wii u games and firing it at the switch, that's how it see it.

I think the Wii U is fine. I've been playing with the Wii U for the last 5 years and I'm just now getting a switch. I never knew that it wasn't that great and the only reason I got it was bc my Wii broke and stopped reading disks but I think they're both super cool.

Pro tip in advertising: be realistic Actors make the fact they are actors apparent. The kids and adults aren't realistic. Try to make the adults seem like adults and the kids trying to convince parents the way kids do. Not by pointing at stuff on the TV.
