PART 2: • Nirvana live at Krist'... !!!! Filmed by Robert Novoselic Special Thanks: Ryan Aigner, Senad Begovic, Ben Lattin, Steve Newman, & Robert Novoselic
if i recall correctly this was in Krist's mom's beauty shop where they could practice/play loud without neighbors etc cuz the other businesses were closed at night so yeah...
HITCHTXGIRL not exactly but close. Krists mom owned a beauty shop and there was a space upstairs that they used for practice. If not for that who knows what would've happened.
These right here are the best times in any musician's life. Practicing in a shitty basement or garage and playing for your friends. Lots of beer and no pressure. This is exactly where music lives. I think it would be safe to say this was some of their fondest memories.
I was lucky enough to have a lot of days like that at my friends house. we would hook high school and load up with Haffenreffers and jam all day. the 80's were something else. I was 21 by the time Nirvana recorded this..
@@fairytells8503 Depends on where you live. But go to your local music/guitar stores and ask around. And then after that go to popular local venues and you will find plenty more.
2024 checking in here, this has always been and continues to be true. Music has only gotten continuously better, you just need to look harder for the good stuff.
I used to think so too. Then I had kids and realized these are just knuckleheaded kids saying silly teenager stuff. Difference is that one of them is a great musician. Still silly teens.
Holy crap dude I just realized that wasn't Dave grohl on drums I thought it sounded a little off.... Yeah I applaud the guy too but thank God they got Dave grohl.... Kurt got all the accolades but let's not get it twisted Dave grohl is one talented son of a b****
Novoselic is one of my all time favorite bassists! His basslines are one of the essential elements of Nirvana’s powerful sound. Cobain, a powerful creative force himself, was really lucky to have Krist in the rhythm section.
Did Krist come up with those parts or did Kurt? I was always under the impression that Kurt came up with all the music for the wongs. I could be wrong though. They initially split profits 3 ways, but later on Kurt said he wants more as he's the sole songwriter.
@@rexx9496 from what i heard kurt was the driving craeative force but it sounded like they jamed out his song ideas until the song was complete, so im pretty sure Krist just followed the melody it wasnt that hard, I dont think Kurt had any pre written parts for anybody especially given how they made songs. But I did also hear he had specific drum parts he wanted, maybe he did the same thing with some bass parts like the mini bass solo in poly. But from what i heard Krist's opinion on music was well respected so i can see that just being something that came out naturally in jam sesssions. And regarldess how the moeny grubbing layers decided to split the profits, doesnt take away from the face that Krist was a pretty good musician and had a good ear for music, no doubt encouraging Kurt, maybe even like a producer role in the band, not exactly the creative force but helping it along. I get most of this info from this guys' channel by the way ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fe3IreB-n8I.html&ab_channel=DanielSarkissian
Their version of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" was great! I'm 53, two years Kurt's junior & thought I'd heard everything they did. It's 2022 and I'm hearing NEW to me Nirvana music...THANK YOU! I just subscribed!
Just imagine how lucky those guys were. Nirvana was performing a live concert in Krist's Mother's house, and they were watching them live in the same room. Two years later and Nirvana was the biggest band in the world. Damn.. I wish I was there.

@@mitzi856 Love Buzz was originally recorded by a band called Shocking Blue in the 1960's: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JAvYUFcRnO4.html
Chad helped me carry my drums into the studio when my band recorded with Jack Endino in spring of 2007. I will always remember that. Thanks to Jack and Chad, both! 2 great dudes!
He once said this is when he was the happiest with the band. They rehearsed, played for a few people and drove around in their van. Then it all became huge. Big shows, awards, interviews, tours. Something that started out as fun became a job and i guess it sucked the life out of him. We love your music. Rip.
that's why you never turn your passion into your work. at one point in my life I started to despise musicians and def the music industry. took a long time away to finally come around and enjoy making music again. now it's for the love and not to pay the bills. some people love the lifestyle more than the music. Kurt loved music. it was an outlet for him emotionally. once it became a job he lost that. that's why Courtney was toxic. she loved the lifestyle and the attention. she's everything I hate about "musicians".
Thank you to whoever recorded this. This is unbelievably epic. This was how it all started, the ground floor when Nirvana had just or was just about to record their first studio demo's in '88. Bleach came out June 15, 1989 and was recorded for $616.17.
RU-vid is the closest thing we have to a time machine. Its weird seeing them so young and oblivious to the fact that in the future their band would have a huge impact and change the music scene. Thanks for the upload.
@@JRoss80 not quite! He didn’t have the skills to play lead. He only knew how to play barre chords and attempted solos on a single string! He couldn’t solo any scales, he couldn’t tap any solos, he couldn’t even alternate pick across multiple strings and couldn’t even sweep pick. He didn’t know a single bit of music theory, modes or sequences. His guitar skills were far and few, but he was able to still make great music with what little he was able to do on a guitar! And it sounded good!!!
I went to the EMP (Experience music project) in Seattle yesterday and they had the bass that Krist is playing here, along with a lot of old nirvana instruments and memorabilia. It was awesome.
@@Rondawwg That band actually did ok. It was a progressive metal band. We made two albums and did some touring. And then I went on to be a hired gun type touring drummer.
Such an incredibly inaccurate statement…Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s riding a skateboard…I’ve never known a time in my life that music “like this” didn’t exist…
I saw them down in Bayfront Park (Miami, FL) in ‘93. They were and still are my favorite band, and they came down here just weeks before my birthday, so of course I was stoked as a pig in shit! I also later saw a shitty band (Saliva, or Slither, or one of those bands…) cover them as part of a 60-band concert, and it wasn’t anywhere near the same experience. They even started complaining because someone discarded a plastic water bottle in their general direction. They threatened to leave, so we all booed them off the stage. Good times. LOL!
The greatest band of all time started in a living room Hell Yea!!!!!! Let's us know if your mom would like to book our band in her living room!!!! Worldwide mom's living room tour!!!!! :)
I know that this has been posted over a decade ago but it just showed up in my feed. Wow, this is pure gold. Thank you so much to the channel creator for posting this! 🤟❤❗❗❗
A friend told me listen to this band theyre gonna be huge and i listened and was amazed they're songs so simple and honest. It really changed the way I looked at guitar, the chord changes so different from what I had known. kurt wasn't afraid to be dissonant or melodioc or both on the one song. He's one musician that I really miss.
This is Such an AWESOME cut in time!!!! They sound Damn Good! I"M so sorry for KURT!!! I love you Kurt, youre the reason my fingers keep hurting.....R.I.P.
Gotta admire the integrity of these guys. At a time when hair metal was king they stayed true to a punk meets Zep meets the Beatles format. True innovators!
@@ZYGTropicals Yeah, they had a song called Aero Zeppelin for no reason and covered a few of their songs by accident, as well as Kurt saying he grew up listening to the Beatles and their songs were the first ones he played along to. Totally crazy.
Dont believe everything you hear in life. Montage of heck wasn't 100% factual according to many who were there. These people at "this gig" were family and friends.
This is a rehearsal. If you're trying to make it as a band this is an every day thing. You treat it like a job where you have to work fifty plus hours a week at least not including a regular job.
It's crazy to watch this thinking that Kurt had no idea that eventually he'd be worshipped like Jesus by millions, have record breaking albums with crazy sales, but super depressed and be dead in 1994. For his sake, I wish it could have stayed like this in the video but thanks Kurt for changing music and giving people stuff to listen to. Love you Kurt, rest in peace.
This is one of the classiest, most sincere posts I think I've ever seen on youtube. I hope life is kind to you wherever you are, Ashley. Don't ever let anyone dull your sparkle, OK?
Ashley Hills if you had told Kurdt he'd be dead in six years because of the fame he would have laughed and said it figured....he was an artist...not a rockstar
I can't believe this came out of Aberdeen, WA. Whenever I take a drive through this town for the beach I can't help but look at the streets and mom&pop's and imagine this group wandering about.
That cover of Immigrant Song rules, but Goddamn that version of Big Long Now is incredible. So perfect. Love the incubator vibe of this whole video. Thanks for sharing!
Dear God thank you I've been trying to figure out what song that was and had to come here and see your comment to figure it out. And yeah it's incredible. Kurt roars like a lion.
я тут перевел на ваша язык, я помню как я записывать на пленку этот материал, а nirvana не хотела оставить пленку из за того что оригинал запись идёт 2 hours, это меньшая часть публикация видео
@@bullock4211 Pat Smear didn't play a single note on any recording. I can understand (but not agree with) people's arguments for inducting Chad but why in the world would Pat Smear be inducted?
This reminds me of my childhood,(I'm still basically a kid, I'm a teenager, but whatever) because I would always be in the basement whenever my dad had bandpractice, and I'm still there whenever his friends come over and they play. I just love the feel of the sound waves and the perfection of the little imperfections. Cold soda, electric guitar like this, I just love it.
who that hell dares to vote down on this video. wtf... this is just too good.. it's a piece of a beautiful and tragic history, still awesome and relevant now and for years to come. thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this video I really appreciate it. It was awesome hearing some of their earlier songs with another drummer and hearing Kurt’s voice so raw and young
An incredible document. Just a bunch of guys thrashing around in the basement making music like thousands of others have done. But history would soon take a turn. Thank you Kurt Krist and Chad. And Dave too of course.
I can't believe how good this sounds on a camcorder. Kurt singing against the wall like that...fucking amazing....and damn, I just got to their cover of Immigrant Song...wow., Kurt's scream. This is great.
the greatest thing is that 4 years later they would be the biggest band in the world. and they sounded exactly same. they only thing that changed was that he faced 50K people, not the wall in his friend's mom's house
The amazing thing about Chad, at least in the interviews I have seen, He is not in the slightest bit bitter and has nothing but good things to say, especially about Kurt
I used to be a big Nirvana fan..well,still I am..and today, this is the greatest find about this band...and this is like watching The Hobbit after watching all the Lord of The Rings.... Rest in peace Kurt ! *now...what is this heat around my eyes?...
WOW-! Nirvana..RAW....I enjoy this as seeing/hearing them before the crush of stardom changed their lives...Chad Channing is hella- impressive on drums,Krist is being a goof, and Kurt is focused !!
This is the cutest damn thing I've ever seen, its like the fabulous stains except with guys- love the Blue Cheer album in the corner. Kick ass Zeppelin cover, DEWD! Aaah, back when strobe lights were cool...such super powered times. Thanks for the memories :)~
+Dina Prevele It's so odd to think, "...littel did these boys know how they would change rock music forever." They never saw the rolling train that was heading their way. It hurts to think what music would be like today if Kurt were still alive. Part of me thinks they would have eventually called it quits and Kurt would've been another Axel and another part of me thinks they would've just imploded. Who know's?
This is the best video I've seen of nirvana in my life thank you for the upload, everyone that's been on a band has done this and it is the best feeling when you jam with your band, but watching Fucking Nirvana to do it, it's priceless.
That's amazing. Kurt said he couldn't play guitar "well." But it sure looked like he could at the start of Love Buzz. And they sound like a force of nature. I always liked Big Long Now, got me through some tough times. But they didn't seem to play it that often. Now this video is Rock + Roll history.
the most amazing thing about this to me is the song about a girl made it from krists moms house to freakin mtv unplugged i mean could you imagine that?
I saw them in Montreal in a small bar hole in the wall place before they were big. They sounded terrible and we thought we'd never see them again. I spoke to Kurt after I asked him his name and he was actually a mellow guy. I had no idea they were going to get big but you never know!
Ok guys he faces the wall for the sound effect. Not bc he couldnt handle fame. He wasnt famous yet when this video was made. He was among friends here and was not facing the walk due to being uncomfortable and not wanting to look at anyone as everyone keeps saying. . Why does everyone analysis Kurt as being someone who hated his music and band. Fame and the industry combined with druga changed everything. He loved music and art, he hated the industry's way of changing everything they worked for, and didnt want to be what anyone wanted him to be just himself. and was sick of hurting and needing heroine just to function. That's what he said not my opinion.
If you do ur research you will see thats why the lyrics are on the wall he could have had the lyrics in front if thats all. Its for the sound, not my wor . Ill post the interview i read to find this out myself.
What a couple mom I loved Nirvana still today Kurt was a big loss for the music industry but Dave Grohl started the Foo Fighter’s and Pat Smear is still with Dave is a great drummer all around great musician a band that will play in a concert and play for over 2 hours most bands don’t play that long it’s really terrible that Dave lost Kurt and now his best friend Taylor which was also an all around great musician if you haven’t seen the tribute you should try to see it it will go down in music history and very heart warming in my opinion Shane Hawkins was one of the awesome tribute to his father 😢I cried the whole time truly beautiful
12:45 pure kurt . . . legend. Everyone goes on about how he should still be here and all ... he should, BUT he was here and gave us all what he did, thanks to him, a real inspiration and musically gifted genius
This is AMAZEBALLS+ af ! Another lifelong fan just seeing this for first time...F'ing GOLD! Kurt would sing toward a wall so he could monitor his own voice, naturally. Just another example of how brilliant this man was. Thank You for the boss footage...
Can you even imagine? been there, just like sitting there and didn't think "omg this band will be like woow in a couple of years"... I wish I could have been there just watching this... Just awesome... good times.
This is history right here. I’m not even really a nirvana fan but I know they changed music as we know it and will go down in history as one of the the greatest bands ever. That’s why this video is so important
So glad I stumbled upon this video, was a huge fan of nirvana for being saw raw and grunge, just what I wanted to hear at the time in my life, now 58 and can't get enough Cobain RIP, imagi e the thing he would've accomplished
Shit, I am so lame. This makes me feel like crying. I miss the Puget Sound back in those days so much./ My husband's band played at some hotel lounge in Aberdeen... it was called something about a shipwreck I think. We had to ride from Tacoma in the back of the guitar player's truck for them to play there. We went to a few house parties in Aberdeen because there was nothiiiiinnnng to do there if you were not over 21, except bug people to drive to Westport with you and sign n buy codeine cough syrup. ;) and go to lame parties. At least in Tacoma we had Community World Theater!
this is great. a real gem. a look at the early stages of one of the great bands in rock history. Kurt is singing at the wall to cut down on the echo. RIP Kurt cobain !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol you think the sound is coming from the microphone? That microphone is connected to speakers I am assuming and him singing up against the wall would not have that effect because he is singing theough a p.a.
I NEVER saw this before I want to say I thank you to all those who brought it to me.. because it's just like being in the room with them and I love it..!!
I never sit though music vids but this was more than that....the music emotionally wrenching and performed expertly but the ART of this film blows my mind, for is historic relevance and overall vibe. Thank you!
This just shows you that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. These guys playing in a small room with 3 people watching and just a few years later they were all over MTV and sold millions of records. Had sold out shows, Crazy times.
you had three uber talented musicians, one of which was a genius on the level of Beethoven. Hard work and dedication are important but without talent, it doesn’t matter how hard you work
@@Xrad-jv3gi talent is a construct nobody is born a genius. you work to get there. the only cap on your greatness is your inspirations and the effort you put in.
@@mrclean9501 you’re espousing the horatio Alger myth … is hard work enough if you’re 5’8” and want to play in the nba? What if you want to be a physicist but always struggled with math?
