Really am I the first? I wouldn't have thought so... this thing was a little trouble to figure out but I got it straight. Now a couple months later it's acting up again but I can hear the relays opening and closing when I turn the key and step on the clutch which it wasn't doing before. This time I think it's the starter or the solenoid. I have to trace the wires again and see what I can find to verify before I start buying parts. 😁👍😁👍😁👍
Thank you so much for this video. I just bought my 350z three weeks ago and when it didn’t start, I had no clue what it could be. I initially checked the battery and fuse box located under the dashboard. Fortunately, I saw your helpful video and did exactly as you instructed. The car started right up! Thank you for helping me save money, time, and headaches! God Bless You!
Thank u soo very much. Ur video saved me a lot of money and headache. I was at the end of my search and was about to have my G37 towed. Stumbled on ur video and watched it all the way checking issues like u said. Then I noticed that the rubber piece was missing on my clutch pedal. Now I’m back on the road. Thank God for u and the info. Simple fix.
Thank you for sharing your video on issues with 350z! This is an incredible and unselfish video! It is very useful to me and to all guys who own 350z. I own 2005 350z with 80k mileage. It's good to learn from you. You are an excellent teacher far better than those repair guys in the shop. Keep it up the good work!!!
Thanks Newton! I'm not a rich man (yet) so when something of mine breaks I gotta fix it! I like to video my experience and share it, often it is very helpful to others! That's some very low mileage on your Z, mine is the same year, but 160k and still runs like it was new. Thank you so much for your comment!
Another learning video. Going through all the possibilities of what could and could not be the culprit of it not starting. What a teacher you are!! KILLER SHIRT!!!!
Little weird to ask for an automatic error code on a thread about a clutch rubber pad. Have you searched for the error online? What did it say? Unfortunately this video is not about that error code it's not one that I've encountered before.
Hi Travis, so glad I could help. Watch out for the pad on the throttle, also. I had another video about that where the car suddenly became undrivable and threw error codes while I was in traffic.
The bad solder connection probably caused the fuse and relay undue voltage. But let's face it. The average person would never figure that out. $2000.00 at the dealer.
Not to mention everything else that was wrong! LoL! I can't believe that I had that many different problems at the same time! Should be good for another 14 years..... lol... probably not, but YAY! Thanks man!
Thanks for this video. I had been having this starting problem and an issue with the brake lights staying on. I replaced that rubber bumper on the brake pedal and it fixed the brake light issue and I replaced the start relay and it fixed the issue with the starter not cranking. I never knew there was a fuse and relay box next to the battery. In my car, I did not have to remove the battery to get at the relay. So far so good. It now cranks fine and starts. The clutch pedal bumper thing was fine in my car but I have one of them in my tool box just in case it too fails.
Hahaha yep, I am that guy! My channel is loaded with stuff that people said couldn't or shouldn't have been done lol! Thanks for the recognition, and thank you for your comment!
My 2005 350Z wouldn't start in the grocery parking lot. Luckily, there was an auto shop in the plaza a short distance away where I bought a new battery. The guy was nice enuf to install for me and then -- nothing. It clicked once and all the dash lights were on, but no start. Thank heavens for your video!! I'm going to get to work on locating the relay switch right now! They're not expensive so even if it doesn't work, no big deal.
Wow, glad I could help! I am building a power module like this for my 1956 VW Beetle now, how this thing worked intrigued me a bit... but I figure I can do better!
They are indeed very similar, I don't think anybody else has ever taken one of these things apart on here except me. Good luck to youl Let me know how it goes!
Your video helped save my bros 2005 350z, we changed the alternator, battery was new, and nothing. I pulled the fuses from the ipdm and they were all green with corrosion. Changed all the fuses and Relays. Still didnt work. I found a parts number matching ipdm on eBay for $75 with warranty. Car started right up!!! Once again Thanks for the Vid!
@@DuckmanCycles Bad Camshaft or Crank shaft position sensor will also cause a not start/long start.I learned not to use/buy the cheap duralast sensors. I went thru 3 of them in 1 day. I ended up switching both camshaft sensors and the crank shaft sensors to Hitachi Brand and all is well now.
@@willski81r I'm not having those problems... the starter motor was getting weak and cranking very slow. I thought my battery was going but it was just the starter motor, once that was changed out, it cranked over faster than I ever remembered. It had been gradually slowing over the years... lol, never seen one do that. Cam sensors are fine. I put a cheap one in 5 years ago when I had no money, its still there and its still working fine. The original sensor would just crap out when it felt like it, then for a few weeks it would be fine again, then dead for a few weeks. What a nuisance.
Gotta say MFDM that sometimes dogged determination rules the day! There are far too many ghosts to chase in the late model vehicles, but with perseverance (bullheadedness) The Z is running again! Well done!
Hahaha! Duckheadedness... but seriously, I can fix about anything. Its just a car, its meant to be repaired... just keep isolating the problems... and in this case it was MANY! Thanks!
Thanks man! There were a lot of things I covered in this video, and they even came up on this car again in recent weeks! All fixed yet again! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
It’s rare, no it never happens, that the first video that I research ever helps me out. This one did. Found that little rotten plastic bastard laying right on the floor mat. Giving a HUGE THANKS to you bro. 👍
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! This video is incredibly helpful thank you - wish I had your knowledge to DYI it myself, but sadly going to a shop - thank you for your dedication sir
Great trouble-shooting and save, good lesson and example on not giving up, but at the end of the day many would have done just that --you have a cool skill set.
Dude your penny trick just saved my ass! You're a life saver. And now when I see someone else with this problem, I can say "hey, I can fix your car for a penny 😂"
So I’m a little less than a year and a half late but this video was really helpful. I have an 04 Infiniti g35 and my IPDM looks almost exactly the same. I don’t know if you’ve already figure it out but the reason it had some moisture in it is because the way that Nissan engineers designed the car is that there’s very little drainage in the Battery seat so it tends to clog. This causes water to fill up and it makes the board and wires get wet
Thank you, I will have to look in there. The IPDM is also sitting in a place where there's a lot of water flow off the windshield. It's just a lousy design location
Very useful video,. thanks! I had the identical issue with a slightly different cause that may help others. Exact same symptoms as this video... good battery.... lights/washers/horn/windows/dash lights etc all working, but car starter will not engage. I stripped down the iPDM as in this video but did not find anything wrong except for some very light corrosion on some of the relay pins. Cleaned them up, reassembled the module and re-installed. The car started!!! For 2 days... then it would not start again. I ordered a tested used unit on Ebay, swapped it into my 350z and it worked! For 2 more days! Then, no starting again. Eventually got a good scan tool and it showed a U1000 Canbus fault code and a fault with the ABS module. Took it to the dealer and they found the real root cause was a bad connection on the ground wire from the PCM computer under the dash. They fixed it with no new parts needed. Zero issues since this repair. Hope that helps others trying to trace a non starting 350z if it is not the iPDM module!
Hey thank you so much for the feedback! I'm glad it helped, even if only briefly for 2 days! I'll have to keep an eye on my ground wires also. Thanks for sharing your story, it may help me or somebody else in the future!
If you now something about A/C i got problem on my A/C my compressor never stop working never have brake I don’t know why or is normal everything work perfect very cool but never stop,Appreciate if you know something about it. Thx
My 2004 350z is struggling to crank over and start at times. Good solid new battery in it. Swapped relay with headlight and both work fine so not looking like a relay. Next I’m going to fully clean the MAF and Throttle body but I doubt that’s causes my start issue. I’m leaning toward needing new spark plugs, a new fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump if it persists to be an issue..
If it's struggling to crank, then it's most likely a starter or battery.... or some electrical connection between them. I replaced my starter recently, it was cranking quite slowly and had been getting slower and slower over the years. All of those other things you described don't affect the "cranking over" of the engine. If its not firing, however, then those things may come into play. Hope that helps, and good luck to you!
Dude you’re super entertaining. I’m basically diagnosing the same (but for an auto) I should check to see if I get power to that pin 25 for the starter because it could be the same issue! (Or a relay). I appreciate you making this video and I’ll link it in my next vlog update!
Well thanks to your video ive found the non start on my 350z , i didnt even know that fusebox was under there ..... found the fuse box to have a lot of corrosion in the relay and connectors...... awaiting 2nd hand part to get it up and running again
Awesome vid, nice to see you posted it. Makes folks like myself stop taking the easy way out buying things we don’t really need to replace. Sweet merch too! Look forward to wearing my Skeeter and Eleanor threads to the local shows to see who else watches! 👍
i order the relays using your link on amazon, they were too big to fit. but i did test the original relays and they are working. I think the starter is the issue.
Someone else told me they're too big also, but when I ordered them they're fine. I'd like to see a pic of what you received. I think the vendor probably screwing something up. But in your case if the relays are good, and you did check them for continuity then yes it could be in the starter. Also check your clutch switch!
@@DuckmanCycles Tesla's are the only current car that cannot have piston return springs retrofitted. I found out why though. Tesla's use electron return springs!
Those little rubber buttons cause all kinds of strange things on this car! I recently uploaded another video where it happened to the gas pedal, too.... which rendered the car undrivable!
That cold solder on the IPDM was a FACTORY DEFECT! Shit like this pisses me off to no end! I've reflowed many of them. SoldaPullit (sp) and fresh solder and good to go. BTW I was given one of those little battery powered solder thingys years ago and it doesn't heat anything else but the spot you put it on... And that "No User Serviceable Parts Inside". Well for 99.999% of users maybe. I have the Service Manuals for all my cars (some are a stack of phone books a foot thick). I don't know if my dealership hates or loves me but if there's something I can't fix myself I take the books marked to the relevant pages and tell the Service Guy I did *this* and *this* so that leaves *this* damn part under the dash I can't get to without taking the WHOLE DAMN DASH apart! A/C on my '05 Grand Prix GT2 failed a few weeks ago and it took them TWO WEEKS to fix it! Everything from the front seats and dash came out to the firewall! Parts hard to get etc. Rented a 2019 Dodge Challenger for a few days (fun car BTW) and because they were taking so long to get MY car fixed they told me to bring the Challenger back and they'd give me a "Courtesy Car" to drive until mine was ready. Freebie? Hell yeah! Buick Encore loaded. Drove it a couple days before I looked under the hood (I do that) and it's a EcoTech FOUR cylinder! Repair on the GT2 was over $2000.00! BTW the GT2 has everything but the Supercharger. My '99 GTP HAS the Supercharger. Good for 40 extra horsepower! Those Buick 3.8L V6s are great engines! Think the old turbo Grand Nationals. Timing chain pushrod bullet proof and parts are cheap and easy to find!
I love the energy, My nissan 350Z 2004 suddenly stopped turning on,and if it does the lights get on their own,The car doesnt take fuel and i believe its ana electric issue...where do i start
Please! You can reach me through any form of social media in my video description, on my website, or email me through my website! I'll see what I can do to help.
You know, this is the second time I'm getting into this video, first time was because I needed to know where the IPDM was and how to access it, this clip solved that at that time. Now I'm back because I'm having issues with the starter. Will start checking the relay :)
@@DuckmanCycles I’m having the same issue with my Z but mine is an automatic with a slap shift. I replaced my battery and the terminals. Sometimes it starts and will for days sometimes is doesn’t and won’t start for a minute or sometimes days. I tried the relay thing but it didn’t work for me. I switched around a few too. I don’t have a clutch so I know it’s not related to that. I hear a click and everything lights up inside but then nothing. What would you suggest with an auto?? I’m in the process of taking out the IPDM now to take a look but if that doesn’t work I’m stumped.
Good call! That would make it easy to just open the hood and gank one! Thanks for sharing! Iill be doing a follow up on this video shortly... I will mention it!
Cold solder joints can cause a lot of problems, GM had trouble with them on wiper boards a few years ago. I had a problem with one on my house AC control board, a few minutes with asoldering iron cured the problem.
That's why it has been raining here for a week, it took a half circle around Pensacola.... we've only got in the rain on again off again, but almost no wind at all.
@@DuckmanCycles Sounds like you got lucky then. Glad you were able to get Ol Blue fixed though. That would've driven me up a goddamned wall haha. I'm actually surprised with my car having 212k miles on it, she's been fairly trouble free. Knock on wood it stays that way.
Are those other relays on the right side of the IPDM box also removable and replaceable? If so, where can those relays be purchased? I take it the dealership doesn't sell just the relays?
People say they are not, some people say they are. I've read it both ways on paper.... but links to new relays are in the video description here! Hope that helps!

I was looking at your merchandise and have a suggestion. I don't drink coffee but would buy a MFDM rum and cola glass. Good job troubleshooting that electrical problem.
Duckman sized is perfect,I like to make a big drink too, plastic so it is garage safe when I make one too many and drop it on the floor. LOL ask me how I know.
Sadly no, not until I need to take it apart again someday when it quits again... lol! But there is lots more to learn retroactively about electronics in general before one would understand what I was doing in there anyway. That'd be years of videos before we could even get to the IPDM video! Thanks for the question!
And you have to consider, you really have to this time (!), that this Zee, this nice 350 ... is from the good "old" times. Where the stuff was still kinda-sorta fixable by handy DIYer. The current generation of Zee? Forget it. Keep on duckin' #MFDM
Nice repair Duckman!!, Conjunction junction what's your function good song to sing while working I think it was Bill Murray sang it not sure it was the 70's it must have been pay day at the plating facility or hangover Monday anyhue just simple fix with surprises Now it's Purring great thank's for the adventure!!!; )P.S. I would have lost it if a pine cone flew at you the needles did make my day!!!
Wow if a Pinecone could fly that far we would have some serious winds from that Hurricane Barry that's forming off the coast right now.... that's what had it raining all week here. And I believe Conjunction Junction was Jack Sheldon by the way, I don't know if Bill Murray has that kind of pipes on him, now I have to see Bill Murray does any singing at all, heh.
Proper electrical troubleshooting, I suppose it comes with experience. I've done that kind of thing for years since I was a kid, electrical does not intimidate... probably one of my stronger abilities. But yes, some people would have really panicked over this. Thank you very much for the comment!
Awesome find. I was wondering if you had issues with water or rodents and their "stuff" causing poor drainage just below that module you operated on. I drilled holes in my battery tray and poked a clothes hanger around to loosen up the blockage. There's two holes. One is oval and has a grommet in it and it is on the "shelf" just below the module. The other is inboard of the left battery tray bolt (maybe) or in my case the threads rusted away and the bolt hole is the drain. This area is a haven for rust under the battery tray. No one has made a video yet. Thanks
No rodents nor birds.... lots of spiders though when the car sits for an extended period of time. Under a battery is typical rust spot for any vehicle, the acid and other chemicals eat the paint, the moisture does the rest! I often toss some baking soda under a battery, that helps slow down the issue! Hope that helps!
Right above the battery and fuse box is also where they have a connection "coupler" for the windshield wiper fluid tube. My wife had someone from Autozone install her battery and they broke this coupler which causes leaking of windshield wiper fluid ALL over the battery and relays so I'm having to swap everything out. Be careful taking out the battery ! Really poorly designed
My 350z automatic is doing the same thing yours did. I'm going to replace fuse 89 and see what happens. After this the car will be up for sale it's a 2004 with only 73k miles
2004 here. Just replaced battery. Was packed up for weekend excursion. Fueled up at gas station. Real slow crank over. Then it screamed a few times and not just clicks. Wont turn over at all. Thats why i got a new battery lol. Starter gave up ghost.
Got burnt at Team Nissan in Manchester NH, back in the early 90's. Tech messed with probes till he shorted the ECU, I Got a used one from a junk yard he installed it. Found out it needed a coil which was the problem before he mister good wrenched it. With rentals and work this $30.00 repair cost $ 1500.00. Needless to say I never owned another Nissan. I think most dealer suck which is why they make working on your cars and trucks so hard.
I think this is my last Nissan also, unless I wind up getting one much older someday. Now that they are owned by the French Renault company I don't think I want anything to do with them. The Nissan Juke that I drive for work for example, what a piece of junk!
I didn’t know about the box backthere! I have a similar issue on my 07 g35 but the check engine isn’t on, scanner won’t read, and it won’t crank. Think it’s the ecu or something in the IDPU?
Clips not yet replaced, the hood actually compresses the rubber seal on the plastic panels, so you really don't need 'em! I should just go buy a bag of them though, some of what remains are broken, too.
Bro I am not lying: Got this car a few days ago and swapped the battery because it was old and garbage. Swapped it and wondered why the car wouldn't start. I panicked a bit that it was the immobilizer. Saw your video and heard that you talked about the clutch and this button. I thought "no way..". Got in the car, pushed the clutch and the engine started 😂 NO ONE TOLD ME THAT I HAVE TO PUSH THE CLUTCH IN THIS OLD BEAUTY TO START THE CAR🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
