Here's my view as a Frontier owner... EVERYONE ALWAYS complains about how expensive trucks are, that they've lost their utilitarianism, that they're cowboy cadillacs, etc.. The Nissan IS affordable (especially on the used market), can be fully cleaned inside with a towel and spray cleaner, has competitive towing and payload, gets decent mpg with the 9 speed, and IS STILL EASY TO WORK ON / FIX. My 2020 has the 9 speed and new engine but old body style. No start stop, no modes, no crap you dont need. Its been rock solid and simple to maintain. Nissan kept what was GOOD about a TRUCK. People want these things then fawn over all this 4 cylinder turbocharged crap that will all break in the future. This is a half ton platform midsize truck with a beefy rear end, 1/2 ton trans, and big boi frame channels. This thing is meant to do the job at an affordable price and all I see are people complaining. This is the truck most people ask for yet people bitch its not fancy. In the words of Vice Grip Garage, HELP ME UNDERSTAND.

You pretty much summed up the average truck buyer, a bunch of idiots that don't need a truck and don't use their truck for truck things. Instead, they want big screens and heated steering wheels which makes actual truck users have to pay 40 GRAND for a mid size.

Exactly! Like you, I have the old body with the new engine/transmission (2021 4X4 SV crew cab). I have a 2 1/2" lift with upgraded suspension and 32" tires. For me, it's the perfect blend of on road/off road ability. I love the way it looks and I really love how simple it is and devoid of many expensive (and costly) features. It's not the latest and greatest, but I don't need (or wish to pay for) the newest thing. Don't get me wrong, I really like many of the new vehicles with all the fancy features. However, for many people (myself included), I enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that I don't have tons of potential little "features" to fail and have to fix. As with most things in life, everything is a trade off, and for me, my little Frontier makes a lot of sense. And one more thing...YES, tires are super important as has already been pointed out!

You guys might be making a good point. But, the slipping wheel braking/traction control(faux locker/limited slip) seemed non existent. And, after all, those are the AT tires that came on the truck. Tires that are better in mud would have helped a lot, but once a front tire starts spinning uselessly or is in the air, tires become irrelevant. You will get no help out of that axle unless you brake the spinning tire or lock the axle(or at least limit the slip). But, I will admit this: if they had some true mud tires on this truck, it might have cleared the tread and gripped enough to push them far enough for the lifted rt or lt tire to come back down to earth and find some grip. But what brand new truck comes with real mud tires? And that broken shock is not inspiring either. It would have been interesting to have a Chevy Trail Boss along on the same day, as well as a few other competitors.

Manufacturers have to play to the majority of buyers who will use this as a daily driver and need the balance of on road performance and some off road capabilities. Additionally, they have to meet safety requirements and a more road biased tire helps them meet performance parameters for safety requirements. If you want the best off road performance, you have to expect to buy new tires.

"If you really wanted to test the ABLS you have to put it in 4lo unlocked.". So, ABLS won't work on the front axle if the rear is locked? Why would they do that? Wouldn't 4 wheel ABLS be hugely useful in both 4 Hi and 4 lo, whether the rear is locked or not? Even if 4 Lo is required, don't most newer truck apply some sort of braking to a spinning rt or lt front wheel if the rear is locked? And don't some do so in 4HI?
@glow4417

You need ABLS to work with the locker. The front should be braking to help assist the rear. Nissan's just suck off-road. Not saying this truck is not a decent value, but every video off-road shows how this truck is seriously lacking -- especially considering it has a rear locker.

I viewed a number of their past videos that tested other midsized trucks under difficult but not exactly the same conditions and while they were more capable they also cost 10k more. It would be interesting to see the pro4x compared to the colorado trailboss, tacoma offroad, ranger xlt, canyon at4 under the same conditions on the same day. That would be interesting.

What I like about the Frontier is its honest in what it is. There are no Turbo's, nothing crazy fancy under the hood, or suspension, its just old school proven. The part I don't get is the price. I understand these trucks have newer safety tech and all, but in 2019 I bought a new Pro 4X fully loaded for $31,400(US) plus tax and fees. A new Pro 4X similarly equipped costs almost $50k. I do not see $19k worth of stuff on the new truck. Other than that? I prefer the Frontier over the others in the class for its simplicity.

When I just happened to look at a new Frontier PRO 4X while at the dealer getting an oil filter my our Frontier I noticed some neat features on the new truck, but then I looked and saw all it didn't have for the price point. No Sunroof, No Leather, no heated seats, even the Utili Track system wasn't as good, our truck has rails on the bed floor the new truck doesn't. Yes the new truck has more "gadgets" and tech, but most of that is useless off road and doesn't really make it a "Better" truck overall. But this particular PRO 4X was $46k. One with Leather and a Sunroof was $50k. I told the sales guy that is freaking ridiculous I would never pay that for a Truck. Heck in 2015 our then New Titan 4x4 was bought for under $40k its just crazy how much things have gone up and people seem ok with it for some reason, just saying its "Inflation". "No amount of traction control will help with a "no traction" situation. I think you actually can pin it all on the (terrible) tires as I think the Frontier would be a different truck in those conditions with better tires.".............. I agree, but applying a brake to a uselessly spinning wheel and sending power to a wheel that MIGHT have better traction might make the difference in slowly moving forward vs stuck. And in this day and age, I really want any truck I have to be able to either lock and axle or greatly limit a spinning tire. All for the same reason that I want lockers or at least limited slip difs. Some good mud tires probably would have pushed this Nissan thru, but what new truck comes with true mudders?

I feel like this video was designed to cause failure like let me be so gentle that cause wheel slip and failed attempt, the whole steering was because there is no steer by wire, the old school feel is the reason why people love it, it’s not disconnected from the trail the way drive by wire is, the engine is the most reliable of any modern midsize, no interference engine, constant under boost low displacement motor, it is the old school of this truck that makes it so appealing

Yeah it's good for uneducated folks that are too lazy to learn. But I would never pay 40k+ for old tech and engineering. Could've just bought last generation and save 10-15k if people truly just want a truck for truck use. This truck is a fail compared to its competitors, hence low sales and always low resale value. Better tires made a huge difference on our '11 Frontier V6 6MT. Ground clearance and turning radius are certainly weak points on ours, but being able to completely disengage the primitive stability and traction controls on the truck is great. Everything still works on it as we approach 200K miles with mostly basic maintenance. Even with regularly towing ~2000 lbs., the clutch still lasted to about 160,000, and the engine still sounds good and pulls well. The 4x4 time it sees is mostly snow wheeling, and some muddy trails - it does okay on both -- tires, as you said. For the new one, it seems like they didn't go far enough in design to make a substantial improvement over what they were already producing overall. No excuse for that shock giving up, either, especially since what we saw of your test was low-speed.

I drive a second gen frontier and do lots of off-roading and overlanding. Nissan has always struggled with ground clearance and turning radius. I wish they would release a higher clearance model like Chevy did with ZR2. Cut out bumpers and a front locker would go along way. Stock tires suck too but everybody changes tires anyway. I lifted mine 2.5” with 33’s which works great with the wheelbase. 4wd system works great without all the Nannies that other vehicles have. About the same break over angle as a buddies JT on 35’s. Mine has gone everywhere my friends similarly built tacomas and gladiators have been.

It would also be nice if the next edition was boatsided below the belt line. Tacoma does this and it gives the appearance of more clearance even if the numbers are the same.

The only way that you can say how bad the frontier is would be to have your favorite mid trucks with the same tires going through the same road. Oh ya, you can't blame nissan for a bad shock. But you should blame toyota for the new tocoma loosing it's front wheel drive. See tfl.

When I had my 2018 Pro4X (Dude I love/Hate my Ride) I did a lot of trails with the Bancroft Overland Club and had no problems in "summertime mud" and never had any traction issues. (Our local trails don't open until May 1st) BUT - I did frequently have that problem of not being able to get out of 4-low. When you're leading a trail ride and you come to pavement and you can't get out of 4-low, that can be a problem for everyone behind you. I would have to remember to get on the radio in advance and say "stay 2 truck lengths away from my bumper 'cause I'm probably going to have to back up". In 2018 that truck was thousands less than the Tacoma and the Ranger wasn't even available yet so I put up with the idiosyncrasies.

Man TFL Truck just showed a video of the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma that just broke while going off road to say Toyota is any better would be a misconception. I don’t know about their nismo shock absorbers as I would prefer just the proven bilstein myself. The truck itself is excellent value for the price and now seeing the video from TFL Trucks RU-vid channel I’m inconclusive about the comment of the Tacoma in this video. The video sounds bias or preferential to say the least. I would change out those tires though and keep the bilstein that come with the truck.

My 2023 frontier pro-4x is my third Nissan I keep getting them because they are the most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned and meet my performance needs I used to have a 2010 Titan and I still have my 05 350z been with Nissan 3 years now between the 3 vehicles I’ve only ever replace one belt because it squeaked on my 350z other than that never had to repair anything just maintenance and I beat the shit out of them all be it I take good care of it after beating em but anyone who talks about Nissan and say it’s a pos has never owned one or never owned one that wasn’t molested before them or they got like a fwd Nissan I’ll happily keep buying Nissan

Most people on the internet just parrot what they’ve read in the comments about Nissan without ever owning one. They don’t do research. Pretty much across all the consumer surveys (JD Power, etc.) and reliability data (RepairPal, etc.) Nissan is avg or slightly above avg depending on model. But they can be purchased for cheaper than pretty much anything else. So you get average or better reliability for less than everything cost. They’re a great deal! Especially in the used market.

I’m almost speechless here …. I’m a happy Toyota Tacoma owner but also know the strong capability of the Nissan Frontier. Both trucks have their strong and weak points, but both have very good 4x4 systems and are very capable. You guys couldn’t have done a worse job on reviewing this truck! Completely botched it! Very clearly driver error was a factor here. Sure, better tires would have made a difference but you guys never gave it a chance. You guys have a really good channel here but I would have been ashamed to put this video out … so poorly executed and amateurish. Enough said.

The shock breaking is inexcusable, but having seen other reviews and not seeing that happen, it wouldn't disturb me too much as a potential buyer. I don't have alot of experience with Bilstein but I'd expect them to not be turning out many lemons. The tires really were outmatched in these conditions, though, and I hope something more aggressive is at least an option. Generally though, I think the Frontier could still be one of the better values in the segment, they really do need to be more transparent about the Nismo suspension though, I find the fact they wouldn't tell you more about it concerning.

Bashing homers for toyota. Drv my rig and you'll see how capable this beast really is. My set-up is simple. Nismo is for racing, not going slow and set-up to fail type vid. Pick your rig of choice, and lets go. I have no nismo, but my setup isn't for racing baja. I like all midsize trucks but this Frontier pro-4x kills the competition when it comes to availability and 4 low capability.

If I needed a new truck to replace my 2004 Ford Ranger, this is on my shortlist. This truck is "old school", but who cares. That just means it is well built and easy to work on. I like that it has a traditional V6. The modern 9 speed auto is a nice touch. I don't think the cameras are all that important, plus I wouldn't use the truck in extreme off road situations anyway. What is a bummer is that Nissan doesn't advertise this truck. I suspect most of the car buyers out there may not even know the Frontier is an option. It is priced below the other trucks in the segment, and yet is probably the most reliable and simple. The only other truck I might consider is the Honda Ridgeline, quite frankly.

You complained about how horrible the traction control is and that is hilarious to me. I laugh because it's ironic that the GT-R probably has one of the best on the planet. Different beasts, I know.. but still funny to me. Is there third party computer management that can make the locker available in 4WD-high or even in 2WD? Also, horrible tires and it doesn't matter how good your traction control is.

I think unless you are testing each vehicle with the same tires and in the same trail conditions results will be sporadic at best. The traction control on this truck does seem to be showing a lack of worth in several tests I have seen. The broken shock is a bit concerning but could it have been damaged in previous hands or just a bad one? Will be interesting to see how these trucks hold up over time.

I’m thinking this comes down to a tires situation. I have a 23 pro 4x and put BFG KO2’s on it and it was night and day compared to the stock at’s. There’s sections of local trail that I needed 4wd in with the at’s, but I’m able to do the same section in 2wd because the KO2’s are just that much better. I’m also able to air down lower with the KO2’s

I have to agree with the other comments here...taking a truck with sub par tires into the mud and ruts then acting disappointed when it gets stuck is a no go. We all know with better rubber the Frontier would have walked right through it. You can argue Nissan should provide better tires on a P4X but the reality is they have to meet government regulations on fleet gas mileage so they have to sell street biased tires even on their 4x4s. Personally I'd go for the NA V6 in the Frontier over any of the competitors turbo motors every time. I go into the woods often while hunting and fishing and have never been even close to stuck...but I also tend to drive around deeper mud holes and ditches instead of trying to go through them. The styling both inside and out is excellent on the Frontier as well. My only complaint is the poor quality back up camera...IMO it's really the only thing that Nissan swung and missed on.

Come on Truck King. Those tires are better suited to a golf cart. You knew that before you started. Then driving it into deeper ruts filled with mud and not even airing down a little, anyway vehicle would have gotten stuck. Tires are very important. Whom ever kitted out the vehicle went for looks and minimum capability. The Pro4X is just a step up from the regular frontier, the Dana 44 axle and a rear locker and basic first stage Bilstein shocks. Nissan let themselves down with all that very expensive and not very capable equipment.

Those were some pretty nasty conditions, put a decent set of tires on that truck and compare it to other trucks on the same day you might find it’s more about conditions.

OK, I was disappointed with that shock. But as I have thought about it: that shock is Bilstein(sp?), and they make shocks for numerous makes and models of 4wd trucks. I can't really blame that failure on Nissan, unless I'm unwilling to buy any new truck with that brand shock. Not likely. Same for the tires. Maybe they suck as mud tires but are great on snow, ice or sand? My 84 (yep, solid axle!) 4Runner actually came with Bridgestone Duellers, and I did great in deep snow and most off road conditions in AZ and UT. Though I never tried it in this type of mud. However, I remain disappointed in the apparent lack of any braking of a uselessly spinning wheel. In this day and age, I really want that ability. Unless I can lock the front like some Jeeps or a ZR2, it seems like that ability would frequently come in handy. I wonder how much that adds to a trucks cost to utilize the ABS for stopping the wheel on one side from stealing all of the power from the wheel with more grip?
