On Labor Day Weekend of 2015, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society operated several trips from the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pa, to the Delaware Water Gap near the PA/NJ border. On Saturday, I ventured out with some friends to document the historic trip, seeing that Steamtown hadn't had any steam powered excursions of its own since 2012. When we set up at Myrtle Street, we were treated to a show we didn't expect and wouldn't forget...It is still unknown how it got there, but there was buildup on the tracks just East of the Nay Aug Tunnel, causing the NKP 765 and its rather large passenger train to slip upon exiting the tunnel. The train had to reverse and make a second attempt to get it over the grade. Enjoy, and subscribe for more content like this!

Once she was outside of the town I reside in, a friend went to see her up close. I wanted to sit in the back yard to hear her echoing whistle one time. Goose bumps! I'm only a trolley Motorman, but this is pure power right here! On these kinds of grades, I could run flat out at about 15 mile an hour with no slippage. The trolley I run makes a grade look easy, but NKP 765 would put on a show. Our steepest grades are 1% and 2.5%.

At its height during the 1920's, Nay Aug saw about 60 train moves a day, half of them (of course!) upgrade and about ten of these were solid coal drags, which usually rated three helpers in addition to the road power. And beyond that, a junction with a branch to Winton, a few miles to the east, was protected by an interlocking plant (tower), which endured until about 1943, if my sources are correct. What a show that must have been!

I have to admire the skill of the crew and how they manage wheel slip. They don't have computer managed wheel slip control systems, like they have on diesels. There is something about 765 that makes it my favorite steam engine.

In 2011 his face of NKP 765 is black using his old whistle and the old bell and in 2015 his face is grey and he used a New Whistle and a New Bell

My guess is that FWRHS either wanted or needed to do some upgrading of 765's own auxiliary tender so that it could run on the mainline with her, and I think that work was initiated in 2016 after the operating season ended that year and was finished up in 2017.

The buildup was caused by an infamous rail fan named Leonard Shaner, who greased the rails on purpose.

I'm in Akron Ohio and I recently had a chance to ride my bicycle on the towpath trail in Cuyahoga national Forest.I look forward to the day when I can take my bicycle back on that trail at the first pickup point pay them $5 so I can ride all the way as far as she goes looking at the track ft it makes me think what she sounds like so I listen to these videos and I stand over there and I look and in my mind's eye I can see the black and white and grey smoke hear that beautiful whistle I hope he comes back from out of fort Wayne Indiana through my old hometown of fostoria Ohio fostoria Ohiofostoria Ohio rail fence better catcher cuz I'm going to catch her up here in Akron this year hopefully

운지천 steam engines in there day regularly topped 100 mph. The Milwaukee road Hiawatha the C&O express trains the daylight and many more just like nkp were usually clocked at upwards of 70 miles an hour

the british locomotive "Mallard" holds the speed record for steam. in 1938, it reached 126 miles per hour... or about 203 kilometers per hour. many American steam locomotives pulling passenger trains regularly hit 70 to 80 mph.

The world record for a steam engine belongs to a British locomotive - it was clocked at 126 MPH. Generally passenger engines have large driving wheels and freight engines have smaller drivers. Those big UP engines you see can really move. By the way the New York City subways are no slouches when it comes to speed.

This one usually is restricted to 75 mph, but it can definitely do triple digit speeds, possibly 111 mph or More.

It was a rain storm that brought down wet leaves, combined with grease from a passing freight train. There is a rail greaser on that track to help adhesion for heavy freight trains. It was also mentioned that a railfan named Leonard Shaner greased the rails.
