Steam engine 1.002 of the NMBS (Belgian state railways) heritage fleet in its active days
running from Herentals to Leopoldsburg. A service stop in Mol station is included.
These scenes were filmed in june 1999.

Wat een machtige machine, het is de enige Belgische museum stoomloc die ik helaas nooit zelf in levende lijve heb zien rijden. Het is ook interesant wanneer men ze bekijkt, hoeveel verschillende invloeden in deze machine samenkomen. Haar ketel stroomlijn is identiek aan deze van de Britse P2 locomotief Cock o' the North van de LNER, waar momenteel een nieuwe replica van in aanbouw is. Het onderstel doet dan weer Amerikaans aan, en de tender gelijkt op deze van het Nord type 37A zoals achter de 231A, 231C en 141P gebruikt werd. En ze laat zien inderdaad over ruim 3000pk te kunnen beschikken, de trein van 450 ton wordt met gemak getrokken.

Fijn dat je volop van de video kon genieten Tom. Helaas zal hij niet meer op de baan komen. Hij reed zacht en sierlijk. Fijn dat ik hem enkele keren thuis zag passeren.

Prachtige video van de type 1 ! Spijtig dat deze machine niet meer onder stoom gebracht mag /kan worden .

Wat een oenen bij de NMBS, alleen de 29013 die nog rijd, van een heel park stoomlocomotieven nog maar ééne die rijvaardig is. Zullen we de 29 mischien ook maar gelijk wegsteken, dan hebben we niks meer.

When did this last run? Its specifications are quite similar to the LMS Stanier Princess Royal and Princess Coronation classes.

I don't have a date. It is now in store at Mariembourg, CF3V. This mighty locomotive has two firebox doors, as does the Flamme pacific type 10 in the Trainworld museum in Schaarbeek, Brussels.

I believe 1999 is the last year she ran. I have talked with a few people who worked at the Mechelen Workshop at the time she was overhauled and they confirmed that it wasn't done properly. During her entire career as a preserved engine on the mail line she suffered from firebox problems and leaking. When her ticket finally expired, there was so much work to be done that the Belgian state railways didn't restore her. In Belgium, there als really isn't the demand to have such a heavy steam engine working on the mail line. The type 29 consolidation n°29.013 is better suited for such work and has been carrying the flag for Belgian main line steam ever since her overhaul in Meiningen in 2003. You're right in saying that the heavy LMS engines and the Belgian Type 1 have a lot in common. Both were built for pulling heavy express trains over demanding hilly routes. For the British engines the main line from London to Glasgow, for the Belgian route the line through the Ardennes linking Brussels with Luxembourg.

@@Jappymovies It's not only that she has a lot in common with the LMS Princess and Coronation classes, like her power, wheel arangement, use, tractive effort and her weight (Coronation loco 110t and type 1 loco 124t), but when you look closely to her streamline cladding you will see it is almost identical with that of the LNER 2-8-2 no 2001 Cock o' the North, which was outshopped around the same time as the type 1. Which design it was isn't clear for me, regarding to Wikipedia it was a design of Dr. Dalby of the LNER technical test center of the LNER.

​@@Tom-Lahayethe best and most powerful pacifics came from belgium and from france (chapelon). No doubt about that. The english ones never had to deliver heavy trains whereas the germans were never powerful enough on high speed.
